Wilco -- 4/25/09, New Orleans, LA

Recommended Posts

It was a gorgeous day in the Big Easy and, for a festival, I thought this was a pretty darned good performance. The band was loose when it needed to be, serious when it needed to be and showed a lot of versatility. Above all, the guys just seemed to be having fun. :thumbup

We got some good banter from Jeff, mostly as it related to a flag of a mustache that he kept referring to as pork chops. We got a start and restart on A Shot in the Arm. There was a funny moment -- not for John, I guess -- when he took a tumble on the band "amp jump" before I'm The Man Who Loves You. (He recovered nicely.) And the shirtless tech made a return appearance to bang the cowbell on Hoodoo Voodoo. :rock

I'm not sure if IATTBYH was actually on the setlist, but someone (Mike?) accidentally hit the intro synth or sample or whatever it is before he realized that wasn't the song everyone else was getting ready to play. Haha.

I also managed to get to John's interview session with David Fricke prior to the Wilco set and found it really interesting. They talked about, among other things, John's local roots; how he came to join Uncle Tupelo; his own musical influences; the IATTBYH documentary; and the new Wilco record. Really glad I was able to get over to that.

Anyway, here was the setlist for Jazz Fest:

Walken

Handshake Drugs

Company In My Back

You Are My Face

Pot Kettle Black

A Shot in the Arm

Side With The Seeds

Jesus, etc.

Impossible Germany

California Stars

Forget The Flowers

Box Full of Letters

The Late Greats

Hate It Here

Heavy Metal Drummer

I'm The Man Who Loves You

Hoodoo Voodoo (with shirtless bass/guitar/keyboard tech Josh on cowbell)

-----------------------

Casino Queen

Outtasite (Outta Mind)

In John's interview today with David Fricke he said it's self titled "Wilco". I guess there comes a time for every band when they release a self titled record.

And the show was great today (last few songs really made it awesome)! They all seemed super loose and having a lot of fun. Jeff was smiling like the whole show. Real nice day overall in New Orleans.

Self-titled according to a report from Wendy in the Just a Fan thread.

--Mike

I asked Jeff in line for the DVD signing one week ago today in Knoxville, and he said "still undecided."

And yes it was Brianne who broke the "self-titled" title news today. Way to get the scoop, Brianne! :lol

I sorta hate saying this, but I'm a little skeptical that there really isn't a title other than "Wilco". And I apologize for being such a doubter, but it just seems ... wrong when a word guy doesn't name the album something/anything!

:P Well, OK -- I guess that was taken already.

... and one more thing. After reading the Jay Bennett needing hip replacement surgery thread, hearing about all this amp and drum kit jumping (and seeing it myself in B'ton or Knoxville or both I can't even remember) ... nooooooo! Please don't hurt yourselves! :stunned :lol

John Stirratt said during his interview today with David Fricke that it's a self-titled album, making the self-mocking jokes about jokes about how that's a bad sign. He said it was because, although the album's content came together quickly, the art for the cover did not. Somehow that kept them from coming up with an album name. Of course, the album does contain the track "Wilco The Song." Makes you wonder.

what was the deal with this? the opening strains of shot in the arm are my favorite part of any wilco show. hearing it twice in my favorite city in the world? not sure i could deal.

I think there was a switch in the wrong position on Patrick Sansone's keyboard causing it not to play.

Super fun show in one of my favorite cities. The weather was perfect, the crowd was big, and Wilco was having a great time on stage. It was good old sweaty rock n roll. Just how I like it!! We ended up late night at The Maple Leaf Bar, where the Dirty Dozen Brass Band had us sweatin' out the funk, the Abita was cold, and there was a crawfish boil outside. Where else can you have cold beer and crawfish at 4AM on the sidewalk?!

Who the heck was this guy?! words cannot even describe: Skinny shirtless white dude with a John Oates-esque mustache and mullet. Dancing/gyrating around the stage playing cowbell during Hoodoo. Hilarious and scary at the same time!

I saw him for the first time in Milwaukee and was thinking, "Whoa--there's a lot of business going on there." John Oates-esque: perfect description of the whole package up top.
