Pitchfork Media's reaction to the new record

Recommended Posts

I still can't believe Pitchfork had the cojones to post this review. I remember them getting some flack for it when it came out.

God, I remember that. One of the funniest things I've seen in my life.

Pitchfork has flaws just like any other media outlet -- they just happen to be very, very particular ones. Not all of what they try works -- a lot of it bothers me, like it does many of you -- but I check their site at least once a day and consider it among my very favourite music news sources.

I don't get this anti-Pitchfork attitude. Like any review site, they review things so you don't have to buy everything that ever existed to find things you like. If they give things high marks that you think are awful, maybe Pitchfork is not for you. If they give things low marks that you think are manifestations of god on earth, then maybe Pitchfork is not for you. I tend to find that Pitchfork matches my taste most of the time and so when they give something a high mark and it sounds like something I would like, I go buy it. I discovered the New Pornographers and Destroyer that way. Of course, they gave the new Mates of State a middling review and I liked it (though not as much as Bring It Back), so they don't represent my exact taste.

Really, Wilco reviews are of limited use to anyone here. We're going to buy the album regardless of what anyone says so looking up Wilco reviews seems like an exercise in insecurity -- we want to be sure that other people think that our taste is cool. Sorry, but the really cool kids still don't think we're cool; it's better if we just accept that and be happy liking what we like.

Personally I can't wait for the day when a whole lot fewer people think Wilco is cool.....

Yeah I mean, I was 19 years old when I heard YHF. That was the perfect type of record for me. I actually had more trouble getting into Wilco's country tunes than getting into Wilco's noisey tunes or expiremental tunes if you will.

I have a hard time believing that YHF brought tons of "grown-ups" into the fold who weren't already there, or that the younger people who are Wilco fans now were brought into the fold by UT and Being There.

I'd say I'm a "mature listener", and although UT was on my radar, and I owned Summerteeth and MA, I didn't go nuts for Wilco until YHF came out (I was 35 at the time). And I'd never heard of Pitchfork until I started frequenting this place.

Grownups don't give one single solitary shit about that website, trust me.

Amen!

I'm not anti-PF, I just don't see why so much importance is thrust upon them by so many people. There are numerous magazines and review sites that do the same thing, some might argue they do it better, and more fairly too.

Wow, you had dreadful taste prior to discovering Wilco. I mean, REALLY dreadful.

Wilco is my favorite band.

I read Pitchfork every day.

My entry point for Wilco was YHF. I came to it thru Rolling Stone. At that time, my favorite acts included the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Everclear. When YHF came out I had only just begun venturing outside of modern rock radio to listen to acts like Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, the White Stripes and the Strokes. YHF was some respects an epiphany that changed the way I approach and listen to music - to the extent that I would say that YHF is one of the things that eventually led me to become a Pitchfork reader.

I like Pitchfork because unlike most sources for reviews they seem to be willing to utilize the full breadth and depth of their rating scale. It drives me nuts that a lot of reviewers will utilize a scale from 0-100 and never give an album anything below a 65.

That said, their constant and liveblogging of concerts and festivals is an annoying scenester indulgence.

Yes. It would be impossible to convey in words how boring a life I lead.

But I am excited for the new record. And boy that Ashes DVD may be the best music DVD in a long, long time.

Pitchfork lost its way about 2-3 years ago. They used to break outstanding and important acts such as The Wrens, Arcade Fire, Damien Jurado and countless others. Now it's the home of the hipster crap of the day. Whenever I see a 9.2 for a band named Wavves, Beach House or some other band with a watered down and bland sound, I just laugh. They clearly must have changed editors or key contributors or something. Or they figured they could make more ad $$ by focusing on F**k Buttons, Abe Vigoda and other shite bands.

I can believe it.

I think they have hit on quite a few new artists and great albums this year alone based on what they have given their "Best New Music" tag to.
