Not under rated at all. These things are wonderful and I don't think anybody would disagree.

The drumming of Jody Stephens.

His playing is so-often overlooked as being essential to the sound of Big Star (themselves, of course, so often overlooked by the public at large). But try to imagine ANY of their songs with any other drummer and it cannot be done. The way that he plays THROUGH the one. His choice of drums. Even the way that they are tuned. So very, very musical.

He deserves to be mentioned among the greatest.

The drumming of Jody Stephens.

Yes!

The drums have always stood out to me on those Big Star records too. His patterns and fills are always so perfect for the songs. I often have Jody in mind when coming up with drum parts for my own songs a: WWJD sorta thing.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I know what you mean. There were other drummers around at the time who had a similarly musical approach to pop and rock tunes, who could have served those songs well. I don't say this to take anything away from Jody. He was, and still is, a great musician and drummer.

It reminds me of people saying that Ringo isn't a good drummer. It's always meatheads who worship Neil Peart who say that. But imagine the Beatles with Neil Peart as their drummer. That'd be fucking terrible, and I say that as someone who likes Neil Peart.

Another one:

Bob Andrews the keyboard player from Brinsley Schwarz and also for The Rumour.

Nobody ever seems to mention this guy when talking about great keyboard players in rock history, but some of his parts were some of the greatest ever, and all of his parts were great. This being, perhaps my favorite rock keys part of all time:

The Cars

And Elliot Easton, in particular.

The songwriting of Dave Davies.

While I am, and shall forever remain a huge Ray Davies fan, Dave did contribute some pretty amazing songs to The Kinks' Katalogue.

"Death of a Clown"

"End of the Season"

"Funny Face"

"Love Me Till the Sun Shines"

"Mindless Child of Motherhood"

Three players . . .

1. The bass playing of Bruce Thomas (The Attractions);

2. David Hidalgo (Los Lobos, America's other greatest live band)

3. Angelo Moore (Fishbone), frontman extraordinaire (and the best theremin player you know)

And three great bands . . .

1. NRBQ

2. Ass Ponys

3. Bim Skala Bim (late, great Boston ska band)

OK, four bands . . .

4. Fastball

Talking Heads Remain in Light. I cannot even imagine when i hear once in a lifetime what it must have been like to buy that album and hear that for the first time.

I remember it quite clearly. And it was as mind blowing as you probably imagine.

Agree about Hidalgo, and I have Lobos as my answer. Was just having that very discussion today, a few hours ago, in the Lobos topic here.

NRBQ: Which version? I think Terry's the only one left now...

Any version prior to Terry Adams naming his solo band NRBQ. I'm sure the new guys play great, but come on.

you guys heard she and hims cover of ridin in my car?
