Farm Aid 2009--Wilco--Oct 4

Recommended Posts

for the record:

bull black nova

impossible germany

hate it here

heavy metal drummer

casino queen

hoodoo voodoo

It was clear to me that Jeff was displeased by following Gretchen Wilson...as evidenced by his comments

I met Nels side stage watching Tim Reynolds playing on Dancing Nancies with Dave Matthews...to of my favorite guitarists, was cool

Viewing links: farm aid

Some cool highlights, but Ill save comment til everyone has watched...man, we had good seats, but most of the rather aged crowd acted like they'd never been to a concert before...this really sucked the life out of things

Thanks for sharing. It seems a little ironic to me that Jeff would open with BBN at Farm Aid. :omg

But I suppose it's more of a metro/urban thing of late, not so much a Willie and Neil thing like it used to be(?).

Anyways gonna try and watch the clips.

I must've got Gretchen Whatsherhead on the stream, Jesus that woman needs a fast forward button. That shit is intolerable.

I guess the good news is that our boys are up next....

Wow. I find it hard to believe more than half a dozen people there could make the transition from Redneck Woman to Bull Black Nova. Bizarro...

Pretty good set though, the band seemed to win some folks over with the rest of the set. BBN probably blew a few minds but just didn't quite seem to fit in there. I like how Jeff used his Belleville roots banter to repel that truck stop biotch.

she jumped out onto the stage with "YALL READY TO PARTY??"

I threw up in my mouth a little bit

well...first of all when i read the line up...got got gretchen wilson and gillian welsh mixed up, so was like...WTF is this?

it was extremely uncomfortable to have to sit thru her set...the worst being the band version of the National Anthem, complete with bringing out the flag, a cheap ploy to get the crowd to react to HER...jeff's redneck comments were hilarious

Picking BBN to open served as the perfect sonic palate cleanser from the :yucky aftertaste left in your ears from Gretchen Wilson's redneck crap. It was necessary!

:yes It worked for me anyway!

Me too. :thumbup

(is this comment from VC's own poppydawn/robin ... :lol ... ???)

Robin (the dive bombing throwback) says:

Dear Wilco,

I love you lots, but if you don't stop forcing "Hate it Here" on your audience, I'm not just going to stop coming to your shows. I will show up with picket signs. Really. It's not a good song. Stop it.

Thank you.

Man, they ran those bands in and out pretty quick. We were there for the farm stuff, Bingham, Wilco, Neil, & Willie. Bingham begged to play another song, which would've made 4 songs and they yanked his ass. Shitty. Wilco was a bright spot. I was glad that shocked the old coots with BBN. Casino Queen rocked. Overall we had a good time. Long day.

Did Wilco's set get cut? I thought they would get longer than a half hour. Did Gretchen Wilson go over, thus irritating Jeff and inspiring his comments?

I've been out of town working all week and therefore missed all of this. I love that they came out with BBN at Farm Aid, I bet Neil likes that song. Anyways, I'm intrigued by what these comments from Jeff were. He's a polite guy and I'm wondering if it was apparent to the crowd in general that they were directed to anyone in particular.

I happened to be working in Maui (beats working in Toledo) and I was driven through Wille's town where he owns a house, past his street. Very cool.

That was great! I actually logged on while it was playing because I wanted to say how I thought that maybe JT's comments may have been misconstrued, but then he started bantering about rednecks before they played "Casino Queen", and that was feakin' hee-larious. His expression was very funny. What's the deal, indeed.

I am now listening (not watching because I'm typing) to Neil sing "Sail Away". I am very happy at the moment.

Join yer local CSA, Co-op, go to the public market, whatever have you. Eat up and enjoy.

I am a bit curious about that whole deal - as it bugs me.

After watching it - I guess he was messing around. To me, it's not automatically a bad thing to be called a Redneck. I guess it depends on where you are from, and what you grew up with.

I think Wilson has talent, but unfortunately, she is stuck singing junk songs. But, I guess that pays the bills at the end of the day. And - It is her choice. I think the Redneck deal is just part of her show, and a way she connects with her fans.

On the XM feed, the DJ's interviewed Wilson and she talked about how her next album was going to be the "first female southern rock album". It is going to be released on her own 'Redneck Records' label. She genuinely seemed surprise that 'Redneck Records' was not already taken.

Anyway perhaps she will have more control of what she is putting out.

Half my family members are fans, can't say I am, though.

I really got a laugh with Wilco opening their set with BBN.

What a 'fuck you' to the faux country crap before their set.

This (CNN link) reminded me of this thread.

(CNN) – She's a politician, an author, cable news contributor and sought-after speaker. But perhaps former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is interested in a new title: comedienne.

In what can only be described as a bit of a schtick, Palin had some fun Friday with the notion that she and her family might be rednecks.

Speaking at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, Palin claimed that some in the media have tried to portray members of the Tea Party movement as "violent or racist or rednecks."

"And I don't really have a problem with the redneck part of it, to tell you the truth. I don't," the former vice presidential candidate told the crowd. "That's fine with me."

Palin told the gun rights supporters how she recently searched online for the best redneck jokes to prepare for an appearance in Alabama where she was introduced by a radio personality named "Bubba."

"But, I'm reading them [thinking] these aren't funny, these are me," Palin said to laughter. "They really are."

Holding what looked like a BlackBerry, Palin told some of the jokes to the NRA crowd.

"'You're a redneck if directions to your house include turn off the paved road.'" "Yep," Palin said rhetorically, "Go to Wasilla, turn off the paved road. That's where we are."

"'You may be a redneck if you're ever involved in a custody fight over a hunting dog.'" "Todd and I? No. But, we have friends – yep, truly – a custody fight over their hunting dog."

" – 'If you yell at your husband, come move this transmission so I can take a bath.'" "I thought that one was funny," Palin told the crowd.

"-'If you use your fishing license as a form of i.d.'" "Well, I do that all the time in Dillingham," Palin said. "That's how you cash your checks."

Palin also told jokes about having steel toes in your "best shoes," going hunting on your honeymoon, getting the septic tank pumped as an anniversary present, having Thanksgiving dinner served on a ping-pong table, thinking Wal-Mart is expensive, and spending the night in the bed of your truck rather than paying for a hotel room.
