bjorn_skurj
Vibes, man. Hitting 40 I dreaded in the approach, but when it happened I found it to be affirming, in the sense that I felt good about myself for having survived that long, and that I was established in a way. I hope your milestone works out in a similar fashion.

Sir Stewart
You'll be nostalgic for 2010 when you're 70.

I hope you don't look as bad as your avatar I have a dreaded milestone birthday this year as well, and it ain't 30 (or the next one)

The High Heat
As long as you've another birthday coming up, what's the matter? I'll be 40 in September and I'm not as old as I was when I was 25.
Lammycat
The "mid-life crisis" panned out to be a wonderful new awakening with a bright horizon for me!
watch me fall
I'm turning 40 this weekend. Some days I feel it, others I don't. Definitely don't look it, at least not to the lady at Publix who carded me a couple weeks ago and then laughed and called me babyface when she saw the birthdate on my license. Hey, you either get older or you die. I prefer getting older.
cryptique
I thought 40 would be a big deal, and it just wasn't. I feel much younger than my age -- in fact, I don't really feel any different than I did 15 or even 20 years ago, aside from a few extra aches and pains in the knees and ankles. I'm sort of looking forward to being 50, though that's still a ways off.
Wilco Worshipper
I am turning 40 in less than a month, as well. I know I don't feel it, I CERTAINLY don't ACT it, nor do I look it (at least that's what I gather from all the "nu-uh"'s I get when I tell people...lol). This past year for me has been the best in about 10 years for all sorts of reasons, so it's "all good"! So I agree with the rest of the crew, revel in the fact that you're alive and healthy and happy (I hope)!!!
bobfrombob
I thought 40 would be a big deal, and it just wasn't. I did 40. I'm sort of looking forward to being 50, though that's still a ways off.I did 50 too. Crow Daddy was talking about wasted life cliches. There's lots of age cliches - like only as young as you feel, age is just a number, etc. I never understood why people worried more about turning say 40 than they did about turning 47. I'm generally happier now than I was at 40 or 50. And I think I'm healthier than I was at 40. Don't sweat it.
bleedorange
It has seemed to me that milestone birthdays only really affect those that consider birthdays a big deal. My wife had a tough time with turning 30 a couple of months ago. But she's always treated birthdays as momentous occasions. Thirty was just another day for me, and I suspect it will be the same for me in the future.

lamradio
I'm turning 30 next month. Have to admit it has bothered me a little.. Mostly because I have no idea where my 20's went! I know that's what everyone says, but I guess it started when I had kids and started working a real job. Ever since I had my first kid in 03, my 20's have just blown by .... I seriously can't think of a single major event that happened when I was 24, or 26, or 27.... Working hard, raising kids, etc. causes the time to fly I guess.... But I can say I've enjoyed the heck out of it (the little bit that I can remember), and I am looking forward to my 30's.
Hoodoo Man
40 was my best birthday in years! Friends and family came over, my old band played for the first time in 10 years and I got presents. I asked my wife when I turned 41 why there was no fanfare since living to 41 was a greater accomplishment than living to 40. She didn't go for it. For me, 30 was harder than 40. Sir Stewart
Yeah as far as cliched wasted life stuff goes, I've had that feeling every day of my life.
LouieB
As one of the few VCers to actually turn the big 60 this week, turning 40 seems like a very long time ago in some respects. Don't get too stressed about your age; you really can't do anything about it. (Actually 50 is a pretty big landmark.) LouieB

Moss
I'm a happier and more well adjusted person at 40 then I was at 20. Probably the only thing I don't like is having to constantly worry about what I eat.
gogo
That sounds about right. I'd say I'm definitely healthier and saner at 42 than I was at 32. Men at Fortyby Donald Justice Men at forty Learn to close softly The doors to rooms they will not be Coming back to. At rest on a stair landing, They feel it moving Beneath them now like the deck of a ship, Though the swell is gentle. And deep in mirrors They rediscover The face of the boy as he practices tying His father’s tie there in secret, And the face of that father, Still warm with the mystery of lather. They are more fathers than sons themselves now. Something is filling them, something That is like the twilight sound Of the crickets, immense, Filling the woods at the foot of the slope Behind their mortgaged houses. Ghost of Electricity
That is a fabulous poem. I must check out more from Donald Justice. And I think PopTodd was right to wish you a happy birthday, and so i'll do the same.
Guest Speed Racer
Yes, happy birthday! I wake up every day feeling excited to be here. Even on my worst of bad days (and I've had plenty), my first thought has always been wild optimism - occassionally tempered in the past by obviously less-than-ideal circumstances. But waking up like that - that alone makes me grateful, and will hopefully ward off feelings of regret later.
