Analogman
They should be really cool - considering the cost. Select your iPhone Rate Plans for iPhone
Welsh Rich
Alex Ross has endorsed it on his blog... http://www.therestisnoise.com/2007/07/endorsement.html It has been announced today that the 02 network in the UK will be the solo carriers of the iPhone when it comes over here... which is the network I'm on, but I'm not totally convinced... muller
im gonna get one when my contract with o2 needs renewing in November. im always up for a new gadget.
OOO
I played with one in the Apple store this past weekend. I can confirm that they are really cool. But they aren't perfect. Most sane people seem to be willing to wait until they add some very necessary improvements including: -3G support instead of EDGE, so the phone isn't slow when you are away from WiFi-GPS in the device -Better Camera functionality -Better Email functionality -Instant Messaging and MMS. -Using your iTunes music for ringtones. -Allowing 3rd party developers to make applications!!!! Some of these are minor, some aren't, but it has a lot of room for improvement. That being said, the phone really is amazing when its in your hand and you are doing stuff like surfing, using google maps, etc. all the touch screen stuff just feels right; they spent a lot of time on the "feel" of the phone, which really is astounding, and did make me kind of want to reach for my wallet. But not yet. Interesting tidbit: While registering, if you enter your social security number as 999-99-9999 you will fail AT&T's credit check and they will allow you to activate the phone without agreeing to a 2 year plan. You get access to different (some of them less expensive) plans, and can cancel your service at any time.
cryptique
According to these posts, there are ways to enjoy an iPhone without submitting to AT&T -- assuming you don't mind that it won't actually function as a phone. Also, this seems to suggest that you could probably activate it on some other network if you could figure out how. I haven't tried any of this myself ... just pulling links off of BoingBoing. solace
agree w/ your points Oblivious... once they get 3g i'll definitely consider one they are definitely super slick though. there's a lot of features i'd miss from my Blackberry Pearl that hopefully will get added in time. Welsh Rich
You're a blackberry user Kyle? I deal with them day in day out and I wouldn't touch one at all... Find them very, very buggy.

Welsh Rich
Yeah, we're still using the one's with the side wheel, though I've not been impressed with the 8300 "nipple" feels very cheap and nasty.

W(TF)
Too pricey for me. And they aren't likely to come down in price for a while either. Taking the iPhone apart
a.miller
-3G support instead of EDGE, so the phone isn't slow when you are away from WiFiI've heard this is the biggie in the problem department. A few reviews I have read said web pages were taking more than 2 minutes to load. I think if you could use this phone on any network, it would be a knockout.

Sweet Papa Crimbo
and are they really that cool? Don't need a fucking $600 phone...even though they look cool. I only have 3 people that ever call me.

a.miller
Werd. I have a dirt-cheap cell phone and it still seems like a Tricorder to me.Me too. I have the free one that came with my service plan. At my current rate of use, $600 worth of service will last me till death.
cryptique
Werd. I have a dirt-cheap cell phone and it still seems like a Tricorder to me.Strictly cheap-ass Tracfone prepaid for me, because we never use the thing. I might be interested in the iPhone strictly as a music player/organizer/WiFi websurfing device, but not at that price.
anodyne
i do the prepaid cheap phone sorta thing because there's no one i want to talk to for $600.
Dude
weird... never had a problem with mine. I'm besaddled with a 7250 that I have to reboot all the time. It probably doesn't help that I have 50,000 apps loaded on it.
Welsh Rich
Yeha, those 7250's are a real pain, unfortunately their the main handheld used here until the upgrades come through. I've got a motorola razr and that's fine for me!

Calexico
Too expensive for me to justify. I already have an mp3 player that is very fine, thank you Creative. My Nokia does the job too. I'd rather drink the money.
quarter23cd
As cool as that thing looks, I have no practical need for it. I already have a phone with a camera I rarely use, and web/texting features I never use. The more features they add, cool as they may be, I never use them because I hate being nickel and dimed to death on the bill. I already pay too much for the amount I actually use my phone. I guess I'm a tech-geek by profession only. In my personal life I actually tend to shun most of these gadgets. (Except you, iPod. I'll always love you...)
