Smokestack Joe
I just returned from Portland OR. My friend moved out there to join his band. It is a pretty cool town, although it is the rain season so the weather sucked. I was looking forward to doing some outdoor activity but the clouds and fog and rain prevented it. The music scene is cool. I like that there are a lot of places for bands to perform. It has a great appreciation for the local music. 9 Muses Acoustic Tavern was one of my favorite places. I checked out Multnomah Falls, which was beautiful. I saw Mt. Hood only one day that i was there. Clouds were too low otherwise. I dont think i will be moving there but definitely coming back in the summer time.
ms. yvon
smokestack, i do love portland! i was there last week for the little bit o'snow that fell. the city has a terrific minor league baseball park. probably my favorite feature of p-town is that you can find a great beer, nay, tremendous beer on just about everycorner and you don't have to go into a bar to have one. it's a very social town. the rain can be a drag if you're not used to it, but it makes for perfect cafe/reading/conversation weather. when the place dries out a bit, everyone wants to go out and enjoy it. ah, i miss it already. did you get a chance to try the stumptown? derrick
i'm working on moving out there if i can find a job teaching. we may be headed out this spring to scout around. anodyne---do you teach grade school/middle school/high school? if so, here are a couple of links that should be helpful with respect to finding a teaching job in portland: 1. TSCP = all of your licensing needs.2. Portland Public HR Page once you complete the online application it's just a matter of clicking on open jobs you are interested in.3. Teach Oregon online application system through edZapp. Most of the other districts (besides portland) use this. again, once you complete the online application it's just a matter of clicking on jobs you are interested in. and if you have any questions about schools, districts, whatnot, let me know (just PM me for email if you want.) and yes, the beer here is fantastic. farva
I was just out in Portland this past weekend - I was lucky enough to get three beautiful clear days in a row, and spent a day skiing at Timberline on Mt. Hood, a day driving to Cannon Beach on the coast and then a day hiking in Forest Park right near the city. At night we tried a few restaurants and went to the Rouge Brewery bar that they have in the city. Overall I was really impressed - the city itself was really cool and I was impressed with the rather expansive light rail system, especially since you could take it to the airport. I was also "lucky" enough to fly out on Tuesday and witness the absolute clusterf*ck that was the Tuesday snowstorm - they only had 1 inch by 7am and canceled school and my friends got to call in to work! Pretty funny, although there were a lot of banged up cars by the end of the day.

Smokestack Joe
i was at cannon beach two weeks ago, it was foggy and misty, couldnt see much but the waves created all these canals on the beachfront. it was quite cool.
Serak_the_Preparer
We have a lot of love for Portland. The wife and i make a yearly trip out there and hit Cannon Beach each time we go. We had to stay in Seaside last time we went, not as nice, but cheaper lodging. Finally hit Tillamook too - great cheese factory (and I am originally from Wisconsin!). As far as Full Sail goes, isn't it brewed in Hood River? The brewery in Bend is the Deschuttes Brewery. Great beer and even better food (if you are ever in Bend). I believe Full Sail is brewed overlooking the Columbia River and Mt. Hood. Aw, the memories, such a beautiful place...when the sun is shining.
Smokestack Joe
yes when the sun is shining.also from wisconsin, the Tillamook cheese is great. but i have to get back to cannon beach in the summer time. and also imbibe in more Bend beers and Deschuttes beer. quite tasty. Serak_the_Preparer
If you are of our age and freaks like my wife and I you could take the Goonies tour on the way to Canon Beach. Just go into Astoria and visit the Goonies house - Data's house is right next to it. Then you can check out the courthouse the Fertelli's break out of and Mike's dad's museum. It is all pretty cool if you loved the Goonies like we did. There is a website that shows you where everyting is - we absolutely loved it!! Goonies never die!
