i'm only sleeping
Then it's Leroy. Leroy sang the deeper (Jay) harmonies on the 01-03 tours. --Mike Thank you Mike!. And, as Calvino says above, this thread is a gem to explore and find fantastic shows. And thanks, Owl&Bear!
mpolak21
You're very welcome guys. I have always had a real love for this era, probably because I'm a keyboard nerd and I love Leroy Bach's playing. It's interesting to hear the sound of the lineup evolve over this period and when the very end of the YHF tour shows (fall 2003) rolled around, they were really as good as they'd ever been. The best sounding boot/performance from this particular period is here: http://wilcoarchive.com/wilco%2020030904/. It's got a little bit of everything. Early versions of AGIB songs they were workshopping. Poor Places-Reservations-I am Trying To Break Your Heart-War on War transformed into a mind-blowing suite. Quasi guesting with extra percussion on California Stars and Handshake Drugs. And all presented in glorious soundboard (though Leroy and Mike are mixed a little high). Highly recommended for those who haven't checked it out yet.

choo-choo-charlie
Yes, thanks very much for the rec. This is fantastic! Love this version of Handshake Drugs. Wait until you get to Laminated Cat. And Cars Can't Escape!
kidsmoke
I don't see it as anti-Nels. It's more of a reminder to me of the uniqueness of the four-piece, a short-lived lineup itching to get out and play new material to enthusiastic, hungry audiences. I've got 10/5/01 playing in the car now. It's great. Yes, nicely put.

choo-choo-charlie
When y'all are done with that one, grab the show from Penn's Landing that same year -- June 20-something I believe.

And double ditto on the above comment about Handshake Drugs... I love these early versions. I really dig this show from earlier in 2003 in Pittsburgh (I know I've seen others mention it in other threads but I'm not sure it's been mentioned here yet - http://wilcoarchive.com/wilco%2020030621/ - damn good sound. one of my favorite versions of Ashes to start the show off - plus an awesome early Muzzle of Bees and Spiders and Kicking Television. I really like the versions of How To Fight Lonliness and Misunderstood, as well.
ih8music
I've had (and loved) that 2003 Pittsburgh show for a while now, but this Eugene/McDonald Theater show is awesome! Thanks for the heads-up, bigtime! (though Leroy and Mike are mixed a little high)yeah, but hearing all the various fuzz/blip/bloop effects up front is kinda cool, too... nalafej
I will also recommend that Pittsburgh show - really fun to hear those versions of the Ghost songs.
mpolak21
As long as there is interest I will continue recommending gig from this era. I'll try to only do shows that Owl has and if I can remember something in my collection that I really like that isn't on Owl, I'll try to get to him. One of my favorite recent Wilco songs is I Might, which features a sample from the immortal Stooges track TV Eye. It's a song that's been on the Wilcos mind's for awhile as they covered it in a 2002 show in Amsterdam. http://wilcoarchive....o 20020526 SBD/ The sound is great, setlist is typical to that era, but the YHF tracks and She's a Jar and A Shot in the Arm are particularly great and the encore kicks all sorts of ass. Let me know what you think. Enjoy! --Mike
