Guest Jules
I think the real douche bags are the people making such a big deal of this whole ordeal. He is 23 years old. Just because he is a great swimmer does not make up for the fact that he is still just a kid, and wants to have fun. I understand the fact that he has a responsibility to his fans, but if they are true fans, they will see him not as an iconic figure, but as a human being, a 23 year old human being, who probably drinks, smokes the occasional bowl, and works his ass off in the swimming pool. IYou're right, the weed is not a big deal, but if he had half a brain in the first place, he would smoke the weed in his own fucking house, with no cameras around. Is anyone watching over this guy? Fuck the "fans" (are there really swimming fans anyway?). He has a responsibility to his sponsors, but moreso to himself, to not fuck up the $100million in endorsements. Get the money first, then do all the drugs you want.

lamradio
The rumor around here today is that it was $150k and the pic was taken/submitted by a female. Must be the daughter of my dads friend.. He must have broken her heart. Damn I'm good.

Same deal with any of the sport stars who have fucked up their lives. Michael Vick, etc... The simple fact is that some people are just dumb asses.

I am sure everybody has inhaled the deadly smoke of marijuana, and Michael Phelps should be able to have fun, get away for a little while, without having everyone breaking his back. That said, he is an idiot for doing it where there were cameras around, but if people think this was his first time smoking marijuana they are in denial. Humans make mistakes, his mistake however was not smoking marijuana, but smoking marijuana with cameras around. He should be able to do whatever the hell he wants. I read a frustrating article in USA Today that had lines such as "This is a sad day for Phelps, and a sadder day for the millions of parents and young athletes who planned their lives around his races last August" "Perhaps there wont be any (repercussions) at all, although we can only imagine the reaction in Battle Creek, Mich., where no advertising executive ever envisioned pairing Corn Flakes with Pot""...another apology. You want to believe him, of course, because he is Michael Phelps. But, sadly, now, you do have to wonder." Can we get anymore melodramatic?? Planned their lives around his races??? You mean watched them? When do we draw the line...is this really a problem of Phelps, or a problem with Marijuana, or is it really a problem of society? I am rambling, I just get pissed at the dramatic people like the writer in USA Today, he smoked some weed, big fucking deal, he still works his ass off and swims great, isn't that enough for a swimmer?Dude, as a journalist, I can tell you from start to finish this is all shit journalists make up. I doubt there are more than three people in the universe who are really hurt by this, and that includes Phelps and his mom.

Hasn't anyone in Battle Creek, MI heard of the munchies?Sorry, that's the conservative side of MI. /represent While I have no problem with someone rocking the bong, it does send a message to people who look up to Phelps. There are responsibilities, man. Actions have consequences, and this time the consequences are in dollars, in the negative range. Other consequences include disappointment from fans. I know this happened after he really achieved his fame, but it saddens me that this is what people get worked up about and the DUI is /was hardly a blip... and I don't even smoke. Mrs. Peel
Off topic for a moment....can someone explain to me how a hookah pipe works? I'm serious. We've had several discussions about this in our house and no one can definitively explain how it works. Why does the water bubble when you inhale when there isn't anything heating it? I can see that it might bubble if you're exhaling into the pipe and the stem goes down into the water, but how does it bubble when you're inhaling? Also, I know the water is acting like a filter, but in the pipes I've seen nothing actually sucks the smoke down into the water. (I have never smoked, BTW.)
