bjorn_skurj
Graham had one of those....but then he never came back home and he wouldn't return his calls. While Graham kept up with his part of paying rent to the landlord, he was essentially evicted because of the other guy. That really sucked - I had to help him move all his crap. We never knew what became of the guy or his stuff......the day Graham moved out, all of his stuff was still there. That was very restrained of him not to take all of his roommate's stuff and sell it to raise money to pay the rent. Mr. Heartbreak
Add me to the vast pile of people who say "The roommate should pay half per their original agreement, no matter how often they stay there." If an owner of a house agrees to let someone else move in and be their roommate - and the owner, after all, pays the mortgage - then said owner cannot, by definition, be a "freeloader." The roommate should make other arrangements that make more financial sense, such as living somewhere where they will actually pay half the rent or mortgage. This is all kind of a no-brainer, for an objective outsider, anyway.
Guest David Puddy
a former roommate tried to get out of paying half the water bill because i took longer showers than him. here's a better question that the original proposed... say you have a signed agreement to split the monthly cable bill, but your roommate orders somewhere between $30 - $50 worth of porn on demand each month. do you have to split that portion of the cable bill? Duck-Billed Catechist
That was very restrained of him not to take all of his roommate's stuff and sell it to raise money to pay the rent. That's not quite the way it went down. Besides, he locked his door when he was gone.

I say when you split the cable bill, it is only agreed to split the normal bill without extras. All extras have to be payed by the person(s) who ordered it. Same with long distance, it is split by the caller of each calls.

bjorn_skurj
That's not quite the way it went down. Besides, he locked his door when he was gone. "It was the weirdest shit, man. Buncha dudes dressed up like the Spanish Inquisition came over, held a machete to my throat, broke into your room and stole your stuff. Totally not expected. I called the cops, but they said they had so many reports of strongarm Inquisitioner robberies that there wasn't much chance of you getting your stuff back. I did pay your half of the rent this month, though."
yermom
The only roommate I've ever had was good about paying his half but was ultimately asked to leave after I woke up to find him high on God knows what (later he claimed it was too much Benadryl), mumbling, holding a three gallon jug of water up over my sleeping face. Needless to say, I was freaked the hell out.
CommerceComet
Fucking grown up bankers making me pay my mortgage whether I sleep here or not! Fuckers. Yep, I spend a considerable amount of time at my girlfriend's house, but I still have to pay my mortgage. So I say the same should go for renters.
