Jesusetc84
no offense, but I don't like that at all...a best of Wilco with no tracks off my favorite wilco album is like...wow. I'm planning on putting together a double disc set like this for a friend: 01. I Must Be High 02. Casino Queen03. Box Full of Letters04. Passenger Side05. Misunderstood 06. Outtasite (Outtamind)07. Sunken Treasure08. The Lonely 109. California Stars10. Remember The Mountain Bed11. She's a Jar12. A Shot in The Arm13. I'm Always in Love14. Via Chicago15. Remember The Mountain Bed16. Someday Some Morning Some Time 01. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart02. Jesus, Etc;03. Ashes of American Flags04. Heavy Metal Drummer05. Cars Can't Escape06. A Magazine Called Sunset07. At Least That's What You Said08. Wishful Thinking09. Company in My Back10. Theologians11. Poor Places (KT: Live)12. Spiders (Kidsmoke) (KT: Live)13. Impossible Germany14. Walken15. What Light?16. On And On And On This set, I feel, gives a great taste of what each album is about, and what Wilco is about; it shows Wilco as alt country, brian wilson-esque pop, noise makers, and jam banders. Three dollars and 63 cents
I just made this disc for one of my friends who wants to learn more about Wilco. I'm still working on a second disc of all live tracks. She has hard to categorize musical tastes, mostly leaning toward what I'd label as "pop," so I tried to give her songs I think she'd like. I had a few more songs, but they wouldn't fit. ponch1028
you know your friend's musical tastes better than me, so I have no problem. I make different Wilco mixes for different friends, and they are always 2 CD mixes.

Mr. Heartbreak
I've been trying to lash together a single-CD comp for a friend of mine who likes mainly mellow music (Joni Mitchell, classic jazz), and it's really difficult. Guest Jesus Etc
For what it's worth, it might be better to take your friend through a Wilco sampling in reverse. I'm a new fan (since October) and have become an avid fan. I started with Sky Blue Sky and worked my way back to AM. I'm not into country or even alt country at all and if were to have purchased AM first I am sure that would have been my last Wilco CD. Working in reverse allowed me to ease into the country roots and some of those tracks have become my favorites.

radiokills
why not just listen to an album?
tongue-tied
why not just listen to an album? an album might leave someone cold, a mix gives the listener several angles on the band's work. if they find they like certain songs better than others, they can start off with the albums those songs came from. also, a mix cd is a friendly gesture and an exchange of ideas about music. it's very simple to lend them a flashdrive with every Wilco album on it. but that takes the personality out of it, and it's also illegal.
