mountain bed
Dodd dropped out. That's a bummer. So will Biden and Richardson pretty soon I'd guess. I don't get the primary here until May. By that time there will just be two left. Hell, that could happen by Feb. 6. Biden, too.Damn.
deepseacatfish
Yes. We need a report from our man in Iowa. Some trenchant, first person stuff would be appreciated. Ok, here's what I got from tonight...Iowa is as polarized as any other place in the U.S. The only thing that both sides agree on is they want something different. Huckabee? Are there really that many evangelicals in Iowa? Remind me not to consider moving there. A black man with the name Barack Hussein Obama stomps on the terra in a state that is 95% white? I'm totally ok with Obama winning tonight. I must say that I was a little disappointed with the showing from the second tier guys though. Richardson 2%. Sen. Joe 1%. Dodd less than 1%. C'mon, what's wrong with any of these guys? They'd beat any of the Republican candidates like a gong in a 2-person debate, and the general as well imo.Let's see, there were a lot more people at the caucus than I expected (seeing as how small Grinnell is), it was pretty low-key for the most part, lots of older folks etc. Nobody had any interest in Dodd, Biden and Richardson had a handful, Kucinich had two people I was most surprised with the 1st tier dudes/dudettes, Obama took our precinct by a pretty decent margin, followed closely by Edwards, but Clinton was barely a viable candidate which kinda surprised me...but then again she was the only major candidate who didn't come to Grinnell proper. There wasn't a whole lot of shouting and madness (sadly) but it was fun, I jumped for Obama. I'm not surprised about Huckabee that dude had mad luck here and definitely appeals way more than a Mormon or a New Yorker (again why Clinton may have lost around here). We're pretty wicked white, but with Oprah's support middle-class white women will jump on any candidate. Just sayin.

Barack got 50% of the vote, Edwards 30% and HC was a distant third with around 20%. A total ass-kicking. After Col. Leslie posted that about Biden I went back and read the news. Sigh. It looks like the Republican thing may be far more interesting (unpredictable). The handicappers will be in heaven there.
Griddles
After attending my first caucus here is my report from Newton IA:The middle school gym where it was to be held was not big enough so each precinct had to go to individual classrooms. In my precinct (I am a slight Republican we do things differently than Democrats, there is no haggling or funny math of 'viability' we just vote) Huckabee got 41 votes, Mit 26, Paul 11, Thomson 11, McCain 11, Rudy 2. Then I stuck around to hear the planks people wanted presented for the parties platform. These people were crazy. We took a vote to see if the death penalty should be used on people selling narcotics to children. It passed with flying colors. What? Oh well.P.S. I was for Paul
bjorn_skurj
Franklin Roosevelt was a rich dude who helped the common folk. Was he a hypocrite as well, or just a traitor to his class? (As a point of fact, the Roosevelts were maybe the third or fourth or fifth richest family in Hyde Park. Their house was nice, but the Vanderbilts', Ogden-Mills' and Rogers' houses were nicer, if that gives him any street cred.)
willywoody
Why is Edwards a sleaze? Because he's good looking and successful? maybe because he made his millions off the misfortune of others, once "mimicking" the voice of a fetus in court to try and sway the jury. malpractice lawyers don't exude trust. MrRain422
He's a sleaze because he's so transparently hypocritical. He gives these pompous speeches about the plight of the middle class and poor in between his $1200 haircuts. He talks about there being two Americas, and he's going to do everything in his power to keep taxes high for anyone trying to climb their way up to his America. Not to mention his previous career of getting rich from bogus lawsuits against OBGYNs. Why is it hypocritical to be rich and to care about the poor? And do you have any proof that his lawsuits were bogus? If they were bogus, why did a court of law rule in his favor so consistently? Are the courts illegitimate? Or are all lawsuits bogus in your eyes? Do you know the facts behind the cases that he tried or are you just assuming? I'm just wondering.

EL the Famous
"mimicking" the voice of a fetus in court to try and sway the jury. i'd like to hear that. if he used a voice like stewie from family guy, he's got my vote. i was actually matched up w/ Obama in that candidate matcher thing and i was completely invigorated w/ his speech after he won last night. i would really like to see him go on to the white house...aside from hitting all the sweet spots for me on economics and foreign policy, there is just something about him that makes me optimistic that things could really change for the better. MattZ
Why is it hypocritical to be rich and to care about the poor? It's not. But is it hypocritical to rail against two Americas while consulting on a part-time basis in 2005 at Fortress Investment Group for almost $500,000? I am not knocking the guy for making as much money as he can -- we all do it. But he certainly strikes me as a hypocrite.

Or do the people who suffer it just not deserve representation in court? You seem to be painting with a pretty broad stroke. you obviously know little about malpractice cases. sure there are plenty of real cases that deserve representation and retribution. however, there also are many cases that have little merit yet will go to trial as it takes very little evidence to be allowed to trial. once a case goes to trial there's very little chance of a doctor prevailing in the case no matter what the evidence. (if someone has data stating otherwise i'd like to see it. my views are based on talking with professional witmess doctors who have testified for hire in many cases. ) so settlements are usually made and the doctor's malpractice insurance goes up even though he did nothing wrong and worse than that he may be denied licenses in other states or hospital privileges due to the settlement. edwards is known to have represented some dubious cases. internet search and you can find them as i did when he ran last time.
