Tracks 1 - 4: Love it. Absolutely love it.

 

Track 5: Slight drop off. I like it well enough though.

 

Track 6: My least favorite Wilco song ever. Really, I don't like to focus on the negative, but this song just kills the album's momentum for me. Why couldn't the Solomon Burke/sing-a-long song go here?

 

Track 7: Nice recovery. I like this song.

 

Track 8: This is probably why the Solomon Burke song didn't make the cut - it would have been too much blue eyed soul. I like this song...up to the chorus. For me, the chorus kills a promising song.

 

Track 9: I like it. Simple (in the best possible way) and pretty...like much of the album.

 

Track 10: The sound quality on my rip is much better than on the mp3 that was floating around earlier this week. Thus, my opinion of this song is now much better. Pretty good.

 

Track 11: Never liked this song. The studio version though is an improvement.

They said there were 17 songs that they were choosing from for the record. Obviously ended up with 12. I am excited for these other 5 to come out--if they do. I'm sure at least a couple will, maybe a studio version of Let's Fight and The Thanks I Get.

 

Anyhoo, on the downside we have another 3 years until the next CD comes out. :no

This record evokes Seals and Croft, Loggins and Messina, The Doobie Brothers, Yes, and Foreigner.

 

Yeah. Remember that Loggins and Messina song that closed with nearly four minutes of rhythmic grooving while the lead guitarist snaked his way through the thing with a note-packed lead that channels Television at their absolute artiest?

 

I fucking hated that song.

I think they should include these in bonus CD or something with the actual store-release. Just so people still buy the album!

did Glenn lose his bass drum? did he lose all his gadgets? while his work here is totally skillful, it's so uninteresting for Kotche, and so edgeless. sigh. I miss those weird things from Pot Kettle Black.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a different part of the record. I don't think he meant that every second of every song evokes Seals & Croft, Loggins & Messina, the Doobies, Yes and Foreigner all at once. I could be wrong, though.

Television is actually rocking though, and raw. Television isn't airbrushed easy listening. How you could compare this record to Television is beyond me.

This album sounds to me like Loose Fur and the Autumn Defense got together and made a record. I mean this in the worst way possible. This album has basically no backbone... it just seems to crumple if you look beneath the surface of it at all. Also, did Glenn forget how to play drums?

I am truly blown away by this album. There were plenty of skepticism leading up to this album and I really truly think Wilco has done it again. All of the songs we didn't hear live are great and all the ones we did hear live have improved. The musicianship on this album is absolutely amazing. No one is mediocre at all, everyone serves the song and floruishes when they need to. People thought Nels might not translate well onto record but he is absoutely amazing throughout the album and the solos on Sky Blue Sky and Be Patient Please are my favoruites. What Light is my favourite and has been since the begining and we will all be singing along with it at the end of shows. On and On and On is a great song now and a perfect closer. All in all I could not be more pleased with this album.

 

i agree 100%. The lyrics are also beautiful. some people are getting turned off by tweedy's deceptively simple lyrics but there's a lot going on in these songs. i resent the notion that What Light is corny; i think it puts a very unique and beautiful spin on a tried-and-true theme. On and On and On is a lovely summation of what I think is one of WIlco's central philosophies: "Please dont cry. We were designed to die."

i'm puzzled as to where the nels hate is coming from. my initial reaction was that there wasn't enough nels guitar freakouts on this album. there's no chunks of noise like at the end of handshake drugs or the beginning of wishful thinking. there's no real craziness. after the last two albums and nels addition i was expecting something really out there. i would've welcomed some noisy craziness anywhere. i was expecting the stuff on YHF and AGIB multiplied.

 

that said. i'm perfectly happy with what i got. this is an album by one of the best bands working that could do anything being perfectly content making an album that sits better alongside music from the big pink than anything sonic youth has done. and they do it as ably as i can imagine anyone out there today doing it. just a very solid record of beautiful songs with heartbreaking guitar solos and the best rhythm section in rock music today.

I expect more. AGIB, YHF, and BT are all life-changing albums IMO. SBS is multiple notches below those. The songs are disproportionaly downtempo, and never get me excited. I might even say that there's not a bad song on this album, they just dont mix up the the tempos enough. The thing is way too damn repetitive. Man, I am very dissapointed.

Leave Me (Like You Found Me) is a really damn good song guys.

 

The one thing I find with all Wilco albums is the tracklisting is absolutely perfect and this album is no exception. They're really good at finding songs that fit well together, all the setlists are like this too.

My thoughts exactly. There's a lot of smooth jazz sounds on here.

 

Which explains a big part of why I don't like it.

 

 

 

Woha woha woha....let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. That was really the only track that made me think of smooth jazz. And I'll probably get used to it and end up liking it. Just as back when I first got into Wilco, I found AM too cheezy to listen to, along with songs like 'say you miss me' and such. Now, I love them.

 

This album is about as far from airbrushed as you could get. The guitars are off tempo at times, Tweedy struggles to hit a few notes, sometimes a guitar sounds a bit out of tune. It's glorious. :)

I feel completely different about the drumming, I think it's excellent. Honestly some of the other stuff he does is a little gimmicky, in a bad way, IMO. If I wanted to see and hear someone beating on freakin' tiles and trash cans I'd go see Stomp.
