Magnetized
Hey folks, if you're going to Solid Sound this year, there's a Facebook group you should join. It's called Solid Sound 2011! (yes, with the exclamation mark) and it's different from the "official" Solid Sound Festival page. It's a smaller group of people, mainly VC members. Some of you may recall my dismal attempt to create a VC meetup at last year's SSF. Actually, the response was great and everything would have gone off like clockwork, except that the restaurant (The Hub) screwed up the reservations. I can't really blame them--I don't think anyone expected the deluge of people coming into North Adams last year. So I was thinking--maybe once more unto the breach, dear friends! It seems like it might be easier to manage a meetup by creating an event for the Facebook group. I'll be glad to create the event over there, and I'll explore some possible places we could meet. Thoughts, anyone?
smells like flowers
I'm the last living person without a Facebook account, so would you post here as well if there's a meeting spot and time? Much appreciated!

Much appreciated!Yes, absolutely. In fact, if anyone wants to just reply here, that's fine. Facebook is a bit easier for managing lists of attendees, but it will be fine to just indicate your intentions here.
kidsmoke
Well, I will certainly be there. And I'll raise a toast to you, Diane, for making arrangements! Can't wait to see so many faces again, and to meet whoever I haven't.
laundrymachinedream
Hey! Not trying to derail thread, but I have a question! I recently moved to NYC from far away, so the idea of going to this is a reality. I work Friday, so I am looking to make it up there for the other two days. Being new to this area, what are the travel options to get to Solid Sound? I see they teamed up with a transportation company, but it looks like I can't go that route as they are only leaving on Friday at Noon. Thank you for any recommendations! There's no way you can take off work one day? That would be the best thing, obviously, because Wilco's playing a full set Friday night and it would be a shame to miss it. Also, that Peter Pan bus looks very inexpensive. If that's not doable, I guess I'd suggest just driving. It's about 3-1/2 hours from the NYC area.
Three dollars and 63 cents
There's a Greyhound that leaves the Port Authority at 5 on Friday and gets to Williamstown at 9:45. It's $51. I'd assume it will take longer because of traffic at that time of day, but you might still be able to catch the tail end of Wilco. You could take the cheaper Peter Pan bus back Sunday. There's a Saturday morning bus, too, but by the time you get there you'll have missed a good chunk of Saturday's events. I'd be more worried about finding a room at this point. That will be tougher if you don't have a car. You can check the festival website to see what hotels still have openings.
Magnetized
Back to the original topic. . . Really? There's just one signup on the Facebook page and two people saying they're interested here on VC? I know there are more of us than this going to SSF2. Do you not want to get together, or is the suggested time/locations not good for you? Or maybe some of you just haven't gotten around to responding. People, this is what makes being a cruise director so frustrating!! Seriously, I would kind of appreciate it if people would weigh in, either here or on the Solid Sound 2011! Facebook page. holyshit
What IS the suggested time/location?
tinnitus photography
i signed up but not sure what my schedule is gonna be like...but i will be around, so say hi if you see someone w/ a black messenger bag full of camera gear.
Magnetized
Oh yeah, the suggested time/location. . . . I posted that on Facebook but not here. Sorry! Actually, I was thinking Friday, between 5:00-7:00 (anytime within those hours), and we should pick something close by Mass MoCA. I was throwing out there the idea of the bar at the Holiday Inn or that little open bar overlooking one of the courtyards at Mass MoCA itself. That might be problematic, however, due to crowds. So actually, this is still a work in progress. Last year we tried the Hub but that place was insanely popular, and everyone sort of dispersed to other destinations since we couldn't get in. There was a barebones little bar near there where several of us went, but I don't remember the name of it. So basically I'm not much of a party planner, am I? I remember that Park is a VC member who actually lives in North Adams. Perhaps he will be kind enough to step in and help out with a local's perspective? u2roolz
I almost got to posting this before Diane's response above. My .02 cents: I consider myself in the boat of not wanting to meetup after just having driven 3 hours and trying to find my hotel and then getting ready for Wilco. Maybe this is why not that many people have clicked "yes". Now, if The Autumn Defense were headlining Friday I'd be more open to meeting people in the designated time. I don't know. There's just something about driving 3 hours and having that nice cushy buffer to sit in my hotel room and relax to rest up for Wilco. In my mind, I have the next 2 days to check out the place a lot due to the schedule (obviously). I would be all for something on the other 2 days, but please don't change things because of this post. Maybe have 1 meetup per day? Edit: Also, most importantly I'd rather be stuck in traffic knowing that the band goes on at 9:15 than trying to rush for a 5 o'clock meetup. Turnips
I'd love to get in on this meetup, will be driving from Toronto on Friday and hope to arrive by around 5, should be enough time to quickly get settled and head over. I'll keep my eyes on this thread and the facebook group for updates
Magnetized
Re u2roolz's comment above, yep, I totally understand. I wasn't suggesting, by the way, that everybody needs to get together for 2 full hours (5-7), just that anyone from VC who wants to should try to come to the designated meeting spot (whatever we decide on) sometime between those hours. Purling Hiss starts at 6:30 in one of the courtyards, then Pajama Club is on at Joe's Field starting at 7:45, so I figure people may want to get to any get-together on the early side of that 5-7 timeframe. The main reason I was suggesting Friday is that some of us don't know many other VCers, so it would be a way for people to get all convivial and stuff. But as far as I'm concerned, we can definitely get together more than just once. Part of what made this festival so incredibly awesome last year was the feeling of community spirit. Breaking news: Wilco is in Maine today, mastering the new record!!!
kidsmoke
Diane, that little bar we ended up at last year would suit me just fine, and was very very close to the SSF entrance. Did I mention I'm bringing homemade beef jerky? If Bren and I don't eat it all on the drive from California? No seriously, I'll be bringing the jerky. So no worries about beers on an empty stomach. RaspberryJam
You're driving?! They have to. Between the loads of beef jerky and recording equipment can you imagine what their baggage fees would be?
skybluescott
Since I don't post here much I suppose I'll just lurk around the edges of the meetup. My wife and daughter and I will be there but I doubt we'll be there in time for that 5-7 window. I am definitely looking forward to hanging with some of you VC'ers during the weekend though
kidsmoke
You're driving?! I let Brennan talk me into it. Send vibes. They have to. Between the loads of beef jerky and recording equipment can you imagine what their baggage fees would be? Actually those might be the smallest parts of our baggage. We'll be on the road 14 days total, and it's insane how many things that requires. Or seems to require, anyway. One bag is nothing but potential automotive needs...fluids, jumper cables & the like. I'm an overpreparer, I admit. If nuclear holocaust should strike while we're on the road, all we have to do is set up the fold-out bomb shelter. Ok that part was an exaggeration. Since I don't post here much I suppose I'll just lurk around the edges of the meetup. My wife and daughter and I will be there but I doubt we'll be there in time for that 5-7 window. I am definitely looking forward to hanging with some of you VC'ers during the weekend though Looking forward to meeting you! Don't be shy, come say hello and introduce the wife and daughter. Talking about this is making it so much more real to me, after months of preparation!
Magnetized
Regarding the place for our VC get together, I'd like to suggest the outdoor bar right on the grounds of Mass MoCA, the one that overlooks one of the courtyards. Yes, it will be crowded, but we can spill out to the surrounding area if need be. And it will certainly be the most convenient place, in case people want to come and go. Any objections? M. (hristine
The closest I'm getting to Solid Sound is my pizza in the bellies of kidsmoke and progeny as they head east from Kansas City. Give sloppy kisses to viatroy who is volunteering this year. Have fun everyone!
kitkat
Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. Count me in. So glad this is happening! So, Friday between 5:00 and 7:00 at the bar at Mass MoCA that overlooks the courtyard, right? I'm sure that'll all make sense once I'm there.
