jff
I had a roommate in college that bought a guitar and learned one song to play. That was it. (This was in 1999.) It was awful. In 12th grade, each of the religion classes at my high school had mock weddings. One of my classmates played and sang More Than Words at each wedding ceremony.
Moss
So far I think I'm going to agree with 1986, it sure as hell is worse than 1974. Really the premise he goes with is the year in which the largest group of really bad songs was released which has nothing to do with how many good albums were released. Â Clearly the worst actual year for music (in the rock era) had to have been sometime in the 80's.

tinnitus photography
1976 was the worst... about the only great records i can think of are _Ramones_, _Jailbreak_ and _Agents of Fortune_, and the Modern Lovers' record was recorded and should have been released in '72. mjpuczko
it's insane to think that not only did Mtv show videos from popular artists/bands but they had quite a few shows dedicated to more 'underground' artists. plus, YO! Mtv raps. the best of them all
hardwood floor
i think 1991 wins / loses because bad music in the 70s you could listen to and not be repulsed you could laugh at how bad it was while you were singing along in the car that stuff from 1991 ... i mean, nauseating

Mike Watt (his lineup w/ Nels & two drummers), Violent Femmes, Bjork, etc. I can't remember if those were on 120 Minutes, or some other show...maybe Kennedy's show, or something. yermom
I think the Disney Channel has more music on it than MTV does now. The quality between the two is probably about the same anymore.
GtrPlyr
What have you got against "Various Positions?"Nothing at all, I quite like that one. So many great songs: Dance Me to the End of Love, Hallelujah, Heart with No Companion... It would be next on my list along with Death of a Ladies Man, The Future and Recent Songs.
