PopTodd
So, maybe I was overstating Prince's solo as being the best ever. Yeah, we can all do with a bit of hyperbole every now and then. What IS your pick? Me?Whilst Robert Quine remains my favorite guitar player ever, for the best solo ever, Ira Kaplan gets my nod for:Yo La Tengo - "Pablo and Andrea" It's everything that a solo should be... it takes the feel and emotion of the song and elevates them to all new highs.Fekkin' brilliant without any showboating. Mr. Heartbreak
I would put this one at the top: Frank Zappa, Inca Roads. If you don't care to hear the whole thing in context, it runs from 2:00 - 5:08 or so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg6X2hsl52E There's a longer, unedited version on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. II. Ghost of Electricity
this is simply impossible to do without providing a criteria to narrow it down. A guitar solo can be oh so many things.

Wild Frank
Genesis: Firth of Fifth. Steve Hackett Solo. Very cool.
MattZ
Well, the first one that popped into my mind was Glenn Tilbrook's (Squeeze) solo from Another Nail for My Heart.
GtrPlyr
^^ Tilbrook's an incredible guitar player; very underrated. I don't know if I have a fave solo, but it's hard to beat these ones: All Along the Watchtower - Jimi HendrixComfortably Numb - David GilmourSympathy for the Devil - Keith Richards I tend to prefer melodic and heartfelt solos over technically showy ones. Guest Runaway Jim
Trey (Phish) - Harry Hood - 10/23/94 Simply my favorite moment in musical history, and my favorite guitar work ever. 15 minutes of pure bliss.
uncool2pillow
Neil Young has the best 1-note guitar solo on "Cinnamon Girl". I'm partial to Bob Mould's solo on "Wishing Well". Any time Richard Thompson picks up a guitar, it's better than 99% of what's been played.

I agree with that last statement. Those three mentioned are indeed hard to beat (and for different reasons)

twigboyjoe
Neil Young has the best 1-note guitar solo on "Cinnamon Girl". Yep, brilliant in it's economy! Pure feel over everything else...reckon Southern Man is his finest though'.
hardwood floor
Kevin Salem's solo from "In a Whisper" is my favorite mind-blowing
lamradio
Brian May - "We Will Rock You" I wouldn't say it's the best solo ever but it's definitely one of the greatest in my book. I love how there are no chords behind it, just the famous stomp.
Winston Legthigh
I second the nomination for Inca Roads. For simplicity, I love Lennon's solo on Yer Blues.
jff
Richard Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights Everything about this solo is glorious.
PopTodd
Richard Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights Everything about this solo is glorious. As far as RT goes, I gotta go with "Calvary Cross"
Wild Frank
There's a nice Marc Ford solo on the Black Crowes track 'Sometime's Salvation'. For technical stuff how about Steve Vai: 'For The Love Of God'
Sir Stewart
This has always been easy for me: Keith Richards on Sympathy For The Devil.
Degenerex
This is impossible, but... "Watermelon in Easter Hay" - Frank Zappa"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd (the live, Pulse version)"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - Hendrix Those are my 3 favorite right now. Wild Frank
Thinking of Neil Young, the version of 'Like a hurricane' on 'Weld' has some nice solo's. The songs kind of grinds to a halt and then gets going again for another five minutes or so.
Synthesizer Patel
i don't really like guitar solos (that prince one included), i'd rather have a great riff. if there needs to be a solo it needs to be fast, and make you wish there was more. here are 2 that i like: matchbox (1.57 is when the magic starts)
jff
Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" is one of my favorite long-form guitar solos. I'm kind of surprised nobody has mentioned John, Paul and George's classic solo battle on "The End."
