Wilco 7/21 - Camden New Jersey

Recommended Posts

Someone must have written down the full setlist please. I thought it was a very good show. I think they were given a 75 minute slot which they managed to stretch it seemed to about 90. Jeff noted they were trying to cram in as much music as possible, so less banter and tighter versions of the songs. Obvioulsy prefer a full on Wilco show for the extra near hour of music but a great opportunity to see them and i thought Doctor Dog was good (similar to Red Rocks) and Avett Brothers were also very good. Wilco tunes i remember but order not correct or complete:

Art of Almost, I might, Misunderstood, Laminated Cat, Born Alone, Hate it Here, Impossible Germany,Handshake Drugs, Box Full of Letters, Whole Love, Heavy Metal Drummer, Always in Love, Shot in the Arm, Im the Man Who Loves You, Dawned on Me, She's a Jar, the Late Greats

Here it was. I thought the show was really good but I agree would prefer the longer Wilco set. The way Jeff paces the sets is amazing and I thought you missed a little bit of that last night. Still a great time and I love that venue. Hate getting in and out of there, but its a nice place to see a show.

Art Of Almost

I Might

Misunderstood

Impossible Germany

Born Alone

Laminated Cat

(Loose Fur cover)

She's A Jar

Handshake Drugs

Hate It Here

Whole Love

Box Full Of Letters

I'm Always In Love

Heavy Metal Drummer

I'm the Man Who Loves You

Dawned On Me

A Shot in the Arm

Encore:

Dr Dog and Avett Brothers are the two best "opening" acts for Wilco I've seen. Wilco did manage to squeeze in more tunes than I expected they would be able to with the limited time. The crowd was huge. The covered section holds 7,000 and the lawn seemed almost full. Had to have been the most folks I've seen at a Wilco show that I've attended. The worst part was the drive down from Ct. on Friday. Over five hours for a usual three hour drive. Construction, accidents, lane closures, weekend get-a-way traffic and rain really took its' toll. Returned home this morning in under three hours. Just lucky I guess. GW Bridge and the Cross Bronx Exp. looked like a bitch going west this morning. Don't know how folks can drive that every day. I was sitting next to some elderly woman who told me she had seen the Avett Brothers 35 times. I asked her if she had ever seen Wilco and she said no. I told her she would become a Wilco fan by the end of the night. Unfortunately for her and her party, they left before Wilco came on and never returned. They didn't arrive until after Dr. Dog. It must be Avett or nothing for some. Their loss I guess.

My frustration level with these guys is sky high. Whole love released in September 2011. They finally get a around to Philly 10 months after it comes out and we get less than an hour and a half. Meantime, dc metro gets 3 full shows, ny gets 5, they'll end up doing 4 in berkley and the list goes on.

This isn't a new thing either. Ghost comes out in may '04, they make it to philly in june '05. SBS comes comes out in may '07, they don't get around to here until feb '08. Its not like philly is some small market that doesn't support music either. Every wilco show here sells out in 5 minutes and the crowds are always great but they've never done a nice 2 night stand here, just one and done eveytime, this time we get a 1/2 and done.

I thought last nights show sucked pacing wise, no flow, just trying to cram as many songs in to a small slot. It was actually funny seeing the roadies run out after each song for the quick guitar change.

Edit-PS, introducing box full of letters, Jeff says, "here's a song from our first record" and the crowd let's out a big cheer and Jeff goes, "really?" like he's shocked we know it. Yes Jeff, we may not be Chicago or NY or DC but we do know your stuff.

My brother-in-law and his wife live in Philly and they were also complaining that the shows sell out in minutes and they've never had a chance to see Wilco there. I told him I'd hook him up with Frontgate next time, but if it were me I'd just drive to DC to see those shows. A friend of mine once advised me never to miss the opportunity for a Wilco show, and I have to say that's advice I now live by!

I have, and i like traveling to shows but I'm at the point now where I'm like, fuck it. It nice to have some home games too. I used to live by that advice but not anymore.

it would be awesome to have the Avetts tour extensively with Wilco. I actually saw Dr. Dog open for My Morning Jacket @ Starr Hill years ago. I wasn't very impressed with them though. I would certainly be willing to give them another try, but I could take them or leave them.

Dr dog and avetts needed to start at 5:30 so wilco could get to play from 8:30 till 11:00

Had similar issues to many others.. Many people left before wilco finished which always pisses me off.

The set was rushed sure they played 17 songs but it wasn't paced great and seemed to be rushing through many tracks. Thought ITMWLY was rushed... I could be wrong.

The issue with me is ok it's a festival of sorts BUT there were probably 10,000 people who went just for wilco with a splattering of Avett and dr dog fans.. and all we get was 1.5 hours?

Good show enjoyed she's a jar and misunderstood etc but wilco need to schedule a show here in the album off period.. I would love a non album show at the Mann.. MMJ seem to Play almost every year album or not.. Wilco have a lot of fans here that want a full show or 2.

Dr Dog is not well suited to play a place that big. They put on one hell of an energetic show. I've been lucky enough to see them with 100 people in a tiny bar, and a handful of times at the Electric Factory. I wish they could have played longer.

I didn't see any of the Avett set. Not that I dislike them, but I was there for Wilco and Dr Dog.

A couple who left after Avetts gave me and my pal their pit tickets, so I was in the 5th row for Wilco. I just saw them last weekend at Forecastle, and they did the same thing there with rushing through the setlist and playing as much music as possible. Sure, I wish they were allotted more time, but I appreciate the effort the band put in to give us all they could, especially since they really were breaking down the set after "Shot in the Arm" but came out to play "Late Greats". very pleased with last nights show.

i had an issue with the rushed nature of the show... wilco should have demanded 2 hours or just play their own show at the mann or maybe 2 shows at the electric factory.. but i was there for just pretty much wilco even though i like dr dog a little.

I can understand being bummed the band hasn't played a full show in Philly in a couple of years. (The Evening With show was great, though!) But as for last night's show, I can't complain. It was a festival, so the setlist is what it is. Wilco had a 75-minute slot; I'm not sure how much leeway bands have to demand fest sets of a certain length. Jeff joked about trying to fit as many songs in as they could, like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They played a lot of the better-known songs that get enthusiastic reactions from a wide range of people, heavy on the album they're promoting, and it was cool that they threw in "She's a Jar." I don't think I could ever get tired of "Laminated Cat." I didn't notice songs sounding particularly rushed, but I may just be unobservant.

I think the majority of the crowd was there because of Wilco, but I don't think I'd agree that there were only "a splattering" (EW!) of Dr. Dog and Avett Brothers fan. Dr. Dog is from Philly, and everyone around me seemed to be into their set - lots of people dancing and singing along. As for the Avett Brothers, the front rail appeared even more crammed full than it was for Wilco, and there were lots of people shouting song requests. I enjoyed both bands, but I always love the live energy of the Avetts, and find their sincerity endearing. I do wish Wilco could have played a longer set, but I'm not sorry the other bands had longish sets themselves.

Never heard a note of the Avett's before last night, thought they were terrific, best thing to come out of the night.

My beef is not that they were squeezed by festival constraints, its the chronic short changing philly gets by that band. If they did a 2 night run in the fall and came back for the festival in the summer, no problem. I thought we turned a corner getting that evening with show but it seems we didn't. This has been a long simmering issue with me that just boiled over last night. I just can't understand why NY gets 5 shows, DC gets 3, philly gets 90 minutes. The only answer i can come up with is they don't see this as a key market for them which is fine, I'll adjust the time I devote to them. I know I must come off as being a baby but I have 2 young kids, cannot travel like a i used to and would like to see one of my favorite bands do some of the killer sets they do without having to plan a road trip all of the time.

And I really did feel the show felt rushed. Songs like Impossible Germany and Handshake Drugs just felt like they were getting through them just to get to the next 2.

I ended up leaving before the encore because Jeff said there would be no encore, at least I caught the first ferry.

try being in australia when you get them every 4 years or so... for that mattter any band you like every 4 year or so.

I think philly is a key market for wilco.. it's big with bands like pearl jam, MMJ etc and wilco is no different but the band doesn't seem to think that way.. They would almost sell out the mann center or 2 nights at the electric factory no trouble. I always thought it was a venue issue but that's just an excuse i guess. I saw them in wilmington in 2009 but that was my last full wilco show.. need to see them proper soon!

I thought Dr. Dog was great for that venue. I thought they were a Philly band? The crowd loved them from what I could see. They have a new fan in me. Avetts played a very energetic show, they were good but the songs didn't really do anything for me. I don't know how to put my finger on it but they are not very catchy tunes IMO. I expected more of an Old Crow Medicine Show catchy song kind of style. Their songs all sounded pretty much the same to me. Hadn't heard them before either. I thought Wilco needed to keep the energy level up when they first came out with something like Via Chicago. I think that would have rocked the place probably keeping some of those Avett Bros/ Dog fans in their seats rather than leaving early which I noticed happening. There were a lot of empty seats about 3/4 of the way into Wilco's set. Heard the encore in the parking lot. We took off as well after Tweedy said no encore tonight. That's ok, we were one of the first cars out of the lot. Heard Late Greats many times in the past. On to Terminal 5 Wed.

Obviously people in places like austrailia or any small town in the US for that matter have to deal with not many shows or travel etc. but that's the way it goes, you live in a small town, you don't get the big names. It's just frustrating that this particular band, one of my favs in their prime choose to drive by us all the time. It's funny how many bands have had such longevity here. The Dead played the spectrum more times than any venue, Bruce and Billy Joel have banners in the wells Fargo center commerating over 50 philly sell outs for each. Just sucks that this particular band doesn't share the enthusiasm.

Drove 8 hours from VT to see this show. Loved every minute of it. All 3 bands had amazing energy--thought the crowd was great. If people choose to leave early...oh well! More space for me!

Getting out of Camden is definitely no small feat. I found a small lot a few blocks away charging half of what the main lot charged. Was telling the guy next to me about it and he warned me to be careful on my way back to my car, or, as he put it, "Don't get Camdened." I got to my car safely, and was out of town within 10 minutes.

Excited to welcome Wilco to Vermont on Sunday!!

Fully agree with opinion re: DD. I've seen them live three times in small venues and they really, really impressed.

From my vantage point in Section 104, there seemed to be more Avetts fans than Wilco fans. The sound quality in Section 104 during DD and Wilco was very poor - we couldn't hear Nels very much :( But for some reason, the Avetts sounded very good in comparison.

I went in with the expectation that it would be a festival show and that we would not get the full Wilco experience. I was not disappointed (except for the poor sound way off to the side - next time only the middle seats or pit!).

One thing I forgot to mention: the crowd was great! For the first time in eight Wilco shows that I've seen, there were no chatty cathy's and there was a very pleasant vibe everywhere I went. I think Philly has a lot of love for Wilco if they decide to come back for a longer show at a smaller venue.

Sparky dont give up on the avetts just yet. old Crow couldnt spit shine their boots and every song is totally different. tough to judge any band that you havent heard before in a venue that big. they take some studying like wilco

You might be right but I'm giving Dr Dog and Deer Tick most of my listening attention right now. My son got the last three tickets to see them (Deer Tick) in Newport right after the Wilco show Friday at a gig down the street. It's going to be a long night trying to keeping up with these 25 year olds...

They should have bagged Dr. Dog and went with the Avetts and Wilco playing equal sets. It was obvious that the Avetts had nearly as big a following as Wilco with people in the rear mildly engaged in the Dr. Dog show.

Sound system was brutal. By far the worst sounding Wilco or Avett Bros show I have ever seen. Just a gelatinous lump of bass. The Avetts even had massive feedback during one of their songs.

Won't be going back to that place ever again. Give me the Mann or somewhere in Lehigh Valley, please.

Agreed. I was telling my wife how lucky we were to see the Avetts two years earlier in a small theater. It's like you are family it's so close and personal. Seemed the Avetts were a bit freaked out by the giant venue.
