Mr. Heartbreak
Not a place I was expecting to see our boys name-checked ... Helvetica Article It's shaping up to be a big year for Helvetica. The world's most widely used sans-serif font turns 50 in 2007, and to celebrate, the Museum of Modern Art has launched a year-long tribute to the ubiquitous typeface, which was the first acquired by the Museum for its permanent collection. Meanwhile, back in March at the SXSW FIlm Festival, I managed to squeeze into a packed screening of a documentary titled simply Helvetica. The directorial debut of Gary Hustwit (he previously produced the Wilco film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart)...
Sir Stewart
That dude Gary Hustwit - his family was at the same screening of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart I was. They were freaking out over his name on the poster outside the theater - it was pretty cool.

Sir Stewart
Then you're not gonna love this: Ban Comic Sans. I remember that from a while back - it's odd that they use Comic Sans as the primary font for their anti-Comic Sans propoganda.

isadorah
How exactly does a museum acquire a font and then what does it do with it? huh, very good question. i've worked in museums for years, and that is quite the, how does one do that. maybe they got their hands on the original lead type (how amazing would that be to see). it probably wasn't nearly as glamorous. more like they paid the foundry a lot of money and found all sorts of stuff that used helvetica and called it part of the permanent collection. i personally favor helvetica neue, although for one exhibition i recently designed, i got to make giant 3' tall x 2' deep helvetica letters. maybe i should see if MoMA wants them for their collection. a side note: a goal of mine is to someday use Dom Casual in something and make it beautiful. it's good to have impossible goals!
