OOO
Seriously, this guy basically invented the electric guitar AND multitrack recording. His early stuff and collaborations with Mary Ford still sound futuristic and unique to this day! A great musician and inventor. Discuss. Edit: sorry for the typo in the title. JerseyMike
Very true. He actually lives 20 minutes from me here in Jersey. Tom Dowd did some pretty amazing things as well. Expanded Paul's multi-tracking system and worked on the Manhattan Prjoect...
Lammycat
Dr. Robert Moog was pretty innovative with the synthesizer, as well. But yeah, Les Paul....
jimmyjimmy
Seriously, this guy basically invented the electric guitar AND multitrack recording. Les Paul has had a profound influence on my life through his music and the guitars he designed. Now Les didn't invent the electric guitar, and right off the top of my head I can't really recall who'd get that credit. It's arguable that he didn't even really invent the solid body "Spanish" electric. There was a great deal of development going on amongst a small number of people simultaneously; ( Clayton Orr "Doc" Kaufman and Leo Fender, George Van Eps, Paul Bigsby via an idea by Merle Travis and another earlier collaborative effort by Adolph Rickenbacher and George Beauchamp ). All that said, Les rocks. I've seen him play and the old guy is still amazingly spry. Or at least he was a few years back. All of those Paul/Ford records are as cool as can be. I got some serious love for old "Rhubarb Red"; ( a name he went by early in his career ).
jff
In addition to his technichal achievements, Les is one of the greatest guitarists ever. I doubt most of the other inventors/innovators in the music industry could play their way out of a paper bag.
SarahC
what an odd typo especially considering all the beatles threads of late... les paul=genius

ZenLunatic
I remember seeing Oysterhead where Trey was playing a Antler guitar where it would make sounds when he twisted the various antlers.
tugmoose
Les, Paul.
Lammycat
I remember seeing Oysterhead where Trey was playing a Antler guitar where it would make sounds when he twisted the various antlers. It's based on another cool pioneering musical instrument, the theremin. You move your hands around the instrument (in Trey's case, the antlers) without actually touching them. This creates sounds based on varied frequencies depending on what area you are in proximity to. Pretty cool effects, too.
Jesusetc84
Random fact; in 2002, my friends grandmother was dating Les Paul. I've lost touch with him since college, but he had pics and a signed Les Paul to prove it.

Kalle
Yep. It's really great actually, I never knew much about Les until I saw it and I can't believe the impact on music and guitar he has had. It's fantastic.
