calvino
My brother and I grabbed 3rd row tickets for his show next month at UIC. It will be about 5 years to the date of the upcoming show since I saw him last. UIC is not the best place for a show --- but hopefully being that close that sound of the venue won't hinder it, too much. Just re-watched that above "Can't Wait" --- hopefully he is still playing that rendition.

If you care about being able to see Bob, third is about as close as you want to get, depending on how high the stage is. If you get too close (first or second row) you won't be able to see him when he's on the piano, which was the case for a lot of people who bought $400 VIP tickets when I saw him a few years ago. Meanwhile I was sitting back in row 4 with one of the best views in the place. All the sound was coming directly from the speakers on each side of the stage so it sounded great. calvino
Start of the tour last night --- a lot of new tunes off his latest, which is cool. New drummer and guitar player. Just decided to make a family trip to Columbus, Ohio to catch a show this Saturday. Interestingly - I will be seeing another X-Pensive Wino -- Charley Drayton, saw Steve Jordan last week with the Stones. The Expecting Rain site needs to learn how to spell Drayton's first name. Analogman
Charlie Sexton is now playing with Elvis Costello.
calvino
Yeah I heard about Sexton playing with Costello --- definitely will be missed. Will see how the replacement is. Never heard of Doug Lancio. I just saw that he is on some John Hiatt records that I have - didn't recognize the name. Bob Britt was playing with him in 2019 -- I enjoyed his playing when I saw the show in Chicago. Edited November 3, 2021 by calvino
nalafej
Dylan and Elvis (and Sexton) are in Chicago tonight. Good for Bob for playing 8 of 10 new songs, but that doesn't look like a super enjoyable set if the new album isn't your thing...

The latest recored never jumped out at me, I have only listened to it a handful of times, but I glad he is playing 8 of the tunes --- probably would have skipped this tour if he only played 1 or 2. I am curious to see if he keeps playing all 8. While looking for restaurants near the theater, I saw that a place called Ringside Cafe is right around the corner -- opened since 1897. Need to see I can spot a guy with a grey hoodie soaking up the boxing motif ambiance while enjoying a burger and a beer....
calvino
Wow - the thread has been dead since 21 ---- will be catching two shows in April in Indiana --- the A Complete Unknown movie really put the Dylan bug in my kid and he will be my traveling companion for the shows. Normally, the whole family comes along with me on my Dylan excursions and they do their own thing, while I go to the shows --- it's gonna be nice having him at the shows.
jw harding
I saw Dylan in 2023 after taking about a 15 year break from seeing him. I'm in the camp of not being a fan of his current arrangements and phrasing on older songs, and after that show still feel the same. But Rough and Rowdy Ways is incredible, and those songs really suit his current sound. The new material really blew me away. Going to catch him again at the Outlaw Tour in May, and know that it was more of a mix of newer and older stuff on the last Outlaw tour, but amazing to see him still mixing it up to such an extent.
calvino
I caught an Outlaw show when it passed through Tinley Park last summer. Decent show. I was on the lawn, so the sound was pretty crappy. Was one of the more interesting setlist that I saw him play. It was nice seeing Jim Keltner play drums. Stella Blue was a treat. I also think the Rough and Rowdy Ways tunes work real well in a live setting, also. Tinley Park, Illinois Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre September 7, 2024 1. Silvio (Bob on piano) 2. It Ain't Me, Babe (Bob on piano and harp) 3. Love Sick (Bob on piano) 4. Little Queenie (Bob on piano) (song by Chuck Berry) 5. Under The Red Sky (Bob on piano and harp) 9. Things Have Changed (Bob on piano) 10. Stella Blue (Bob on piano) 11. Six Days On The Road (Bob on piano) (song by Earl Green and Carl Montgomery) 12. TCP
I basically spent most of 2016/17 listening to Dylan and then haven't listened to much since. But A Complete Unknown also put me in a Dylan mood and I've been listening to basically nothing but Dylan since Boxing Day. Discovered this performance a few weeks ago which just got an official upload from the Letterman account: It's so good. Punk Dylan! The wrong harmonica! I love everything about it. I can't believe it didn't make Springtime in New York (though another performance that night did). I've decided to prioritize seeing Bob live again, as I've only seen him once in 2017. He'll be 84 in May and the fact that he's still touring is amazing. I've bought tickets to see him in some place called Mankato, MN. Let's hope Canadian and US relations haven't completely disintegrated by then 🙄

Nice to see another 80 year old up there with Bob. Dylan has changed drummers a few times since George left, hope he sticks with Keltner for some stability going forward. But I'm sure Keltner has lots of options and will only do it as long as he wants to.
chuckrh
To quote an old Merle Haggard joke (heard when he opened for Dylan): We''re so old we've got an ambulance to follow the tour bus.
