jff
I have tried to get into the early Bee Gees stuff, but so far it hasn't happened. I think I have most of their early material in my collection, but most of it is on bad or worn out pressings. The poor sound quality could be a hindrance. I bought this for $1 this weekend: Bee Gees: "Two Years On" from 1970 (Sorry I couldn't find a better image)I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I'm hoping to like it. cryptique
if any of you non-bee gees lovers want me to show you what you're missing out on with a mix of their best stuff (it'll be pre-disco, cos i'm not too keen on them from then on), then let me know. i still can't believe why they aren't as well known amongst you lot.My parents had a copy of the first Best Of The Bee Gees compilation (1969), which I listened to a few times before the whole disco thing happened. There's some great stuff on there. They were a terrific group up until they start squeaking. And even then, as much as I hate the stuff, I have to admit it's well-crafted. I would love to hear your mix, because I don't currently have any of their stuff. My band used to cover "I Started A Joke" and maybe one other BGs tune. To answer your inital question, though -- I just fucking love the Kinks, way more than either the Beach Boys or the Bee Gees. Way more than most bands.

Don't know what it is, but I like them way more than any of their contemporaries.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
I'd listen to such a mix. I only know the disco stuff, which I hate. Hell...I can name 25 songs that are worthy of anybody's playlist: HolidayNew York Mining Disaster 1941To Love SomebodyEvery Christian Lion-Hearted Man Will Show YouMassachusettsWordsI Started a JokeI've Gotta Get a Message to YouYou'll Never See My Face AgainLonely DaysHow Can You Mend a Broken Heart?Run to MeNights on BroadwayJive Talkin'You Should Be DancingStayin' AliveHow Deep Is Your LoveNight FeverMore Than a WomanSpirits (Having Flown)Too Much HeavenTragedyYou Win AgainE.S.PStill Waters Run Deep It is truly a shame that they are associated with the Disco movement. At worst, their late 70's period is Heavy R&B. Well written songs with incredible harmonies and hooks...legitimately one of the best bands of all time.

Synthesizer Patel
Right, I rushed this a bit, but it's good enough for people to get a feel of their sound pre-disco. I avoided all the big hits; not that I don't like them, more that I assume everyone has heard them, and if not then this'll make you go out and find them anyway. Also half this is remastered (they are slowly remastering all their back catalogue in order, but have only finished the first 3 so far) so the sound quality differs a bit - you can certainly hear how much better their arrangements sound with the remastering process. 01 I.O.I.O02 Turn Of The Century03 Marley Purt Drive04 Come Home Johnny Bridie05 Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You06 Kitty Can07 Lion In Winter08 Man For All Seasons09 Earnest Of Being George10 South Dakota Morning11 Portrait Of Louise12 Lay It On Me13 Barker Of The U.F.O.14 Somebody Stop The Music15 When The Swallows Fly16 Close Another Door And here is the megaupload link Hope you all enjoy it. sgtpepper64
Great question. These are three of my favorite bands and any Bee Gee's hating is too bad. They are a fantastic band. Bee Gees: Run To Me/The Singer Sang His Song Beach Boys: Wouldn't it be nice (vocals only version)/You Still Believe in Me Kinks: Victoria/Apeman
NightOfJoy
I forgot about Jive Talkin'..........that was a cool tune. I do kinda like that 70s whitebread R&B thing that was going on back then-hell, I'll even throw KC and the Sunshine's bighit album on every once in a while. Maybe I should rethink my scorn on the BGs.....
Sweet Papa Crimbo
Cor! SNF ruined the view of them here. I well and fully understand that SFN killed the BeeGees for a lot of folks. I feel the music stands for itself. (By the way, there is a LOT of interesting stuff in their catalogue. Rock, Folk, R&B, Psychadelia (sp). They are SORELY underestimated in some circles. radiocures
wow! any random ten seconds off Odessa, Robin's Reign or Cucumber Castle is better than the entire Kinks discography, sorry

cryptique
wow! any random ten seconds off Odessa, Robin's Reign or Cucumber Castle is better than the entire Kinks discography, sorryI'm just going to have to vehemently disagree with you on that. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not in the Bee Gees hater camp, especially with their early stuff -- but the Kinks' catalog completely owns that of the Bee Gees.
