My daughter has asked for a Wii for her birthday (she turns 7). I told her I would think about it. It's a bit expensive for a birthday gift, but she has offered to have a slumber party instead of a paying to have a party somewhere.

If I do get one, I am looking for advice the accessories I need outside of the basic console (for example... so I need numchuks and controllers) and any suggested games for a seven year old (I also have a five year-old daughter).

I have never been a gamer so I am pretty clueless about this stuff.

Two controllers are a must. We also have nunchucks, which are used enough to be worth the additional expense.

My daughter is four and loves the sports games--especially tennis and bowling.

I agree about an extra controller, especially since you have two kids. It comes with one, but of course your daughter is going to have more fun playing tennis or baseball against somebody (and you know you're going to play it when she goes to bed). The controller will run you probably about $40. After you've had the console awhile, if you find you're going through a lot of batteries (the controllers use AA), you might get a charging stand, which will come with rechargeable batteries. I'm not sure how much they are, but my friends who use theirs a lot say it pays for itself pretty quickly.

A fun family-oriented game you might think about getting is Mario Party 8. My five-year-old cousin also kicked my ass at Mario Kart. I recommend buying games on ebay. I've gotten a few gently used games for around $30 apiece.

I just played the hell out of some tennis. I switched to baseball, but had to quit because that game effin cheats.

You gotta learn how to throw those off-speed pitches!

I knew it was not just me!

I have one of those "Wiilco" shirts.

she might be a little young and being able to read helps but there are several singing i guess you would call them games. theres a wii "sing it" and a high school musical thing that the girls that always end up at my house love. it takes two microphones and two earplugs for each adult in the house.

When I was 7 years old, I played a lot of Mario Kart (on the Super Nintendo).

I'm 21 now, and I still play a lot of Mario Kart, on the Wii and DS now. It's a good game that anyone can enjoy. In fact I wanted to go buy a copy today but they didn't have any (apparently they're hard to keep in-stock) so I had to settle for Metroid Prime 3, which is probably not a game you want to get a 7 year old girl.

The Wii is a lot of fun though, my brother, sister, and I are actually going to buy one for my cousin and her husband as a wedding present, in just over a week. Beer + Rock Band or Beer + Dance Dance Revolution is a good night. Children of course, don't need the beer part... but you might enjoy it!

I just finished playing Okami for the Wii. It's definitely the best game I've played for the wii. Think Zelda, except you have powers you can control by drawing on the screen using the Wiimote as a japanese calligraphy brush.

My library happened to have the game, but its worth buying if you are into those types of games at all.

In terms of games, Twilight Princess may be a little over the head of someone who's 7 (difficulty wise), but it's certainly a Wii must-have, if you plan on playing it at least a little.

I was also about to suggest Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, but obviously that doesn't work out so well...

On the original question, the Sports game that comes with the Wii is plenty entertaining for a while, so don't worry about getting a bunch of new games just yet if your kids will like sports. My son is 5 and doesn't have a great sense of timing just yet, so he doesn't like the sports games so much, except for bowling (which he loves). He plays games on the Wii Fit a lot, but that requires the purchase of the rather expensive balance board.

I also hear great things about Mario Kart, although I haven't bought it yet.

The Lego games are fun (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Batman) and my 3 year old and 7 year old boys love to play them. I don't know how much they would appeal to a 7 year old girl, but I'm a 34 year old girl and I like to play them.

My 3 year old (just turned 3 a month ago) can beat the Indiana Jones game. He only needs help with the parts where you have the blue book and you have to do the squares in a certain order. Other than that, he can load it up, pick his levels, and save without any help from me.

Oh, and he can switch what hand he holds the controller/nunchuck with and it doesn't slow him down at all. He can also lay on the couch with one hand behind his head and still play. Usually he just stands in front of the tv and jumps up and down the whole time he plays. I was quite blown away by how good a 2 year old could manage the Wii...

Anyone get Punch Out!?

It looks fun as hell. The original certainly was.

My girlfriend and I are planning to get a Wii soon. We're going to try to lose some weight on Wii Fit, but I also want some games for when she's at work. Suggests?

Also, can you download old Nintendo games to your Wii? So I could play the original NES version of Punch Out, Mario 1, 2 & 3, maybe some fucking Contra. Or is it just new games? I know nothing about Wii. I spent the last year playing Call of Duty 4 and 5 on Xbox 360 for days and days and days...

Yes, you can! There's some kind of Wii store on the main menu...you can buy and download a ton of old games there.

We just got a Wii a few weeks back. I'm not a big video game guy, but damn if this isn't fun. We picked up the Summer Resort game last week, hours of great fun there!

I've been playing the Wii Sports Resort and I am digging most of the games. Some I can do without though.

Any play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Echoes of Time? I need a certain number of friends to get this one character and don't have enough...Also, it would be a blast to play online...
