If I could through a breaking ball or curveball, even I could get Wily Mo out. Hopefully the Sox sucker some team into a deal for em like the Reds did with us.

He'll have more success in the NL. NL pitchers throw more fastballs, don't they?

Is that so? How big of a difference between the AL and NL? Because if it's close, it could probably just be attributed to the fact that in the NL they get to pitch to the pitcher, who can more easily be gotten out just by whizzing a heater past him.

Also, regardless of which league throws more breaking balls on average, if it's well known that Pena can't hit a curve, he's going to see a ton of curveballs regardless of what league he's in.

I dunno, someone posted an article on another board that said NL pitchers have a tendency to throw more fastballs, though it may just be the pitchers hitting thing. I'm looking for the article right now.

I still think Pena's going to get 600 at bats for someone and hit 35-40 home runs some year, and if the price is right, I wouldn't mind the Marlins grabbing him.

Bonds reportedly preparing to sue Schilling

Bonds reportedly preparing to sue Schilling

August 16, 2007

NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Barry Bonds has bolstered his legal team and could be preparing to slap a lawsuit on Curt Schilling, the New York Daily News reported on its web site Thursday.

According to the report, Bonds retained San Francisco attorney Todd Schneider and Oakland attorney John Burris to represent him in a possible defamation lawsuit against the veteran Boston Red Sox pitcher.

"There's no guarantee any action will be taken," Burris told the newspaper. "The most important thing to communicate is that Barry's silence up until now is not an admission to anything."

Bonds, who hit career home run No. 756 on August 7 to pass Hank Aaron for the most in baseball history, already is the subject of the BALCO steroids investigation and is represented by Michael Rains in that matter. The BALCO grand jury reconvenes next month.

On the HBO program "Costas Now," Schilling discussed Bonds' former mistress, Kimberly Bell, and her potentially damaging grand-jury testimony. She reportedly testified that Bonds told her about his steroid use.

"If I wrote a book about Bob Costas and in that book I wrote about Bob Costas' girlfriend being on the road, and Bob Costas giving that girlfriend card-show money and I outlined your daily steroid regimen, I've got to believe your first line of defense is to sue my (butt) off," Schilling said on the program.

Schneider and Burris issued joint statements, the newspaper reported.

"Mr. Bonds retained Schneider and Burris because of the false nature of these statements," the statement read. "While pursuing Hank Aaron's home run record, Barry felt that it was more prudent to remain silent. Now that the record has been broken, Burris and Schneider will evaluate any and all statements attributed to him that are false."

Bonds belted his 759th career homer on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves.

Certainly arguable how significant this is, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

Jayson Stark, of ESPN.com, reports Detroit Tigers OF Curtis Granderson could be the first American League player since the division-play era to make it through an entire 162 game season without grounding out into a double play. If Granderson continues his current pace, he would have the most at-bats (627) without a GIDP since GIDP became an official stat in 1939.

another barnburner between the Reds & Cubs today

the cubs needed that something awful.

now i get to see the next two games in person. i think the cubs are 0-9 (including nefi perez's double error in the 9th memorial day weekend 2006) in games i attended the last 3 years so i would find your nearest bookie and fade me hard.

And he's going to catch a ton of shit for this, just like he caught a ton of shit for not suing him.

Probably. Because he will not end up suing him when it boils down to it. He more than likely would have to be deposed and I doubt Bonds wants to give a deposition under oath. He'd legally be forced to tell the truth for a change.

Bonds catches shit for not suing the authors of Game of Shadows (wait...didn't he threaten to sue them, too?) because he denies allegations made in it yet does nothing to legally challenge it.

Bonds, once again, puts himself in a position that is sure to bear unfavorably on him.

He legally was forced to tell the truth when he was in front of the grand jury.

And the reason he didn't sue the authors of the book is because it is incredibly hard to prove that they were being libelous, because you have to prove that they did so with the intention of defaming you. It wouldn't be so hard to do with Schilling, but with them, it's hard to prove they went out of their way to defame him.

The price might be right very soon:

"The Red Sox are designating outfielder Wily Mo Pena for assignment to create a roster spot of Clay Buchholz. That would give the Sox 10 days to either trade or release Pena. If Buchholz comes up, he could be optioned back to the PawSox after the game, creating an opening for veteran outfielder Bobby Kielty."

Wow, it looks like the Tribune Company is still shelling out money. Zambrano re-signs for 5 years, $18.03 million, with a player option for the 6th year. I wonder why they couldn't take on money at the trade deadline.

"Wily Mo Pena has been traded to the Washington Nationals, one of the teams frequently mentioned as a potential landing spot, for cash considerations and a player to be named later."

Austin Kearns (RF) went down with a hamstring injury the other night, so this was a good move for the Nats.

They also signed their 20th draft pick out of 20 (LHP Jack McGeary) yesterday, one of only two teams to do so.

Manny Acta is being mentioned in some circles as a manager of the year candidate.

Lots of good news coming out of D.C. baseball these days despite the record...
