As Jeff himself noted, tonight's show was a completely opposite experience from the previous night in New Orleans. Not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but I will say I probably had more fun at the New Orleans show.

 

Despite the loudness at the House of Blues, there was just much more of a feeling of sharing something with a bunch of people as opposed to tonight when it was a big, darkened theater and I just felt very removed from Jeff and even most of the people around me. I don't know if that makes any sense--probably not--but that's kind of the way I felt. Certainly tonight's crowd was much more quiet and respectful (except for a few chatty dudes) than N.O., but maybe too much so...

Just got home... the show was really unique and great.

 

The guy next to me was the guy who 'politely' requested Gun... and then Jeff later thanked me for requesting Theologians durng the encore.

 

The banter was such a memorable part of the show... it was obvious that Jeff was having fun interacting with the fans. Jeff relived an old Uncle Tupelo show from Zydeco here in Bham back in '94... but forgot to talk about the show at 5 Points Music Hall in '97 (I think) when he fell off the stage.

 

He dropped his guitar prior to Acuff Rose... someone from Belleville High School class of '92 was in the crowd... great interaction all night from a very respectful crowd. No talk of shit tonight... yeah!

 

Highlights: Spiders, Airline, Gun, Mtn Bed, Jar, Not For The Season, of course SES and Acuff Rose... JESUS ETC was beautiful and perfect!!!!

 

Really wanted to hear... The Thanks I Get, Sky Blue Sky, Someday Some Morning, Sometime, and Pecan Pie

 

Two very memorable shows from Tweedy & Wilco at the Alabama Theatre over the last 2 years. Cannot wait for the 'Sky Blue Sky' tour to come back!

For anyone who cares (Stoffel, this means you), Scott McCaughey did another solid opening set in Birmingham. As in New Orleans, he played mostly keyboards and was accompanied by drummer Joe Adragna (of the band The Junior League). Although tonight was just their second time performing together, to their credit, Scott and Joe changed up the set a fair bit. Tonight, one of the nuggets we got was The Old Plantation off the Down With Wilco record.

 

And the Hank Williams cover was also a nice surprise. I can't remember if Scott mentioned Joe telling him that Hank Williams died in Birmingham (which turns out not to be true) or if Joe said that he just spent one of his last nights in Birmingham, not far from the Alabama Theatre (which is true). Either way, it was a neat rendition of the song.

 

At any rate, the "Minus 2" set went this way:

i agree it was another great show. i know what you mean about feeling removed from jeff. i think that it's just a bigger room than the other venues. It had a much different feel than the other show i saw. highlights for me were spiders, muzzle of bees, new madrid, bd49thb, gun and someone else's song. the crowd was ok, but i think you guys are forgetting the annoying b!tch that walked up to the stage after mountain bed to ask jeff to dedicate it to her husband, and then proceeded to make an ass out of herself as she walked back to her seat. she was almost directly under me. the thought of pouring my beer on her crossed my mind. thanks to the guy who requested gun...and thanks for another good show jeff.

that is a sweet set indeed, first i know he plays cemetery row live, he might have debuted it earlier on this short solo tour, but would have loved to hear it, hope at least one of these opening sets was recorded.

also good to hear he is playing the piano again, been awhile. too bad he doesn't do more solo sets in europe

I taped the show last night in Birmingham and it came out great EXCEPT FOR THE ASSHAT that took 4000 pictures with his gawd-damn BEEPING digital camera. Essentually ruined the tapes from both tapers.

Besides the "that guy" dealings with.... I thought is was a great show.

great show...Jeff was in a great mood. The crowd was mostly respectful. I was second row right behind the old dude in the front row who had the repour with Jeff. I scrreamed out sunken Treasure and he Played it!!!...that was so cool...he alomost didn't but then went into it and it was a special moment for me. Everything was played perfectly with minor interuptions here and there. It was a most unique experience. The Jesus Ect. was played so perfectly and clean with the crowd singing along very lightly...it was a very cool moment. There where so many funny things thats he said and moments. the dude is so quick and witty.

When he dropped his J45 for acuff I felt so terrible. I know how it feels to drop one of your babies. But he recover well....tuned it up and sent us happily on into the magic city rain.

i was dead front center, in seat 107, my buddy was in 108. if the guitar had fallen any further, it would have landed in my lap. the guy sitting behind me with the beeping camera was really irritating. him and his friend had to comment about everything that was yelled, or directed at the stage. i was impressed that the crowd was as respectful as they were, while he played at least. they were pretty bad between songs though. honestly, i could have done without the sing along. the two guys in the second row only knew every other word, but they were still singing along anyway. i also thought it was a little rude to yell requests. if he asked, then sure, yell em out, otherwise, keep your mouth shut. overall a good show. the typical assholes in the crowd were annoying, but otherwise good stuff. the best seats ive ever had for any sit down show. is there any chance some the beeping camera noise could be edited out, or is that just too much work? the sad thing is, every camera has the option to turn that sound off, all it does is waste your batteries anyway. my two cents...

I feel like a complete ass. I am so sorry about the beeping camera. I didn't realize it till after the show when the taper pointed it out to me. I am so sorry. I had a few too many drinks and was too chatty with the banter also. Too many drinks is no excuse for my behavior. I sincerly apologize for ruining the taping of the show. If someone would have asked me to turn of the beeping sound (which I guess I didn't really pay attetion too before) I would have turned it off or stop taking pictures.

The reason I took so many pictures was so few were coming out any good without the flash. Only about 10 of them were worth a shit. I did shoot all the pictures holding the camera down by my stomach after the girl behind me asked me too.

What a great show... certainly worth the 4 hour drive from Mobile. Jesus Etc. sounded particularly good as well as Gun and Sunken Treasure. How did everyone like Jeff's harmonica playing? I thought it sounded fine and really contributed to the song.

 

I don't think anyone has mentioned Jeff's reference to the fan that stormed the stage that he punched out. Right after the crazy woman ran down and asked Jeff to "dedicate" Remember The Mountain Bed to her husband, Jeff said he thought he heard a fan "charging" and put up his fists, only receiving few laughs. Did most people get the joke? Anyways it was a great show.. I look foward to seeing him again soon.

First time poster... long time lurker...

 

The Alabama Theatre show had the most respectful audience I have ever been apart of. It was almost eerie. The draw back was that since majority of the audience was so attentive, it made the few who weren't really stand out. Probably the first show I've ever been to where you could actually hear the subtle beeps of a digital camera from four or five rows away. If You watched the Acuff video you could tell that you could hear a pin drop in the place during the the rests, which is surreal considering there were 2500 people there. Jeff referred to the audience as "the abyss" in reference to the sunken treasure DVD. However, he had great audience interaction. Kinda made you feel like you were sitting in a living room with a few people listening to him play.

 

Some highlights of Jeff's Banter at the AL Theatre (paraphrased slightly):

 

"It's like I'm singing to my therapist naked"

 

To the lady who insisted Jeff dedicate Mountain Bed (which he had already played) to her husband:

"You know, a better way to do that would have been to just pat him on the arm and say, 'Honey, that one's for you.'"

 

Jeff Tweedy returns to stage for an encore:

Man in Crowd - "What did you do back there?"

Jeff Tweedy - "Well, let's see... I walked back there and I stood."

Man in Crowd - "Did you smile?"

Jeff Tweedy - "Yes, I smiled. Your applause makes me smile.... I smiled the smile of a sweetly retarded man."

 

To the same man:

"I hope they don't ever turn on the houselights, because I already have a picture of you in my head and I don't want to be disappointed. Let's see.... right now you are seven feet tall, you are wearing a shirt with cutoff sleeves, and you have a handle bar mustache..... oh, and you rode her on motorcycle with a sidecar."

The most miserable part of the night:

Also he continued on with the Jeff Lepard bit... Had a t-shirt that covered one of his on stage gearboxes that said "jeff lepard. pour some tweedy on me."
