solace
y'know... i expected them to not sound as great outdoors at the Walker in front of 8,000 people, but it was honestly one of the best sounding Bon Iver shows i've seen, and they definitely impressed a ton of people who had obviously never seen 'em before. Cloud Cult kinda stole the show though it seemed like, and actually a majority of the folks i talked to (and myself included) felt that the New Porns were the weakest act of the night (Andrew Bird closed out the show), which was a bit of a bummer. they were good, but missing both Neko and Dan, and i dunno, energy just wasn't quite there compared to the other times i've seen them. they also played in the most heat of the day too (thankfully it wasn't TOO too hot). hardwood floor
Hardwood Floor, I doubt you would like this, judging by what you do like. It doesn't seem your thing. interesting comment! not sure how you know what i like but i guess maybe there was a "what are your 10 favorite bands" thread or something? actually, i like everything from yes to times new viking to the monkees to gene loves jezebel to the chi-lites to uncle tupelo to gordon lightfoot, so i like to think i'm kinda open to everything! That's good to hear. We were at the Walker a week later, checking out the mini golf and watching some live art. I wished we could have rearranged our trip to be there for the shows, but it just wasn't in the cards. That's too bad about the New Pornos--especially since that's the kind of review they've gotten from several other people who've seen them in the last few months. Hopefully both Dan and Neko will be at the Hideout Block Party.
cooperissup3r
I just hope this isn't a fluke, of the moment kind of album. For Emma was the grace that helped me through last winter. I hope Mr. Vernon has more of that grace to share. i've heard two of his songs that i assume are his that aren't on For Emma... they sound very good. there's a video of one that he plays after the song For Emma on youtube that is pretty cool sounding....can't really understand the lyrics just yet, but yeah...i like it. and Lump Sum unlistenable? whaaaa.......? you'll love 'em. i've seen them 10x now since October and every one has been just awesome. bummed i might have to miss his First Ave show in August, but hoping the wedding we're going to is done early enough i wish he'd come to texas... a.miller
I listened to this album again last night. It's truly an experience every time I hear it. So moving, so powerful.
LouieB
Excellent. Let us know how it goes. I hope you enjoy. I mentioned this in the p4k thread; the entire thing translated badly even at the small stage. It was crowded, noisy, the other stage was bleeding over to the small one and it was totally unimpressive. Time for a club date. LouieB

LouieB They took so damn long setting up at p4k and the girl and I wanted to be semi-close for Spoon so we left the B stage at 7:40 in order to get closer for Spoon. Bon Iver still hadn't started and I was really looking forward to getting my first live taste of them.

P4k was simply not a good place for this sort of act LouieB Agreed - the music is so delicate and hushed, it's not a great fit for a festival. Even when I saw him at the teeny-tiny Lakeshore Theater earlier this year, the clinking of glasses at the bar in the lobby was distracting from the performance. Where do you think he should play in Chicago? I'd say maybe a seated show at the Vic.

Yeah, I'm a little concerned about this too seeing him at the Performing Arts Center in Charleston. It's a pretty big place, and I'm sure people will be chatting and trying to find their seats while he's playing. But I should still be able to hear him well since I'll be on the front row. solace
hmm... guess it depends on the show, because i've seen Justin (Bon Iver) play in front of less than 30 people and as many as 8,000 recently with a bill of Bon Iver > Cloud Cult > New Pornographers > Andrew Bird, and he killed it even in front of that many people outside on a sunny afternoon. of the 10x i've seen him now, only 2 or 3 have been just average, rest have been stunning

solace
he's been re-working a lot of the songs already... i've probably heard 3 or 4 completely different takes on Creature Fear... always the sign of a great artist imo.

He may very well have killed it at Pitchfork, but you couldn't hear a damn thing because the sound bleed from Spiritualized was so atrocious. I gave up after half a song. Curious, solace - sounds like a great bill with New Pornos, Cloud Cult, Bird, etc. - were there other stages going on at the same time? I think he'd do fine in front of a big crowd if the venue was appropriate. For instance, I think he'd have been a great addition to the Pitchfork preview show at the Pritzker last Thursday night. Killer Whales
For Emma, Forever Ago has been one of my favorite albums in I can't remember how long, so I sent an email to the band telling them so, and Justin was gracious enough to give me 2 free tickets to the sold out show at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The show was last night and it was so incredible. He played everything from the album as well as some covers and a new song which featured him singing in a lower register (and it rocked pretty hard too!). The band sounded great and Justin's voice was in fine form. Highlight's for me were Blindsided which had an outstanding jazzy guitar solo at the end, Wolves, which was darker and more anthematic in a live setting, Creature Fear which had a new arrangement which turned it into an almost country number, and Re: Stacks, which I can imagine brought more people than just me to the brink of tears. He also brought out the trombone player from the album to take a solo on For Emma that was a really nice touch, and ended the show with a completely unplugged cover of Lovin's for Fools by Sarah Siskind which had harmony vocals by Bowerbirds. Overall, one of the best shows I've ever seen
