Moss
this has been an interesting thread...i was thinking there might be some parallels drawn between this situation, and how some may perceive my posts here...i am glad that people don't take my non-Wilco posts as spam, and i certainly try to limit them to topics of interest to the community (eg, i won't post any photos of the recent Robyn show ). I just wanted to say, I really enjoy your pictures and reviews and would be glad to even check out the Robyn stuff. Don't hold back on my account.

kidsmoke
Yeah...but if he were a new poster, would your opinion be the same? The interwebs are HighSchool with anonymity. Yes, it would. I would only have a problem if it appeared he was trying to use our forums to sell something. We don't allow that or this place would be nonstop spam.
Magnetized
WHEW! You can't say we don't articulate our intentions around here! This has been a very interesting thread to read, and it would be a good one to somehow pin as an object lesson in line-drawing. Or maybe that's overkill, but it does demonstrate how, despite the best of intentions all the way around, misunderstandings can so easily occur when you're dealing with just the written word, devoid of any--or much--personal knowledge of the speaker, and with only emoticons to convey subtleties. Donna, so, so sorry about your doggie, and everything else going on.
Wendy
Yes, it would. I would only have a problem if it appeared he was trying to use our forums to sell something. We don't allow that or this place would be nonstop spam.... like the guy who asked us if it was okay to build bean bag toss games (like Baggo) but put the name "Wilco" on it, and then sell them here at VC? It was a while ago. Good times.
Guest Speed Racer
Yeah...but if he were a new poster, would your opinion be the same? The interwebs are HighSchool with anonymity. High school is high school. Everything else is what it is. This board is a nice place with people with foibles who sometimes make mistakes. Out of 16000 registered users, less than a handful of bad apples. Try looking at the brighter side more.

Guest Speed Racer
What better way to reintroduce the newcomer than introduce her(?) to the VC lore?
kidsmoke
What better way to reintroduce the newcomer than introduce her(?) to the VC lore? Yes, her. Deb. Deb, don't let us scare you off. We are a marvelous blend of goofy, brilliant, and cranky. A nice mix.
Guest Speed Racer
Thought I'd check. Just my luck the most mis-sexedmember of the board would get someone else wrong. We're wonderful,Deb, unless we're not and then you just let us know. Like Entertainment Tonight we seek to enlighten, inform and entertain.
Griddles
This might just be the most enlightening thread I have ever read on VC. So way to go.
bobfrombob
... outfitted myself in a black leotard and tights to best facilitate any tarring, feathering, and riding out of town on a rail...I hope it's not inappropriate if I suggest this would be a better place if everyone were to be outfitted in black leotards and tights (I just pluralized leotard and have no idea why). Don't hold back on my account. thanks! here's the link:http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/robyn-diamond-rings-natalia-kills-house-of-blues-b/ it was a pretty fun show to shoot, esp the opener Natalia Kills...not too many indie rock bands give you looks like this (but the music was canned beats crap)

Not often I can influence their musical tastes. Actually I was not influencing, just sounded like some poppy, dancy, electronic stuff that she would like so I took a shot. I will send her the link. OK, back on topic. Welcome Deb!
ih8music
I'm a mod on another board and we have a similar policy there where newbie members who try to advertise stuff are treated more harshly than established members. If you want to share your work with other members of your community then there's nothing wrong with that at all... but if you're a carpetbagger you can fuck off. If you're in between, then spend some time to become a part of the community before talking about your stuff. It's pretty simple. The main problem I've noticed here at VC re: newbies is how a very small group of frequent posters tend to dominate conversations, often by derailing threads into rehashing baggage from past conversations. That, and all the sarcastic one line replies and in-jokes. I mean really, next time a newbie puts up an album rank thread - just resist the temptation to list them chronologically. Guest Speed Racer
I've probably registered at and participated in at least 10 message boards over the years, and I can't think of a single one where longtimers didn't dominate conversations and engage in bits and in-jokes. In some cases, it turned me away from the boards; in others, the in-jokes and the conversations were ones I did want to participate in, so I hung around. You can't walk into a room full of friends (and frenemies) and become bff with them in 10 minutes. You don't start a new job and immediately hit it off with everyone in the office. It's okay that it takes time for people to acclimate to an online community; it would be foolish to think it would be otherwise.
Doug C
The main reason that I converse in any context, face-to-face or cyber, is the chance to make sarcastic replies and in-jokes. That's probably why I have few friends, because it makes me annoying to most people and because it makes most people annoying to me (because they don't get the references, sarcasm, etc.). There is a difference, though, between enjoying witty banter including in-jokes, references, etc. and being a pompous, d-bag, a-hole. There is nothing more unwelcoming and annoying. I can state without equivocation and with no fear of contradiction that no place would be better if I were outfitted in a black leotard and tights.
dmhphoto
First I'd like to say it feels good to be called a 'newbie' at forty something years old. Thanks for that. Secondly I joined this site because my friends were sick of hearing about my wilco obsession so I thought I could find others like myself here. For the record I don't usually make a good first impression. I do more listening than talking and don't have any opening razzle dazzle. I should have articulated my intentions better. But once you get to know me I'm a pretty likable person. To be honest I was making the journey in May by myself and wanted to get know some fans before I started. I mentioned the b-word because I thought it would give me some credibility with my project. It is not something that will be available for sale. It is a fine art book that I hope to give to the band one day and consists of that first moment when I became a fan. I will be putting out a blog of my journey and will post the link when it's ready. Nothing is for sale. My only thought of the pulling of the thread matter is I wish someone in the VC community had said, "Hey dmhphoto, welcome but your thread sounds like you're are selling something which is prohibited on this site" Then I could have repliedin the open forum that that was not my intention at all. Newbie's really don't know what they're doing-You have to be gentle with them. But on the flip side a great conversation was started and I like my monitor person (Donna) very much. So thanks for the welcome and glad it's over see you all soon

Newbie's really don't know what they're doing-You have to be gentle with them. It probably worked best that no one mentioned anything in the thread and discussed matters with a mod or admin first. Things got real ugly in the past examples that I gave, before the whole thread was yanked. And I think in both situations they both defended themselves and still some VCers attacked them pretty harshly.
TemplePilot
I thought the idea and original post were great. I find it absurd it was removed. The intention couldn't have been more clear or innocent. There were no links, you weren't asking for any money and nothing was being sold.
