Sir Stewart
From Q Magazine:Beck has announced he's to start a new online covers project featuring some big name friends including MGMT, Devendra Banhart and Jamie Lidell. They'll all be part of a new section/project called Record Club on his soon to be revamped website. The idea behind the project is that Beck ropes in some of his musician friends to record a cover of an entire album in one day. To make sure they capture an immediate, live feel there'll be no rehearsals or arrangements done beforehand. The covered album will then be slowly released online with a song a week being uploaded to Beck's website and the websites of the musicians involved each record. The first album announced for the project is The Velvet Underground and Nico. Covering that in 24 hours without rehearsal, not something you'd imagine many musicians would do on their day off... Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich will also be involved in future recordings. From beck.com:We've been working on changes to the website for the last few months. We'll be adding new sections as they're ready. The first one to be added is called Record Club, an informal meeting of various people to record an album in a day. An album will be chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track will be uploaded once a week on beck.com as well as through the web sites of those involved with the project. For this first edition, after lengthy deliberation and coming close to covering Digital Underground's Sex Packets, all present voted in favor of the 'other' Underground's The Velvet Underground and Nico. Participants included this time around are Nigel Godrich, JoeyWaronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and from Iceland, special guest Thorunn Magnusdottir, and myself. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together, and to all of you for indulging in this experiment. More soon. Bek

Shakespeare In The Alley
The cover of Sunday Morning is outstanding. If anyone could pull this thing off, it's Beck. I'm excited about the rest of these. The dude knows some good talent, so this should be fun.

Three dollars and 63 cents
I think Beck might be one of the only contemporary artists I'd trust to cover that album. Sunday Morning is one of my favorites by VU and a song I never could've imagined anyone other than Lou Reed singing, but Beck's version is lovely, too. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest. HungryHippo
what a cool concept. i enjoyed Sunday Morning very much. can't wait for Femme Fatale and Heroin. bet Venus in Furs will rocking as well.
Synthesizer Patel
Is anyone able to save the stream of the first song? if you download this firefox extension (and obviously have the firefox browser in the first place - which i'd recommend if you don't) you then just need to click play on the link and then right click your mouse, drag down to 'download helper' - across to 'media' and then download the mp4 that shows up. it's easy!  download this and then follow what i said above - works for all embedded files on websites. explodo
Such a great idea and the first track sounds great. I love Beck. Now finish what you started and do an entire Nick Drake album.
sureshot
Now finish what you started and do an entire Nick Drake album. He already did, its called Sea Change
Shakespeare In The Alley
Sea Change is a marvelous record. There's definitely a lot of Nick Drake in there. And of course, Paper Tiger is 100% Beck trying to be Serge Gainsbourg. And succeeding, might I add.

Hell, even the title sounds like it would be a Nick Drake song.  But yea, definitely my favorite Beck album...in fact, I would dare say its a top 10 of the decade contender. Shakespeare In The Alley
New cover, "I'm Waiting For My Man," is up on Beck.com.
DAngerer09
man, beck's vocals sound great on that track, but I don't dig the music at all.
Shakespeare In The Alley
Oh man, I loved the music. It's all horribly, and deliberately, out of tune, and it fits with the spirit of the original song, I thought. I'm even more psyched for the rest of this album. I can't wait for the really intense tracks.

bigideas
the electronic Run, Run, Run might be my fav. it's funny when Nigel hits the mike with a malet. Thorunn Magnusdottir - is this the blonde that is also on The Information DVD?
Sir Stewart
the electronic Run, Run, Run might be my fav. Me too. This project is thrilling. I'm projecting here: Beck seems invigorated by the freedom of covering a whole album; the melodies and lyrics are decided, so it's a vehicle to just go nuts with the sound/feel. I'm excited for the eventual original material to follow.
