I saw Metallica in '86. I saw GNR in '87. The Black Crowes in 1990. Soul Asylum in '91 (which was actually fairly far along in their career, but before they went platinum.) I saw Green Day in '92, Public Enemy the same year. I saw the Smashing Pumpkins in a club in '93 I think. I saw Son Volt on the Trace tour. I saw Fugazi several times in the early 90's in small clubs. Living in Louisville I saw Freakwater, Rodan, Crain, Will Oldham (Palace, Bonnie Prince Billy) very early on and often. I'm pretty sure I was at a show or two where one of Jim James of MMJ early bands played. I saw Dr. Dog open for MMJ in 2004. I don't know how many of those are noteworthy or not, but that's what I got for now.

some older artists that i've seen recently:

bob dylan

roger waters

john fogerty

eric burdon

rolling stones

ray davies

I seen Roger. Also saw Pink Floyd back in 1988 or 89 or whatever it was... sans Roger.

Roger solo was better than that faux Floyd.

Also saw Stevie Ray Vaughan at Alpine Valley, WI. The night before he died. So, his penultimate performace, not his last.

(I love that word: "penultimate"!)

Of the original list I saw REM in '83 at Irvine Auditorium at Penn. Let's Active opened. I also saw Miles Davis around '81. Far from his legendary period. I didn't see U2 until '84, saw them twice that year, they did a mini-tour of theaters (saw them at the Tower) and then a full tour of arenas (Spectrum).

My first concert was Elvis Costello in April of '79 on the Armed Forces tour. Saw Zappa not long after that.

I saw the original Replacements lineup at Houston Hall at Penn on the Tim tour. Saw them twice again later after Bob Stinson was fired (and died).

Saw Husker Du and the Minutemen (2 different shows)in '85 at a venue in Philly ("The Opera House") that I'd swear was an abandoned warehouse. Billy Bragg was supposed to open for the Minutemen but the rumor was he'd been deported that afternoon.

Also in the '83-ish timeframe I saw The Clash on the Combat Rock tour, Roxy Music on the Avalon tour and the Gang of Four on the Songs of the Free tour.

My brother, who is 12 years my senior saw the Beatles at Washington Satidium (now RFK) in '66 and Hendrix in Baltimore in '69 or '70.

Oh yea, I saw Elvis on this tour also. I completely forgot, at the dreadful Aragon in Uptown.

I guess since we seem to have strayed from the original parameters, I'll go ahead and say I saw two "legends" in what i would call past their prime: The Stones in '81 and The Who in '82. Of course I did mention Miles earlier and he was WAY past his prime in '88.

Small world... I have a xerox flyer for the Minutemen show at The Opera House (I think it lists Billy Bragg and Wreckless Eric as the support acts) that I picked up off the floor at the Tower Theater following an X concert in 1985.

My first -- and only -- show at the Aragon was Nazareth back in '77. What a dark, dank place that was.

Very small. I was at that X show.

If Wreckless Eric was on the bill with the Minutemen, I don't remember him. D. Boon was killed about 2 months later.

A pretty mediocre recording of the show is available... http://www.archive.org/details/minutemen1985-10-22.flac16

This is more like the inverse of your question.

I had tickets to see the Dead in June of 1995. I got really sick and skipped it. Less than 2 months later, Jerry died. Never got to see them. :(

If it's any consolation, Garcia was in very poor health and most of the shows towards the end were really quite weak/lame. I gave away tix to the second night at the Meadowlands after the first night show that June it was so depressing.

& did see REM with the Feelies opening, probably in 1984? and a few other times during their mid-1980s heydey before they started sucking beyond description

The Feelies opened for REM on the fall 1986 tour.

I saw the show at the Felt Forum in NYC.

Also, not sure if it counts but:

Pixies 1989 at The Blue Note: Columbia, MO.

Probably not legendary enough?

I think I told this story in another thread but I saw the Pixies in the summer of 1987 before they were signed. It was reportedly the show that Ivo (from 4AD) saw them and signed them right after.

Fer sure....

Do all the old blues guys I saw count? Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, Hounddog Taylor, Willie Dixon, etc.

Or the jazz guys?? Sonny Rollins, Raahsan Roland Kirk, Oscar Petterson, Keith Jarrett, etc.

Thanks that really does help. That probably would have left a bad taste in my mouth.

pretty cool stuff ... i remember penn having some amazing shows back then but i never made it to any of 'em - don't think they really promoted them off campus. now they have world cafe and they still have tons of great bands playing on campus.

hey, where was that opera house? i don't remember that venue

It was at 3rd and Brown. Diagonally across from where N. 3rd is now. The building is still there but like much of that neighborhood it looks like it's been fixed up. I don't remember any other shows occurring there besides the two I saw but then that was 23 years ago so my memory may not be perfect! As I said it really felt like an abandoned building that was being "squatted" as a music venue. It was so hot in there for the Husker Du show that paint chips were peeling off the ceiling and falling on the crowd. The Minutemen show was incredible. 41 songs in 75 minutes, everybody; the band, the crowd, the (limited) staff, was exhausted after that one.

I had multiple friends at Penn so I managed to get to a bunch of those shows. I also saw Shriekback at Houston Hall and The Bangles w/ the Hoodoo Gurus at Irvine Auditorium. They used to do these big "Spring Fling" shows. The only one I went to was a bizarre Hodge-Podge of acts (Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Divinyls, and the Psychedelic Furs) at the Civic Center in '83.
