I sort of thought the Reds' trade deadline push was sort of lame. It kind of seemed like they were making trades for the sake of making trades, exemplified by the fact that they sent away one of their brightest young players, Felipe Lopez, in a package deal that brought them a bunch of so-so bullpen help and Royce Clayton, who is barely a Major League baseball player. It sort of seemed like if that was the best move they could make, then maybe they should have just stood pat and tried to make a run with what they had.

BoSox have announced that Wells is scratched from tonight's start, to be replaced by (gasp) Tavarez.....Still no word on any trade for Wells. Seems like San Diego for him but reports are that the Reds are really pushing for him. Wonder who the Reds would dangle for trade bait?

crappy Met starting pitching

If the Mets' starting pitching is so crappy, then they wouldn't currently possess the best record in baseball, would they?

The Yankees have like the 3rd best record. Does that mean they are the 3rd rotation?

No. but if your starting pitching sucks total root, you're not going to win more games than anyone else in your league. Hopefully, these guys will perform in the postseason. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. In '86, the Mets had pretty fucking solid starting pitching and it was an adventure.

And they wouldn't want him to get hurt. All indications are he's going back to San Diego.

Was Wells scratched to make him more attractive trade bait? I guess if he pitched today, it might lower his value a bit since he wouldn't be able to pitch again for another 4 or 5 days.

Wells has been traded. The team he's been traded to has not been announced. Padres, Dodgers, St.Louis are three strong possibilities. I'd imagine it'll be San DiAgo(a whale's vagina).

big papi called while we were out today to let us know he'll be back in the lineup on Saturday. he says extra big hello to sir stewart! yes!

and we ran into Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon in Pawtucket and they'll be back by Monday at the latest. They might bring A-God back with them. Schweeet!

One of my co-workers is trying to convince me that now that David Wells is gone, the Red Sox are going to win the World Series. He is certain that Wells was the cause of all of their problems. Right now he's working on a response to my query into how exactly David Wells gave David Ortiz a heart condition. He doesn't have the details worked out just yet, but he insists that Wells is responsible. I'd think he was joking except, well, I know this guy and he's definately not.

As well as the fact that Wells was actually pitching pretty decent his last few starts and one of the few bright spots (unfortunately) in the starting rotation.

Right on. It's like the Globe said this morning. Trading Wells is a clear indication the Sox have officially given up on 2006.

I hate to see Boomer go. I liked the guy and he was pitching pretty well, but if it goes down and we get that kid from SD-the catcher that will work great too. 'Tek is getting old and we will be needing a good catcher in the next couple of years. That said, I say don't bother bringing back Varitek from injury, let him play just a few games and get some at bats but let him rest the last month. There is no point to him playing now. He's getting old for a catcher and this time off now may pay dividends next year. I see no reason to rush him back in. The Sox are out of the race (as much as it pains me to admit).
