Last time I saw him there maybe two dozen people there. It was in Des Moines, butbi can't imagine him selling out many venues these days.

Despite the fact that it was a 100-seat venue and there were no advance tickets, as you note, he's not even selling out places like that, which is a shame.

It was a funny night.  As my friend and I walked toward the venue Grant was outside about a block away.  We stopped to chat and then we all went in together and hung out in his dressing room until the opener went on stage.  When Grant started there were maybe 25 people in a u-shape around the stage.  He sang a few songs from his new record and then turned to the person on the left and asked what they wanted to hear.  And then he went person-by-person around the room and took requests.  There were only a few songs he politely declined to play (Diane and Turn on the News among them).  He sounded great and it was a nice reminder of the depth of his catalog.

lol..."Diane" and "Turn On The News" would have been top picks for me too.

For "Turn on the News" he just nicely said no but for "Diane" he went on a bit about why he has stopped playing it.  In short he said that he got uncomfortable with the subject matter and added "for 30 years I've been singing about the murder of a 15 year old girl ..."

A day late with this, but I saw Dave Mason's Traffic Jam last night. Fun show, great collection of songs, and his guitar playing is still fantastic.

I saw this show fairly recently too. Agree with all your comments. I would see him again if he comes this way for sure!

yeah i can see how he'd want to move on from that.

Hopefully going to see Two Cow Garage later tonight. See if I can make it.

Saw Robbie Fulks and a pick up band do the Basement Tapes on Monday. That was crazy fun.

A FB friend was at that show.  Small world.

He runs the Husker Du online database.  Paul Hilcoff.

Oh sure.  I met him.  There were four of us in the dressing room before the show:  me, my friend Mark, Paul, and Grant. And then a fifth guy, who Grant met at a bookstore earlier in the day, joined us.  Small world indeed.

Alone Together is one of my favorite albums. I've never seen him live, though.

Whoah, they're still around? Slip into something....

Yes indeed.  They got back together about five years ago and play occasional shows.  The shows are pretty much all between the Washington DC to Boston route 95 corridor.  And every one I've seen has been fantastic.

Saw Hugh Laurie & his band tonight at Riverside's beautifully restored Fox Theatre (Where "Gone With the Wind" was first shown!). Omigawd, I am so utterly smitten. What an adorable, engaging, consummate performer is Laurie, and what a crack band he has assembled in The Copper Bottom Band! My cheeks hurt from smiling so much, and my head is full of songs. Ran the gamut from raucous to poignant, with never a dull moment in an almost 3 hour show! A highlight for me was the positively brilliant "St. James Infirmary". The evening closed with the Alan Price tune "Changes" and it was flat-out lovely.

What a party. I could have stayed all night. SEE HIM if you can! You'll thank me. :)

Also, man does Laurie have some great moves! Who knew?

How was the show?  Where did they play?

Fantastic, as always.  Came on at 9:00 and finished at 12:30 (with a break in the middle).  Played a couple of new songs and a mix of stuff from all of their albums.  Very few covers in the main two sets (only REM's Shaking Through) but pulled out new and old covers for the five or so encores.  A great time.
