Maddie Hope
I kinda searched, I take it most don't care for this song. That's cool, I just would like to know why? Good or bad, words, music, ect. What do ya'll think? To start... IMO...the music i love, the words i am still trying to take in, but i like this song, it is not the normal of words or music which appeals to me... each listen makes me love it that much more cuz' i heard more love, depth, feelings... but this is just my opinion... what's yours? jff
Deeper Down, to my ears, is easily and clearly one of the best songs on the album. Top three, without a doubt.
Guest Speed Racer
This is one of those songs where I feel like Wilco would have been best served if Nels made a pot of coffee during the recording/performance of this tune. After seeing it live, I have concluded that every part of the song I don't like is, literally, in his hands.
choo-choo-charlie
I still think this could have been an Autumn Defense track.
bleedorange
Favorite song on the album.

Guest Jules
Great song. Kind of sleepy live. Better solo.
bjorn_skurj
Whatever they were aiming for with this one, they missed it, as far as my ears are concerned.
Gobias Industries
Whatever they were aiming for with this one, they missed it, as far as my ears are concerned. Did you aim the speakers at your ears? Sometimes incorrect speaker positioning leads the song to miss the ears entirely, you know. You may have just not heard the song, period.
Hoodoo Man
I've liked it from first listen. I think that except for maybe BBN it's the most experimental song on the album, but it doesn't venture into any kind of noise just for the sake of noise territory. It retains its melody and the instruments are discernable enough to where you can hear what each band member is contributing to the song. Lyrically, it might not be Jeff's best, but it conveys a message to me.
Mizzy
Deeper Down is my least favorite Wilco track, from any album. For the past two shows that i've attended it has been used as a bathroom break, much in the way Outlaw Pete is used in a similar fashion at Springsteen shows. It's a complete buzzkill, stopping any positive momentum in its tracks. My concert mates and i often ask, "why do Wilco love that song so much"? We've always been baffled. It didnt really accur to me until today that people liked it. Its cool if you do, i'm not going to tell you not to. But for me, it just puts the breaks on all the good vibes Wilco throws out there. Too slow, combined with too bland.

Ghost of Electricity
It's maybe the third or fourth brightest star in what is a pretty dark sky.

MCHowdy
The boxing metaphor in the first verse kills it for me before it really gets started. Tired, cliched.
Sir Stewart
I remember particularly not enjoying this song when I used to try to listen to this album.
Ghost of Electricity
I remember particularly not enjoying this song when I used to try to listen to this album.Actually i just listened to a bunch of it and was mildly surprised that i mildly enjoyed it. Then I went and out me on some YHF, and promptly forgot that W(TA) existed.
Vacant Horizon
Deeper Down, to my ears, is easily and clearly one of the best songs on the album. Top three, without a doubt. couldn't agree more. if the album had opened with deeper down and wilco song being a bonus track, the album would have been completely different. its a classic tweedy song both lyrically and musically. theashtraysays
if the album had opened with deeper down and wilco song being a bonus track, the album would have been completely different. Good point. I don't think "better", but definitely "different". Wilco (the song) as the opener kinda says "OK, this one's going to be a rock and roll record". Deeper Down says "just kidding, folks". lost highway
Great song. Love the lyrics. The arrangement and mood is really cool. I don't get the distaste for it, or the album in general. Honestly I think both SBS and W(TA) are both amazing albums with about 3 or 4 weak points on each. I will happily take several more years of Wilco albums if 7 songs out of 11 are as thoroughly enjoyable, original, and well developed as their recent batting average has been. I like thinking about triremes row, I like singing along about the comfort of a kiss. Great for driving to work. That's just me....
a-me-with-a-you
I noticed the same narrative trick as in "She's a Jar". The insult of a kiss, the comfort of a kiss/ she begs me not to hit her, she begs me not to miss her. Other than that I think it's place on the album is logical, it's not dreamy and haunting enough for a last track, not hard rocking enough for an opener and if "One Wing" hadn't stood where it stands, it'd come right before BBN. Notice this would mean a great similarity between AGIB and WTA. ALTWYS/Hell is Chrome/SpidersWTS/Deeper Down/Bull Black Nova Deeper Down is definitely in the top half of WTA songs, but I wouldn't think twice about skipping over it to get to One Wing often times. Maddie Hope
it's a pee song for me, too A Shot In The Arm is my break song Thanks everyone for your replies, very interesting
The Inside of Outside
As far as the live experience, I agree with: buzzkill and pee break. As far as the album version, it's meh.
augurus
Deeper Down is excellent, and sounds great live. If anything, they need to turn up the volume on the percussions for this song live.
Guest Speed Racer
If anything, they need to turn up the volume on the percussions for this song live. When I think of Deeper Down in my head, a lot of percussion fills from BAITUSA get inserted into it, like the triangle (?) from Pretty Sparks.
