Reni
It's so frightening - I am so glad that, as far as we know, no one was killed today. Vibes and prayers for all in the UK.

Reni
Glasgow attack seen tied to London bombs By IAN STEWART, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago GLASGOW, Scotland - A Jeep Cherokee trailing a cascade of flames rammed into Glasgow airport on Saturday, shattering glass doors just yards from passengers lined up at the check-in counters. Police said they believed the attack was linked to two car bombs found in London the day before. Britain raised its terror alert to "critical"
tugmoose
Prayers and vibes to my fellow Scots (I'm clan MacDonald) and all in the UK. On a related note, what effect might these incidents have on travel plans? My niece is slated to visit the UK next month, and a certain band is supposed to play Glasgow in two weeks. OOO
Yes, vibes to our UK friends. On top of all this terrorist crap, the season finale of Dr. Who was today and they won't have another episode for 6 months.
Albert Tatlock
pretty scary. ben and i would have been in the UK this week if we had actually followed thru on a honeymoon...Good decision. After a lovely April, weather has been crap this summer so far. On a related note, what effect might these incidents have on travel plans? My niece is slated to visit the UK next month, and a certain band is supposed to play Glasgow in two weeks.Glasgow airport is back open today. Haven't heard of any extra security being imposed at airports - but check with carriers if any extra time is required for check-in etc. All supposed to be Al-Qaeda's calling card to new PM Gordon Brown. The Diana concert is a high profile event today - fingers crossed for that (though the music looks rubbish apart from Jones The Voice ). Also Wimbledon. Funny that one of the London car bombs had already been towed away from where it had been parked by extra-vigilant parking ticket-wardens and the car was made safe in their car pound. Tube travel to work on Monday may be 'interesting'. I think Wilco should leave the sacred rug behind as a security precaution this time. It's too precious to risk. Much appreciated it made the trip last time bjor№_skurj et al It's a truly messed up world, although I had to laugh at the absurdity of it all - Itchy and Scratchy as terrorist propaganda - "Hamas 'Mickey Mouse' killed off" : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6257594.stm I have been saddened at the way the Palestinian factions have been tearing their fledgling country apart in the past few months and shedding any possible sympathy they might have had from neutrals. As always with these things it's the vast majority of the population just trying to get on with their lives who lose out.
bobbob1313
This is all really scary and I'm really keeping the UK VC peeps in my thoughts. You guys are troopers, and I hope you guys are all right. If this happened in the US, we'd all duct tape our doors shut and tune into Fox News.
Albert Tatlock
... and tune into Fox News.'cos you need to know what Paris H. is up to right? Sickeningly, that has even made lead story on the commercial channel news here. BBC has got sucked in, but less so. The fascination is just as crazy as the Hamas story. Here's one for a Beatles fan: it was 50 years ago today ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/wellme..._proginfo.shtmlNot sure if US folks can use the 'listen again' feature after this has broadcast on Tuesday. Also, Yoko Ono was on Desert Island discs the other Sunday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desert..._20070610.shtmlSurprisingly little screeching.

As always with these things it's the vast majority of the population just trying to get on with their lives who lose out. This makes me so sad. Last night I saw a wonderful documentary on Independent Lens about Sesame Street around the world and how in each country people come together in to talk about the needs their children have to feel safe and what skills and lessons they can learn. It was a beautiful program. On Sesame Street in Kosovo they are promoting friendship between Albanians and Serbians. Even some of the adults exposed their prejudices and hatred, but one woman said - "even if the older children have already have these feelings, by planting these new ideas in them, it will widen the gap for tolerance in the next generation." It showed such hope for the future, reconciliation and peace. They were also talking about the dangers kids face, like picking up live grenades, etc. And so they were discussing how to teach children to stay away from these things. I loved it because each country's version of Sesame Street isn't the US version with overdub, but truly a show unique to the needs and realities of their culture. Independent Lens - Sesame Street And then I read that story about the Palestinian Mickey Mouse? Fuck.
Welsh Rich
I managed to get through Stansted last night before anything happened. Certainly security didn't feel that much greater than on previous times through the airport, but perhaps that's a good thing. They've certainly changed their passport control there now though, much more complicated and formal.

Sir Stewart
They were reportedly "controlled" blasts by bomb experts. I'll try to find the link. EDIT: It's been folded into this story. On Monday, a bomb disposal unit performed at least two controlled explosions on a suspicious device at a hospital where one of the suspects in Saturday's Glasgow attack is being treated for severe burns. Watch as bomb squad arrives at hospital Video A CNN crew at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Glasgow heard two blasts, which occurred about an hour after a bomb disposal truck was spotted outside the medical facility. MattZ
I'd be interested to know what the bomb squad detonated -- whether it was a real threat or someone's handbag that they forgot in the lobby or waiting area.
Synthesizer Patel
So, there have been two more blasts at the hospital where the suspect from the earlier bombing is being treated. Source: CNN Do controlled explosions carried out by the police on suspect packages/cars count as blasts nowadays? Top notch news reporting there then. Also, did you get the news about the mass floodings last week where 4 people died? But, then spending money on updating the sewage systems and flood protection isn't really top priority right now, nor internationally news worthy . . . man bites dog and all that. Edit: sorry, it took me a while to reply and I see that the controlled explosions thing has been explained already.
darkstar
When this was going on Saturday I really enjoyed the interviews with the eye witnesses...The one guy who went after one of the bombers was great. I wonder if he gave him a "Glasgow Kiss" Nice to see a citizen step up like that. Especially a Scotsman ( My family is Scottish and Irish)
