First, it should be noted that I love this track

BUT, is there anyone else here who thinks this song should be about twice as long as it is? Yes, it's already 5:35, but when I hear those big guitar slams come in after the second verse, I think it's just begging for a huge epic jam. Or even just add another verse and an explosive final chorus or something. I don't know, I really like it, but to me it has kind of an unfinished feeling. I don't think it would suffer from being any longer since it moves along at such a slow pace

Also, if it were indeed ten minutes long I think it would provide the kind of anchor / centerpiece type song which is the only thing I feel the album is lacking.

What your getting at is that you want another Spiders? I think it was wise to move away from that. Plus any song over 6 mins automaticlly gets a minus in my book.

with keving's picture did anyone else hear dwight when reading his post?

Not necessarily another Spiders. I see the studio version of Spiders as more of a mood / texture piece than an "epic jam" like I want with Shake it Off. I guess I just think the song would use another verse or something.

The Dead and Pink Floyd influences are strong here. It could have been a huge jam, they obviously were trying to stay away from jams on this album. A missed opportunity in my book too.

Also, for SBS, I wonder how all of this is going to come off live. I can't imagine standing at the 9:30 Club and listening to this set of songs. To me, this solitude, mellow album would be much cooler if I saw Wilco playing them at a lounge where you could sit around on velvet couches and listen and chat amongst your friends.

How could you possibly hear it over all the shushing?

The one that I like the least is Impossible Germany.

That said, it all sounds pretty good. I'm looking forward to hearing a higher-quality version of SBS, so that I can fully assess it and decide whether to buy it. Until then, I won't be listening to it again.

Many of the songs on this record give the feel that they could be greatly expanded in a live setting...which I would welcome. But there is nothing about this song that makes me think "Gee, I wish this took up a quarter of the album's running time!"

Although I do kind of feel that way about the middle section of "You Are My Face". :dancing

Shake It Off sounds like nothing to me so much as the revamped live Kingpin. Anybody else getting that vibe? It sags a bit, though, and feels like a plane trying to take off while its docking clamps are still locked. This wasn't one of my favourites live, but they've gussied it up a bit for the album, at least.

I love the chorus of Shake it off, and that whole bit after it. The verse, not so much. Lyrics are cool, vocals okay, but I find the chord progression just a bit...silly. Still like the song though, when the flangy wurly kicks in with the drums and that killer, footstomp groove, it makes it worth it.

"Shake It Off" has the most Phish/Grateful Dead feel to it especially with that phaser-coated electric piano. It could be my least favorite Wilco track to date. The vocals sound lazy. The jam at the end is the kind of music I tend to steer away from. And if a jam is going to erupt, I'd prefer it to sound more like "At Least That's What You Said." Congrats, Nel's guitar - you sound like Joe Walsh and YES :) And that's not meant to be derogatory. But again, classic-rock is not my scene.

I actually think the opposite, it's a song that would have benefitted from some harsh love in the editing room..., editing room..., editing room..., editing room..., editing room. Then again I'm also kind of bored with 57 nothings, as heretical as that might sound on the Wilcoboard.

I also find it troubling that you were hoping for an epic jam. ;)
