uncool2pillow
80/35 Festival here in Des Moines... Flaming Lips, The Roots, Andrew Bird, Jakob Dylan, Drive By Truckers, Yonder Mountain String Band, Black Francis, aaaand some other people.I'm glad to hear about people going. Some good bands, but I can't justify the ticket price and the time away from kids on a holiday weekend. Enjoy! Let's hope it's successful enough to continue and to grow. sweetheart-mine
corked does not always mean good. Actually, there are some amazing non-corked wines being made these days.this is true! tonight i'm drinking a bit of red wine out of a newfangled box. it's shiraz, and in this smaller box it is really not bad. of course, they're making the smaller boxes look friggin fancy compared to the old big ones, so maybe i'm a sucker. i don't think so but will confirm tomorrow. p.s. this red sox fan is not feeling good heading to the bronx after a sweep in tampa bay that got uglier by the night. never mind, though, talk amongst yourselves, we're used to it from the olden days. I'll admit it - I'm a fan of the Wine Cube from Target. The holiday weekend is blessedly unplanned. Just spending the three days hanging out at home with the spouse and kiddo. And maybe a Wine Cube. RaspberryJam
We are going up to Maine to spend the weekend with the in-laws. We will all drink too much so that we can stand each other, have fox news on in the background ALL DAY, and listen to my sister in law ask me a hundred times if I think she is fat. My husband is taking off to play golf all day on Saturday, so I am on lifeguard duty, since apparently, no one thinks I mind watching all 8 children at the pool. Not to mention that my 2 are the only ones who can swim. Can't wait!

I'd say your husband owes you big-time after abandoning you all day in that scenario. But ewwww, Fox news all day? Now that is torture!

Enjoy your weekend.

Believe me, if I thought that would work, I would've done it years ago. Unfortunately, I know it would only open up questions like, "Which part of me do you think is the fattest?" The worst part is that she isn't even remotely overweight, just has an annoying combination of body dysmorphia and personality disorder. I, on the other hand, know EXACTLY how overweight I am. I didn't say anything about a box! There are some higher end wines being bottled without corks these days. Stay away from the boxes IMO.
cryptique
Stay away from the boxes IMO.I wish I could find the link, but I read something recently that suggested that boxes are actually a good way to sell wine, because the collapsing bag protects the wine from oxygen and preserves the flavor, keeping it fresh longer. That said, I haven't personally seen any decent wine sold in boxes yet -- but I also haven't been looking. If I see a respectable shiraz in a box someday, I won't necessarily be deterred by the packaging. In general, though, I would prefer my wine from a corked glass bottle. I'm old-fashioned that way. Wendy
Sadly, inexpensive wine gives me a wicked headache within a few hours. I can't drink it anymore. The finer quality the wine, though, that headache never appears at all. I'm happiest with a Sauvignon Blanc if it has the grapefruit finish. Love the Australian varities. But mostly I just drink water. I pretty much love water, especially sparkling water with some lemon.

That's definitely true with white wines but with red methinks you can go cheap if you know what to get. Tempranillo is a Spanish grape that tastes good to me no matter how cheap the bottle is. When I was in Spain, it was great to get bottles that cost $12+ here and cost 1.25 euros over there. Now that's good cheap wine.
cryptique
At this point, I'm just hoping we have electricity for the holiday. They just bumped their "estimate" of when power would be restored to 11:30 PM tonight.
sweetheart-mine
so we had an unexpected long-lost friend show up yesterday, the two small-box shirazes i'd bought for this weekend are gone, and i can't remember what the brands were -- and it isn't even july 4 yet. i think one was "black box." it really wasn't bad but i'll have to experiment. the big boxes are ghastly; so far the small in general seem a cut above. what cryptique said: yes, they say the bag in the boxes keeps the wine better over the long term. too bad i won't find that out about the two we bought yesterday! also, i've read (from the companies themselves) that bottles are expensive packaging, and the box is much less so, so the wine can be sold more cheaply. and that seems to be true, at least from the quick price comparison i did beween fish-eye shiraz in a bottle and fish-eye shiraz in the little fish-eye box. wow i'm tired. maybe, if i'm going to pass along boxed-wine information, it should be on another day so there's a chance i know what i'm talking about. best wishes for a good weekend to all. bjorn_skurj
Target cannot sell wine in the Empire State, but I am not too proud (or too rich) to drink box wine.

Now back to the wine bottle v. box topic. Btw, we sell a Sauvignon Blanc (in a BOTTLE) by Monkey Bay that is suppose to be quite nice
Beltmann
Yesterday we took the daughter to see WALL-E. Started today with the city parade and park activities, such as a bounce house, free root beer floats, a duck derby, live music, etc. This afternoon we're hosting a family gathering for ice cream sundaes, then walking two blocks to see the city fireworks. Tomorrow, a major family reunion on the lake.
