drupress
This is a pretty wicked cover of Ashes Of American Flags. The banjo player kills it at the end. Any thoughts?
Atticus
enjoyed that a lot she misses a chord in the "all my lies are always wishes" lines (it's F#dim7, she's playing F# minor), but what great accompaniment
Lodestar
she misses a chord in the "all my lies are always wishes" lines (it's F#dim7, she's playing F# minor), but what great accompaniment That distracted me, too -- it turns it into this weird power pop chorus -- but other than that, I really loved this rendition. I thought maybe poon was being a bit nitpicky in calling that out, but it's very distracting.
CasinoQueen
WOW! What a beautiful version of this song! She really puts a lot of emotion into this, you can tell that this song really means something to her. The vibrato in her voice is soft and sweet, full of pain yet still reaching for hope. Does anyone know anything more about Raina Rose? I'm going to have to look her up!
choo-choo-charlie
F#dim7 is a difficult chord, and playing an F# minor is an easy substitute. Yes, I agree that the effect is a little jarring, but hey, overall, she did a pretty good job, good enough for me not to worry about nitpicking a chord.
JerseyMike
Trevor Smith is a bad-ass banjo man and all around cool dude.

Very enjoyable.
PrivateBeachInMichigan
Agreed, it misses that tension and release thing, but overall it would be a great surprise to hear someone bust this out like that. Very enjoyable. Wow, we have quite the audience of music snobs here. She plays a fifth instead of a flatted fifth and people are jumping on her like a trampoline for it. How about the fact that she sings this song with more soul than anyone ever has? With all due respect to Mr. Tweedy and company, I prefer this version to any I've heard Wilco play live, or the album version for that matter. Take a second listen, and then a third, and if you're still hung up on one note in the chord of the chorus, I think you're missing something big (for one thing the Fmin allows a little more flexibility for a vocalist to improvise. I'd say there is sufficient tension and release in her vocal dynamic. C'mon people!)... the test of a good cover is not if it passes the critique of a critical listening, and is played note for note. If it's good, you can feel it in your soul. And I did. When does Raina come to Santa Cruz? Sign me up.
CommerceComet
With all due respect, watch the opening of the Ashes DVD, where Wilco plays this song in an empty Cain's Ballroom and Jeff's voice is worn from a hectic tour. Take a second listen, and then a third, and if you're still hung up on this YouTube video, I think you're missing something big.

I felt kinda let down at the end of it, honestly.

Smokestack Joe
this is her cover the of song, it doesnt have to be an exact replica of the wilco song, hence the cover. it is her interpretation. hell, she could have added or subtracted a lyric or two and that would be ok with me. i really dig the cover. but i still like the cover of IATTBYH by JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound. totally the best. http://www.myspace.com/theuptownsound

Guest Speed Racer
Exactly this. Watching that never fails to induce chills and goosebumps. Never. That version of Ashes is probably my least favorite. Like, to the point where I want to turn the sound off. I really can't stand any rendition of any song off the DVD, but that one kind of epitomizes everything I dislike about the film. Well, maybe my second least-favorite version of the song, because this one not only did nothing for me, but that's a pretty important chord she missed.

BreezyGrass
I think it was a good cover. Had I been in that crowd and they broke this out I'd be pretty happy. The singing and the banjo playing are good. I haven't checked there own stuff out but I'm sure its great. The arrangement was interesting albeit a bit rushed I felt. But overall a pretty nice slice of youtube!
