Among my circle of friends, the Oatmeal comic seems to be a big reason for the visible backlash this year. People may have already had these opinions, but nothing beats the ease of clicking on "share."

Yep, this is why I posted that. My feed is full of people not only clicking share but enjoying posting a good, solid rant against the man and how it is despicable that children are taught about Columbus in school. Really hyperbolic stuff.

A friend posted this article in response, and I don't particularly know why we need any holiday in the first place but I do like the point that a kindler, gentler genocide isn't something to celebrate.  In addition to the fact that it won't ever happen, I also don't see an Indigenous Persons Day to be any less likely to come off as "let's celebrate the race we killed off!"

To be honest this year this is the only place I have contact with that Columbus has been brought up.

Was he a homicidal maniac? Not even close. Did he help open the door for others to follow to impose their will on this hemisphere? Absolutely. Would the same things have happened had Columbus never existed? With out a doubt yes. In fact the only difference in iur lives today would be place names and the name of the day off.

Same with me.

I think the point of cartoon was that Columbus, who by all historical accounts was a bastard and his "discovery" really wasn't much of anything, has a Federal Holiday.  And that he his on par with the likes of MLK jr and Lincoln.  So I think that is problem.  I am not sure if it is backlash or what, but there seems to be a growing movement to end Columbus day.

So guess to bring it full circle, knowing that Columbus was just an asshole, is it appropriate that we have a federal holiday named after him?

I'm guessing the shutdown ends at 11pm EST, +/- 30 minutes, the night before the default.

The whole thing is a fucking joke.

Boehner is done after this, but at the same token with such a vocal and seemingly power minority in the GOP (the TEA party), who would want his job?

The TEA party is the worst thing to happen to American politics in the last 30 years.
