Who cares about the Olympics? Boycotting them would achieve absolutely nothing no matter how hard the U.S. media would spin the opposite. Boycotting imports would make more sense and even that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

We owe the Chinese a LOT of money. Not wise to piss off your creditors.

You said a mouthful there man.

I personally wish they would just do away with the Olympics altogether. I enjoy watching 'em but...

the only ones a boycott will hurt are american athletes who have been training for years. I think it would be little hypocritical to boycott China's olympics when, as Bjorn points out, we have no problem bumming money off them, or buying tons and tons of crappy products from them...

Well, the next few weeks and months should be interesting. Protest groups in Tibet, and maybe Taiwan, and gonna milk this for all they can. They want the world to see what a bunch of facsist hardliners the Chinese gov't are, while we ingest the grand Beijingoism show that the olympics will be.

I like the winter Olympics much better anyway. I also think that the games will focus a lot of attention on China - both the good and the bad kind.

I guess the other factor in a boycott would be the hypocrisy of the west, since we invaded Iraq only 5 years ago on a set of false pretenses, and we're still there administering the civil war we created. I know the US population supported the invasion (just barely), but the vast majority of people in European countries were opposed to their government's position on it.

Jesse Owens winning gold in Berlin was far more effective than Carter's boycot in Moscow. Be there and see just how far you can push free speech until they kick you out.

Just don't push it too far against your own country.... :shifty

I believe they finally reinstated their gold medals. But yeah, I remember that.

I don't remember this so can you tell me what happened please?

'68 Olympics in Mexico city. The US places 1-2 in some track and field event, and these two guys do the black power salute instead of hand over heart for the national anthem. The USOC strips them of their medals.

I personally would prefer if top athletes started pulling out based on their own political views. Asaba and Gatland would be a massive blow if they weren't to show up and if the big U-23 football players didn't go it would also be a massive blow but a country should never force it's athletes not to compete
