SarahC
urgh, Chastain in ATL.Sweet venue BUT BUT BUT noise ordinance restrictions, strict curfew, etc.at least it is not part of the Classic Chastain series. just a guess but I thinktables will be removed in the pit, and chairs put down there. I'll be there, and up close so I can hear.so pit's the way to go there then? i guess i will have to set aside the day tickets go on sale to get a spot in the pit... SarahC
Chastain Park has a capacity of 6700. Fox Theater (where they played last time) has a capacity of 4400. That's not too big of a jump. However, Chastain is a horrible place to see a show. I predict this will be the one and only time they will play there. The audiences there are notoriously rude to the bands, regardless of who that band is. Ask Neil Young, who had to stop one of his acoustic songs on the Greenville tour and tell the audience to quiet down so he could hear himself. Ask Garrison Keillor, Lyle Lovett, Randy Newman, Ricky Lee Jones or Dan Fogelberg, all of whom have left the stage in frustration (see question # 7 on this link: http://www.cmt.com/news/articles/1535357/0..._garrison.jhtml ) Ask Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, who was hit with cheese thrown at him by an audience member. Based on the people seated near me at the Fox show a couple years ago, I have zero confidence that the behavior of the audience at this show will be any better than the behavior of the fans at a typical Chastain concert.Yeah, I have the tape of that Neil Show where he told the crowd they reminded him of Vegas... I wonder if it'd be worth it to skip and hold out for a Nashville date? I hate it when the audience is evil.
welch79
finally us dates! let's go see us some wilco, boys and gulls.
watch me fall
JUN-20 CHARLOTTE, NC OVENS AUDITORIUM tba I'll be there! Son Volt in May and Wilco in June. It's shaping up to be a decent summer.
you ever seen a ghost?
the Charlotte show is a little bit too far away for me to drive...hopefully they'll add a VA date. -justin
viatroy
I've been to Shelburne VT many times ... one of my favorite destinations. There's a museum (or two?) there, and I take it the show is on the museum grounds. Shelburne Farms (not clear if the two are affiliated) is around the corner, and has a pricey lodge, and the world's best baby farm animal petting zoo for which I am a total sucker, and majestic views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack High Peaks. Just gorgeous. I'll take this over a NYC concert any day of the week. Im on the road starting mid-to-late July.
Mr. Tony Margaritatime
Yeah, I have the tape of that Neil Show where he told the crowd they reminded him of Vegas... I wonder if it'd be worth it to skip and hold out for a Nashville date? I hate it when the audience is evil. If you live in TN, I would not waste your time making a road trip to Chastain. It's a beautiful venue, BUT as formentioned, there are too many issues to make it worth it. I would hold out. I volunteered there one summer to get into some free shows....shudder...it was bad
Hippycat
Ask Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, who was hit with cheese thrown at him by an audience member. Who brings cheese to a concert?
DawgSong
I wonder if it'd be worth it to skip and hold out for a Nashville date? I hate it when the audience is evil. NO.....this is NOT part of the Classic Chastain series and most likely those CC ticket holders (ie wine n cheesers)will not be offered a pre-sale. The place will be Wilco folk. I have minor problems with Chastain although it is great place to see a show. The earlier post about all the bands who hate Chastain is somewhat correct yet needs clarification. Most bands mentioned were part of the "series". Peoplebuy a package of say 8 shows. They may only care for one band but go socialize during the other 7. I have skipped manya bands I wanted to see when the single sale tickets were part of the "series" for the very reasons which were stated. This show is not and will not be a part of the "summer series" at Chastain. This will be a Wilco show, Beer n Peanuts crowd, lol.
isadorah
the Atlanta venue really isn't worth the drive? are you sure? i too am hoping for a VA/DC venue. that would be ideal, especially if everything else in my life falls into order. can that hurry up already so i can plan my wilco concert schedule. jff
so pit's the way to go there then? i guess i will have to set aside the day tickets go on sale to get a spot in the pit... Chastain has two basic concert set-ups. One is a table set-up in which the "floor" or "pit" section is all tables. The people who sit at the tables bring candelabras and have their table catered, or bring upscale food and beverages, and thoroughly ignore whatever act is on stage. They treat the event as a dinner out with friends or business associates, rather than a concert. People in the stands often bring in their own folding table and tablecloths, etc and set them up in front of their seats. For these concerts, all audience memebrs are allowed to bring in coolers with food, alcohol or whatever. The other is a typical rock concert setup, with the tables removed and replaced with chairs, and no coolers are allowed at these shows. I suspect this will be the setup Wilco chooses (though the lack of tables is absolutely not a guarantee of a respectful audience). Aside from the front table section, the venue is set up with long bench-style seats and a small lawn at the very back. One other gripe about Chastain, it is not convenient to anything and is not on the bus or rail line, so you have to drive to get there. Gripes or no gripes, I intend to be there. The venue is fine. Quite nice actually. A beautiful WPA era amphitheatre. It is the people there that are typically the problem. For the summer series, they allow folks to bring food and drink, candles for tables, etc. You end up with lots of chatty people who aren't paying attention to the show. And, if this has any meaning to you, it is usually a very 'Buckhead' crowd. Hopefully, this one will be a little different. I've seen 2-3 shows at Chastain without the table setup with better crowds than the typical Chastain crowd. BTW - this isn't Wilco's first stop at Chastain. They opened for REM there a few years back.
jff
Who brings cheese to a concert? People who go to concerts at Chastain. They bring fig leaves and quiche, too. Like I said before, the Wilco concert will probably be "No Coolers Allowed", so the chances of the Wilco guys getting pelted with cheese are slim, but the annoying audience chatter is always guaranteed at Chastain. Hopefully they'll play The Norva in Norfolk again, that last time they were here was September 2004

I believe the infamous Neil Young/Lucinda Williams show was NOT part of a series, and is well known as an example of poor audience behavior. Obviously I hope the crowd for Wilco will be respectful and have a good time, but there just seems to be something about the venue that brings out the worst in audiences. There is something about the venue - primarily its location - that brings out the worst audiences. I don't think that people who otherwise are respectful turn into rude audience members at Chastain. I think Chastain draws a crowd of rude, self-centered dilettantes who won't venture into a loud, crowded smoky intown venue for a show. As I said on another board, I hope the band will open the set with a couple of noisefests to run off some of the social attendees.

Chastain Park Amphitheater is literally right in the middle of an exclusive country-club/old-money style community.
blues7739
Do they usually do a pre-sale? I'm desperately trying to get to my first show, and I was wondering what the best way to get tickets would be.
