i thought this album was absolutely aweful the first few listens but have to admit that it is growing on me.

I have never understood the Jenny Lewis love around here. Her stuff sounds like bland Lisa Loab-ish stuff to me. Is there some great disc she put out that I need to hear? I have heard the solo disc because my wife digs it and I justl don't hear anything special there.

i've only listened to it once too, very disappointing. but it was a disappointment i expected after hearing two songs off of it... i'll give it a few more shots before i totally write it off though.

while i do agree with the pitchfork review, any tiny shred of respect i may have still had for them went out the window when they gave "challengers" a 6.0...

Well I agree with Pitchfork in that Challengers isnt the New Pornos' best record. It seemed to me that Pitchfork wanted them to keep going with the all out all Twin Cinema sound (no space in the music), which I believe they perfected and decided to move on.

i streamed it on Myspace Friday at work out of curiosity.

hated it.

monday i was bored and knew that Best Buy was selling it for 7.99, so i decided to give it another chance.

for whatever reason i loved it, bought it and am really enjoying it.

take it in context of what they were going for.

pitchfork doesn't like anything unless they're aping Pet Sounds or Beatles* (believe anytime i read a record review and it mentions Pet Sounds i usually get it and love it) but i think it takes some guts to take on this ground.

*although 15 has a nice theremin solo and Smoke Detecktor has a very early Beatle-y sounding lead guitar/solo

I don't think this is their best record, but it is not nearly as bad as I was led to believe by all the harsh criticisms I've read. To me this is a fun pop record with a liberal injection of 70's dance and soul. Lyrically it is lighter than previous efforts, but buoyant music like this usually doesn't carry the weight of the world in it's words; it's more about the hooks, melodies and grooves. The next one will probably return to more introspective and worldly concerns, until then, I'll enjoy this one for what it is, a good time summer record; nothing more, nothing less.

i'd be fine if this one was "more about the hooks, melodies, and grooves", but the hooks just ain't there other than 2-3 songs...

while the album as a whole isn't awful, there ARE definitely some truly awful songs on the album, that's for certain.

as for the new NP's, Twin Cinema was, and still is, easily my least fave NP record, the new one is way way better, but still their 3rd best

how do you feel about porn?

Love some of the comments about this record from various email friends/lists:

'Amy picked up the RK last night and we drove the whole disc. All I kept thinking is I couldn't wait to get home and watch some 70's full-bush soft-core.'

'It's a neck & neck race between this and that Steve Earle cover for suckiest song of the year.'

actually this thing is starting grow on me, like an STD. No way this will ever be a purchase though.

I think the entire album is a rip-off... not really any original ideas in it at all...

EDIT: ok, so the more I listen to it the more I like a couple of the songs. Close Call is great, but the first track just grates with me...

Silver Lining is single two, with video already circulating.

i don't really see how that riff is a rip off My Sweet Lord (which famously got George sued over).

sure it has a slide in the notes but it is not exact or anything.

The opening riff is nearly identical to the opening riff to "My Sweet Lord." And yeah, I recognize the irony here (doo lang doo lang doo lang :) ), but it's pretty clear to my ears...

i would have to hear them in succession.

i know the guitar sound is similiar and playing as well, but the guitar playing in Smoke Detektor(sp?) is a lot like George's around Hard Days time - yet no one is saying anything about that (pitchfork did mention it i think).

i don't think a similiar riff is damning though. now if the chords underneath and jenny sang the same melody then they'd possibly face trouble - although i don't know that Harrison's widow would pursue THAT song in particular. actually the Beatles have never brought any musical lawsuits (related directly to the music content) as far as i know - and i have heard a few songs that sound like some of theirs.

now if the song was heavy metal and revolved around a riff that was ripped from Metallica or something, then that might be trouble.

Dejalo is definitely their version of Gloria Estefan - i have thought that from the beginning.

I don't mind the hooks are grooves (I like them, actually), but the songwriting is decidedly weaker than I'd expect. Still, I don''t think Under the Blacklight is anything as terrible as some of the reviews make it out to be. (I don't read Pitchfork, so no love loss there.)
