Why do you come to VC?

I have a pretty out-of-the-blue question for the crowd that isn't related to any sort of class or assignment or anything like that; I'm actually trying to guide my own thoughts and this is kind of a favor. And who doesn't like talking about him/herself? It's a LOT of questions and you don't need to answer all of them, but you'll probably catch the theme.

Why do you come to VC regularly? What do you get out of coming here? How did you get into VC? Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks? How would you define being a Wilco fan? If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around? Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)? Do you consider some fellow VCers friends? Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends? What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around? Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

The reason why the 'question' is so vague, and why I'm not providing my own response (yet), is because I really don't want to shape the answers in anyway - I want to know how you define your membership.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm having a big brain fart and I really hope that hearing your responses can help me out a bit.

I'll bite.

I've been coming here regularly for almost 5 years, although I've only really posted anything for 2 of them. I can't even remember why I joined in the first place other than a love for Wilco and perhaps to download some live shows on the now-defunct tracker.

I only visit two boards, this and a Texas Longhorns blog with a pretty active community. Both appeal to me because the average user seems to be of high intelligence who dispenses sage opinions and/or advice in well-thought-out arguments. (By the way, the Texas blog seems to be populated by a lot of lawyers who are able to put together lengthy posts detailing everything from BCS alternatives to game breakdowns.)

It would be nice to get to know some fellow VCers outside of the forum because I'm sure we would all get along great, but I've only briefly met a few. Of course, I doubt anyone is ever thinking, "Man, I would like to meet bleedorange." :lol

I come here because I look forward to any Wilco news I can get, which always shows up here first. I love to argue about pretty much anything and ranking songs, albums, tv shows, movies, books, etc., is right in my wheelhouse as far as fun things to do. I like to get opinions on the latest non-Wilco releases that are worth hearing, and I love to see whatever else the like-minded people on here are talking about (although, I have sworn off all political threads -- my thoughts are too far to the right for most of this board, which is to say they are close to the center ;) ).

I don't think there's anything specific about me that makes me more inclined to come here. It's a way to take a break from work during the day and I enjoy visiting at night when I'm doing something at the computer. Which is to say that I don't crave coming here or go through withdrawals, it's just something I enjoy.

And my interest in Wilco has not waned even with the release of Sky Blue Sky, which has turned out to be my least favorite album of theirs. I'm very much looking forward to the live DVD and the new album.

23/m/IA/down to party!

Why do you come to VC regularly?

To get the latest updates on Pat's facial hair, mostly. And for beer recommendations. And to find out what Kyle is listening to. It's a place to shoot the shit w/ a lot of like minded people.

What do you get out of coming here?

Laid, one of these days, I would hope. I've learned about all kinds of music/beer/bodily functions I would be otherwise unaware of. Plus going back through 10 pages of a RTT and seeing how the people who have more freedom to fuck around at work spend their days is always entertaining.

How did you get into VC?

I don't remember how I first found the board, but I registered and then disappeared for a long time. I originally came back after the last Des Moines show to find out if bb

I joined this board about 3 years and a month or two ago, after lurking for awhile. At the time I joined I was in a pretty 'rabid fan' phase - now it's a part of my regular interwebs routine, like checking the emails, etc...I just log on, almost unconciously.

What I get out of the board runs a pretty large spectrum - there are a number of folks that regularly give me HUGE laughs, some that give me insight and a different perspective than my own, and, on occasion, some that actually steer me away from my Dead-related obsessions into new music. :lol

I blame our friend Basil II for getting me here. I was trading shows with him and he sorta brought me to this place. Thanks, Robert :cheekkiss . Thanks for causing me to waste a ridiculous amount of time on this shitty computer.

I would consider myself a pretty big fan of the band, even though I don't 'follow' them on tour like some folks here, or obsess on getting every show on disc. When something really important happens it usually finds its way to me. My interest isn't as great as it was a couple of years ago but that's not unusual - I still love 'em but it certainly isn't on the level of my life-long sickness with the Dead. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :stunned

I do post on other boards, but this place really is unique. The quality of people here seems to be of a very high caliber (not you, Ben :lol ) and I really feel more at home here than just about anywhere else. I've met a couple of dozen VC folks, and consider them friends. There's also many other people here I've never met, but I like as well as any of my 'real life' friends - hopefully someday I'll get to meet them in person. You all KNOW who you are.

Like I said, there is a real community of cool, loving people here that just blows my mind - for example, this one girl, out of the goodness of her heart, recently sent me a batch of fine Wilco DVDs - for no other reason than she is a real sweetheart and likes to share the music and the love. So thanks again, girl who shall remain nameless because I'd hate to embarrass her! :lol

In closing, I guess I'm here a lot now for the fact that my kids are all grown up and I actually have some time to myself - thank God!

Nice thread topic, speed racer! :cheers

I joined VC in 2002 (I think); I've been through a couple of board crashes and had at least three user names (nothing than MS since we were allowed to change our names)...

I initially joined for the live show trees - back when I was really into trading live shows (now everything's available for download). I didn't even visit the forums back then, just signed up for the trees. These days I rarely set foot out of the "Someone Else's Song" forum unless it's for the LOST thread. My interest in Wilco hasn't waned, per se (though I wasn't overly impressed with the last album) but I never visit the Wilco music forum. I'm here mainly to find suggestions on new music and great albums that you all are listening to.

I consider a handful of people here to be good friends, I'll never forget the Wilco Red Rocks shows of 2003 where I met several of you. There are also many others here that I've never met in person but would consider a friend. And if it weren't for VC I would not be writing for The Line Of Best Fit, 'cause I met Thane & Hughes (the site's founders) here.

So all in all, VC has contributed to a big chunk of my life. Honestly, though, I don't even associate it with Wilco anymore. I associate it with finding most of my favorite music ever, and having the chance to write about that music. Over the past few years, music has become the biggest passion of my life, and I don't know if I could say that if it weren't for this place.

:wub :cheers :hug

I came here because this was the only place where I could talk about Wilco without getting either "huh? Wilco WHO?" or "Gaaaaaaawd they're so OVERrated!", not to mention "eeeww Jeff Tweeeeeeeeedyyyy?? Michael Stipe is SO much hooooottteerrr!!!?!???!?!?!?" as a response. :rolleyes

I realized very quickly that Wilco fans are about the nicest in the world............trust me, I've made my experiences with fans from other bands, and they all seem to have a law that goes something like "the more often you've seen the band, the more pretentious, rude & ignorant you have to become towards newer fans that haven't been as lucky as you" - totally 100% the opposite here.

I can't exactly remember if I found Donna here, or if we knew each other already from somewhere else, because I seem to have known her for like a 100 years :lol, but she and too many other people to mention have been the constants in my life that I needed during the darkest stages of it. I've had some of the best times of my life with people from here, and I know that there are many more to come :thumbup

And last but not least, even though I initially met him before an REM show, the fact that I am now married to the most fantastic person on earth is also due to Wilco. My husband was searching for a reason to get in touch with me after that initial brief meeting, and thought that the Wilco tour 2005 through Europe was a good topic to talk about, so he PMed me on another board like "oh I've noticed you are a Wilco fan too! Are you going to see them somewhere now?" So I had to write back, tell him I had to miss the tour due to an emergency surgery that couldn't wait, and it kinda came naturally that we ended up talking a lot, seeing as everyone else I used to talk to frequently was enjoying themselves on said Wilco tour. Clearly the best tour I've ever missed :wub

And did I already say that Wilco are the only band that never disappointed my - ridiculously high - expectations about albums, shows, songs, lyrics? Ever?

I know of a few personally, but I'd be interested to find out how many married/dating peeps found each other through VC.

Confess.

Also love how Dunja mentioned Donna... It seems like she's been the VC mom forever!! I remember sending a care package to her before I even met her in "real" life. When I did meet her I picked her up for a Wilco/REM show (we may have gotten lost) and took her & Brennan to shop for snacks... I just remember Scooby Doo fruit snacks. :lol My family tends to think I'm crazy about it, but I have met the most awesome people ever through message boards like this one.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

Mostly for something to do and plus, by now it's a habit.

What do you get out of coming here?

Mostly the social aspect. I get to "hang out" with friends. Plus I like the political discussions and the "Now Reading" threads.

How did you get into VC?

Way back in the day when VC had about 10 regular posters, my friend (now husband) Jay stumbled upon it. He realized another friend of ours, BrandonZ, was on here so he told me I should sign up. I still remember my first post.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

I do still consider myself a fan even though I think most of the stuff after YHF is kind of "meh". In a way Wilco changed my life and for that I am eternally grateful.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Anyone who likes their music would be a fan

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

For the reasons I listed above. Mostly social these days.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

I'm on Facebook more than here but I do also frequent a couple other boards.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Yes, I do. Great friends actually.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

Yes, and one day I will meet them.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

People who like the same music as me and who like to talk about books and current events. Most of the other boards are "mommy" type boards and all those people want to talk about is their kids and how much they hate their mother in law.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

I think when someone is into something, whether it be music, books, knitting, etc they start to research it online and realize there's a whole world of people out there with the same interests as them. Most of the people I know in real life do not have hobbies other than going to the bar or shopping. The people who do have hobbies, I've found, do belong to some sort of online community related to that hobby. I think I'm inclined to message boards because I have things that I'm interested in. I came here because I was interested in music and stay because it's fun.

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

Since VC started, there hasn't been a time that I haven't visited regularly.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

Yep.

What do you get out of coming here? How did you get into VC?

I met LouieB and Wendy in line, waiting to get into a Steve Earle show that we all won tickets to. They told me about this place (so blame them). I get some good musical advice, as to cool stuff to listen to. And also (you guessed it) some good ears to let me know what they think of my tunes, too, when I have something new to offer.

Also, some of the other boarders have pretty damn good bands/music themselves. It's nice to hear that stuff, too.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

Yes, I do. Although not obsessive.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Liking Wilco.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

I still like 'em, but there is more to the board than Wilco.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

www.obner.org -- music

www.iacmusic.com -- music (streaming/listening site)

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Haven't really been around here long enough yet, to truthfully determine that.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

See above.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

It's pretty friendly. And there's some good music advice that I get. Plus, it seems to skew a little bit more to my age group than some of the other music boards out there.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

I can't really psychoanalyze myself.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

I like the people here. Even ction. And JUDE.

What do you get out of coming here?

The illusion that I'm outgoing and social, which I am online, but in reality I'm a timid, awkward person who has enormous difficulty making new friends, and who is far more comfortable holing up at home with my girlfriend and my cats and my internet connection and ignoring the outside world. Teh Interwebs, and VC in particular, give me the social life that I am too inept to find in person.

How did you get into VC?

If I remember correctly, I was looking for a pre-sale password for a Wilco show in Kalamazoo in early 2005.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

None of their albums blew chunks. I wish I'd seen them live with Jay Bennett, but I don't feel shortchanged for missing out on that. I saw the Leroy Bach lineup once, plus the current lineup. I've loved all of their releases, to varying degrees, and think they're probably the best live band in America right now, if not the world.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Anyone who likes their music, and not just the one or two tracks they've heard on the radio.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

My interest in Wilco has not waned, but even if it had, I'd probably come to VC. It's a community where I feel (relatively) accepted and (not entirely un-) comfortable.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

When I first got onto the Web, I was a frequent participant on a Posies listserv, then a board for the website Spinnwebe (currently in semi-hiatus), then a Spoon board, a Ted Leo board, and a Pernice Brothers board. I've always had a primary online community where I spent entirely too much time, nearly always music-related. Since 2005, that place has been VC. I spend little or no time on the aforementioned boards now (the Spoon one is defunct, I believe). I check Facebook a few times a day, but otherwise my online socializing is done here, with a few occasional exceptions.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Yes. I've met several of them, and I've gone to several concerts with Wendy and Leo and a few select others. I've attended one living room show and two LRS pre-parties and met tons of other VCers, but there are lots more I hope to meet, and most of those whom I've met I look forward to seeing again.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

Sure. And I hope to meet them someday. I've missed about fourteen different chances to meet Jen and Ben, but hopefully will remedy that someday.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

For starters, it's an active enough community that there's always something going on here. Some other boards I've frequented have gone through long dead periods, or have had much smaller active user bases, so the tumbleweeds blow through and not much happens. VC sustains its activity pretty well. Then there's the mix of people -- there are some supremely funny people here, and some people who have fascinating things to say about music or politics or religion or whatever, and most of them are friendly and willing to answer questions or share opinions or help out with issues. If my neighborhood were like VC, I'd be a happy dude.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

See my answer to the second question above. I'm socially maladjusted. I function far better online than in person. I even met my girlfriend online.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

Comedy stylings and great taste in music.

What do you get out of coming here?

Please see above.

How did you get into VC?

I was trading shows back in the day. I hadn't used other message boards and wasn't really interested in joining one either. It was solely out of desperation to find certain shows that I had been to. People were very generous on this board and it was a small enough community to get to know some of the people.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

I'm a big Wilco fan. I don't see them much anymore as they tend to play large venues and I like the small club feel. I don't get out much these days so I prefer to spend my concert-going times on small clubs.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Buys their music, sees there shows

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

My interest hasn't waned but I don't think I could quit you.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

No

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

I do!!

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

I do!! There is a solid handful that I'd really like to meet.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

Because the people here aren't fools, like the majority of the people on campus that I have to deal with.

What do you get out of coming here?

Entertainment, music recommendations, I suppose.

How did you get into VC?

The tabs section. I've done a few tabs meself, not too shabby.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

Yes. Ironically I listen to YHF the least, though that doesn't mean I think it blew chunks.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Smarmy, I suppose.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

Habit, plus the people around here are cool and hilarious.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

Does Facebook and Last.fm count?

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

I haven't met any fellow VCers, Ohio and being underage for imbibing fluids doesn't help it either.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

Er, I usually consider friends to be a more personal thing than just people on a forum. While I'm sure that I'd be friends with them for reals if I had actually met them, but I haven't, so I'm going to say no but they probably are a lot of steps closer to being friends than a whole lot of people.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

Constant hilarity and absurdity. Plus, new music recommendations. Always a plus. Gotta keep street cred, you know.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

Getting a daily dose of intelligence rather than a dose of douchebaggery. I think that's pretty much it.

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

Why do you come to VC regularly?

i'm bored as shit at work. and enjoy hearing what other people think about various things wilco, phish, movies, other music, and so on. if i got a new job and didn't sit at a computer all day, i wouldn't necessarily miss this place.

What do you get out of coming here?

pretty much nothing but something to pass the time these days. oh, and definitely some sweet tabs and occasionally some shows from others.

How did you get into VC?

i was looking for wilco tabs and was finding the gumbo pages to be a little basic. i was extremely confused when i found this place - it was the first time i'd stumbled upon a message board. didn't get it.

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

yes. wilco is probably my favorite band ever, or at least shares the spot with phish, dylan, and maybe uncle tupelo.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

that's a toughy. for me, i consider myself a fan simply because i like them. nothing more. nothing less.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

pass the time. but my interest hasn't really waned.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

no

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

no

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

wilco tabs

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

i like the anonymity. i don't know that others lack the desire to be anonymous, but that's what i like about it. which is why i have no desire to meet any of you people, as cool as some of you seem.

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

i at least look at it every day at work and sometimes on the weekend. i think i'm here regularly.

Why do you come to VC regularly?

It's an addiction. And a great way to passively aggressively irk my fiancee.

What do you get out of coming here?

Great info about music I should be listening to; the latest Wilco news; an inflated, delusional sense of self-importance.

How did you get into VC?

Lurking for info and tabs. I first signed up to correct mistakes to tabs I saw. I regret the day I clicked on Tongue Tied Lightning :lol

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

I pretty much like all of the albums, but don't listen to them as much as I used to. Always eager to here what's next, though.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

Third testicle.

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

Hasn't waned. Plus I like this place.

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

I use Facebook to keep in contact with people and post on the Atlanta paper's Braves blog. Tried others but this one is right in line with my interests and so well organized. Some people get sensitive about the "there is already a thread about this" thing, but the mods handle it so well and make sure this place isn't a nightmare like a lot of message boards where it is impossible to find info or have any clue what anyone is talking about.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Haven't met any in person yet, unfortunately, but there are definitely some kindred souls.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

Not really. I don't mean that in a bad way, but I guess when I'm in an online community it is completely on my terms. Friends in life are special, do you want to be my special friend?

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

Wilco content (duh) but as I kept coming back I found a lot of similar interest with the people here that extended beyond Wilco.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

You should ask my fiancee.

And if you DON'T come to VC regularly, how often do you visit and why do you visit?

Why do you come to VC regularly?

For a while it was to piss on the Doors. But I learned my lesson. The Doors are alright.

What do you get out of coming here?

Less time spent watching House

How did you get into VC?

I think I found it looking for the chords to "Via Chicago".

Do you consider yourself a Wilco fan, even if you hate AM/SBS/BT/MA/MA2/whichever album blew chunks?

No matter how far I may stray, they're still the best band I've ever seen live.

How would you define being a Wilco fan?

I named my daughter Jeff. :stunned

If your interest in Wilco has waned, why do you still come around?

For the arguments in the MLB threads

Is there another internet community you spend more time at, and what kind of forum is it (music, sports, political)?

Nah. This is the only one.

Do you consider some fellow VCers friends?

Sure.

Do you consider a few VCers you've never met to be friends?

I don't think I've met anyone from the board. But hey, there's always tomorrow.

What did you find at VC that you haven't found at other internet communities, that made you want to stick around?

An almost perfect marriage of intelligence and eighth grade humor.

Is there something about YOU that you think makes you inclined to being active on a message board, that people who don't belong to internet communities lack?

An almost perfect marriage of intelligence and eighth grade humor :headbonk

Why do you come to VC regularly?

i'm bored as shit at work. and enjoy hearing what other people think about various things wilco, phish, movies, other music, and so on. if i got a new job and didn't sit at a computer all day, i wouldn't necessarily miss this place.

:wub you had me at bored.

Why do you come to VC regularly? What do you get out of coming here?

The combination of good music discussion and genuinely awesome people who are here. I also feel a sense of community how ever "removed" it is by the impersonality of the interwebs.

How did you get into VC?

I joined to see what the buzz was for A Ghost is Born before it came out and to try and get some b-sides, etc. from YHF. I slowly "got into" the VC after that...but I think it took a little while. Maybe 2 years?

I like Wilco, a lot. So yeah, I'd consider myself a fan. I only see about a show of theirs per year, but I don't go to tons of shows...so it's still a big deal. I don't think I could define being a fan for anybody but myself, and for me it's just following what a band does and listening to their music frequently, which I do.

I've posted other places, but this is the main place I post at.

Yes and yes. In a sense. I've met a handful of VCers and they were all cool people, and I interact more with some people on here, just via posting than I do with some of my older friends who don't live around here. I'm sure if I lived somewhere closer to more VCers I'd probably be friends with a few more of you, but as awesome as e-people can be I like real people the most.
