jakobnicholas
I kid you not, I grabbed a stack of cd's to listen to today, and The Bends was one of them. Damn I'm good! Is it too cynical to wonder if elections are simply who has the most money? A local talk show this morning was saying how, for example, the Demcrat party just sent 4 million dollars a week ago to Minnesota to help Franken get a victory. Same goes to fight against Elizabeth Dole. Of course, Obama has out-spent McCain like 6 or 7 to 1....Obama has spent more than Kerry and Bush COMBINED in 2004. I'm really not trying to be sour grapes. Obama's demeanor and message of hope is aboslutely perfect timing after what the country's gone through recently, but seriously....how does McCain even have a chance when the cash flow on the Democrat ticket is so enourmous? They can spend it on whichever races they want. Also, the grassroots nature of Obama's fundraising (record number of individual donors) = people voting with their pocketbooks. I'd be fine with 100% publicly financed elections.
Mrs. Peel
This says 100% of registered voters cast ballots. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/04/dix...otch/index.html So there are either an abnormal amount of children or most people don't register.
jakobnicholas
Well, the RNC has more money than the DNC. They can spend it on whichever races they want. How then, does Obama outspend McCain 7-1 if the RNC has more money?
Duck-Billed Catechist
Do elaborate. How then, does Obama outspend McCain 7-1 if the RNC has more money?RNC is not the same as the McCain campaign. RNC/DNC money is more "soft" -- and its spending can't be directly coordinated with the presidential campaigns. Obama's lead on McCain in fundraising eclipses the RNC's lead on the DNC. For instance, the DNC + Obama spent 134 million in September, while the RNC + McCain spent 108 million. My point is that if the RNC wanted to pour money into a Senate race, they are more than able to.
PigSooie
So there are either an abnormal amount of children or most people don't register. Don't forget felons. I bet Dixville Notch is full of them.
EL the Famous
It feels so different to have voted for someone instead of just against someone. amen to that, brother. the last two elections really did a number on both my confidence and interest in our political system. i felt a little beat down and definitely way more pessimistic. if anything, Obama recharged my optimism...maybe not so much in the actual political system, but the american people themselves. that said, as long as you cast an educated ballot and voted w/ the clearest conscience possible, god bless. may the best (black) man win. quarter23cd
how does McCain even have a chance when the cash flow on the Democrat ticket is so enourmous?I agree with you about the money thing. If I'm remembering correctly, I think but in past elections didn't Bush have a significant money advantage, too? There's something to be said for "he with the dough, wins". The reason for the influx of Obama cash is that there are a crapload of motivated people on this side of things. I've never donated to a political campaign before, but made a few smallish contributions to Obama...and I'm assuming there are a lot of people like me, which adds up to a lot. Money, in and of itself, doesn't win elections. But it helps.
Mrs. Peel
I forgot to mention, this morning, when we asked about getting stickers to show that we had voted, we were told they had to get rid of them because the students at the school had been sticking them all over the place yesterday. While I laughed at first, as I drove to work I started to question why the elementary school students had access to ANY voting materials the day before the election. As much as I try not to be a conspiracy theorist, after seeing those 9 bags of paper strewn along the side of a Florida road, I find myself wondering how many of those cute little bubbles may have been filled in and what may have been fed into that cool machine that magically makes paper disappear.Hopefully Andrew Sullivan will think this is noteworthy and launch a formal investigation. MattZ
from talkingpointsmemo.com: Hoax Email Tells Virginia Students To Vote TomorrowBy Zachary Roth - November 4, 2008, 10:23AMHackers broke into the email account of the George Mason University provost in Virginia, early this morning and sent out the following email: Subject: Election Day Update To the Mason Community: Please note that election day has been moved to November 5th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Peter N. StearnsProvost According to Dan Walsh, a spokesman for the university, the hoax message went to the entire student body -- more than 30,000 students -- and about 5000 faculty and staff. Stearns himself quickly sent out a followup message assuring recipients that it was a hoax, which was being investigated. Walsh said the university had contacted campus police, who are working with outside law enforcement to look into the hoax.
