No Electricity, No Heat - New England

Recommended Posts

So how are those affected holding up?!?

I heard 280,000 people are without in New Hampshire.

In Massachusestts, the town I live, the one I work and the one where my children spend their weekends are all going to be out for at least 2-4 days. CraZZZy!!! I stayed at my house overnight because I THOUGHT I had heat. Turns out...I didn't. So now I'm spending the next couple of days at my Mom's and waiting to hear when I should expect to be back at work. It seems as though mostly the rural areas were affected due to the heavy tree branches being the problem. Last night, while I was alone in the dark I kept hearing all the trees breaking and everything falling. It was SOOO creepy...kind of like random fireworks going off right outside my windows.

My Mom lives in Worcester and my best friend in Boston and to them, it's like NOTHING at all has happened. (So no worries for Jeff and the boys nor those traveling this way tomorrow.)

I do have some incredible yet sad pictures to upload but not the capability at the moment. When I get back home I'll share. Hope everyone affected by this is doing okay!

:hug

P.S. After I took one of my pictures during my "escape" I looked up and there was a huge cable on top of my van! It must've fell while I was trying to capture the shot! Good Lord!!!

Yikes, you poor folks! I wish you a warm crackling fire and some lovely cups of hot buttered rum! Stay safe and as warm as possible, and may Thor (or whoever the god of modern heating and light is) quickly restore these to your lives! :cheekkiss

My parents called me asking if I was alright (I'm in Boston), I had no idea what they were talking about. Worcester seems to have got it pretty bad, but seeing how tonight's concert at the DCU Center wasn't canceled, tomorrow's won't be. :D

But for those who are without heat or electricity, I send vibes.

We got hit pretty hard with snow--about 10 inches by the time all was said and done--but thankfully there was no ice and we still have power and heat. Unfortunately I couldn't go to Philly today, but that's the way things go sometimes. I know it could be a lot worse.

Vibes to everybody who's been affected by the storm.

Loretta - The girls are set up in some lovely hotel suite somewhere w/ their father, stepmother and the rest of the clan *sigh*

Wayne- You proved exactly what I was talking about.

Guy in NY - don't know your name...I had NO IDEA it snowed anywhere in the Northeast!

Yvon - Thank you!

And oh my Lord Thor...if it was the version that Vincent D'Onofrio played in 'Adventures in Babysitting'. I'll take JUST him that should provide plenty of heat and electricity ;)

Holy crap, I watched that movie a million times when I was a kid and developed a huge crush on Vincent later when I saw The Whole Wide World but until now, I've never realized he was Thor. :omg

The sound of branches breaking from the weight of the ice is spooky.

About 6 years ago we had a really bad ice storm and since we had a newborn and no heat we went and stayed with my parents. I remember sitting in the living room with my dad listening to the branches cracking and breaking. I get chills thinking of it.

Vibes to everyone without heat and power. I hope everything is restored soon!

I obviously need to see this movie.
You really don't need to see Adventures in Babysitting. It's pretty mediocre. And I only watched The Whole Wide World once and the only thing I remember being taken with was D'Onofiro's beefiness. :blush

The cities of Troy and Albany are without power also.

Ouch. Looting?

Well, then, you need to recommend me a meritorious movie which also has an admirable beefiness quotient. :thumbup

Christy, the icy, weighted-down branches creaking does sound creepy! Not to mention dangerous. Mt. Bed was describing a storm he went through last year that had tree branches snapping, and it was scary to even listen to him describing it. Be safe, everyone! I wish I could package up some of this ridiculously out-of-season sunlight we're seeing in So. CA right now, and send it eastward.

I hope you all have fireplaces and big snuggly down comforters to hunker down under.

Tracy did not say - I figure it went down though.

There are some rough parts of those cities, not to mention about 10,000 drunken college students.

Damn, I'm sorry Maggie. :cheekkiss I know you were looking forward to Philly.

Give Tracy our best, man. :thumbup

I couldn't believe how quickly the storm cleared out of here yesterday morning and moved upstate. At one point, the entire weather map for our area was dark blue for snow and pink for wintry mix, and the next time I checked it was completely clear and the storm was nearly to Albany.

I don't mind snowstorms too much--they're difficult if you're trying to travel, but mostly you just stay home and wait for the snow to stop. Ice storms are completely different beasts, though, because of how often they cause power outages. I've been lucky that I haven't had to go through that yet, even though we've had a few bad ice storms in the year I've lived up here.

Kansas City is plagued with ice storms. Generally we have a couple both in the spring and winter. Snow, not so much. The description of the trees cracking and breaking is chilling, made moreso by the silence and darkness of the city when the power is out. Add to that the blue explosions of electrical transformers and it's a pretty scary scene. A tree fell on my house in the last big storm, while Sarah and I huddled in bed together.

Love and vibes to all of you folks northeast. Especially to viatroy, though I know she's snuggled up with a good book in front of the wood stove. :wub

Three of my favorite people in the whole wide world. Wish I was taking the Troy to Portland roadtrip today. (I hope Bad Kitty has a warm spot!)

Timmy: Chris, will you unsnap my pants? I have to pee.

M. (hris: OK.

Timmy: (from the bathroom) Chris, will you come help me get up on the potty?

viatroy (rolling her eyes): Now he wants you as his handmaiden.

M. (hris: :lol

For us, 'Adventures in Babysitting' was a cult classic. You should see it at least ONCE! :D

Maggie from CT - I am sorry that I referred to you as a guy. I'm a dolt! Many pardons...

Although the Neil Young/Wilco concert is still on, there are some limited parts of the city without power but that area is COMPLETELY fine. No trees you see, which is the main problem.

As for our small towns, I heard this morning from National Grid we are looking at NO EARLIER than Monday...*sigh* Guesss I'll be bringing the kiddos back here tomorrow afternoon.

On the bright side, I have heard of no injuries nor loss of life. So that is a good thing, obviously.

A couple of years ago, here I live, we had an ice storm and some people did not have power for a month or so. I have only experienced that once - summer before last. Although, back in the early 90s (I can never recall what year), we had a week long blizzard - and there was talk that the power company was going to do a rolling blackout deal - due to the strain on the system.
