Guest David Puddy
It depends on the weather and the time of day, really. i also feel like it depends on where you're going. everytime i drive down to southern illinois, it's always bluegrass, but i feel like if i were driving to new york, it'd be something more like the velvet underground. the dead if i was heading to california. dylan if it's raining. poppydawn
Another vote for "London Calling". It's also perfect flight music.Anything Springsteen, especially from the '70s, although that's pretty obvious. I've always liked his 1986 3-disc live set for road trips."Being There" is my favorite Wilco roadtrip choice. If I'm driving south and avoiding interstates, I'm all about the classic country. Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Hank, Patsy ... For exceptionally long trips, there's got to be some really stupid, sing-a-long-able stuff to ease road-induced slappiness. Dead Milkmen. "The Badger Song" is particularly poignant if you've been on the road more than eight hours and have recently created roadkill.
woman at the bar
"Being There" is my favorite Wilco roadtrip choice.definitely a good one for wide open spaces. I used that when I would go up to Bozeman Montana from Denver. Those lone nights in the car are one of my most memorable road trips. for me, it's anything Built to Spill - especially Perfect From Now On
LouieB
For country driving....country music....!!! LouieB
stickman
I dug a lot of Indie Jams during my drive across the country. Stuff like old Modest Mouse and Built to Spill and some Yo La Tengo... all those songs that are 6 or 7 minutes plus.
Lammycat
A of of different things pop into my head when I try to think of great driving tunes as it kind of depends on the drive: distance/route/destination/company you're with/etc. There are some albums that almost always work for me, though: I'll back up Wilco's Being There, as well. Great for introspection on solo drives or sharing with a car-full of people. Meat Puppets, Up on the Sun. Simply put, an incredibly fun album: psychedelia/frazzled Country/post-punk Pop with fun lyrics and bizarrely painted images. The Feelies, The Good Earth. Great rhythms and beats that scream for the open road. Son Volt, The Search. Live Todd Snider. His between tune banter/stories are always amusing and play off the songs really well. Another great artist to listen to for both introspection and a good laugh. Sonny Sharrock. Just about anything from the Jazz guitar master will do. Leo Kottke, Standing in My Shoes and 6 & 12 String Guitars. Amazing to listen to anywhere, really. And the GD. There's such a wide range of eras to choose from to meld with any road trip. For a change I'll pop in Some Jazz is Dead, Jay Z's Dead, Reggae Dead, Pickin' on the Dead, etc. from time to time.

tongue-tied
i don't think anyone's mentioned this yet, but London Calling is a real good one. Beck's Guero is also very good on the road, i barely play it anywhere but my car.

zoom
Ditto Tom Waits' Real Gone -- loud, on a deserted two lane highway alone in the dark. Terrifying.
