Ghost of Electricity
When they were younger "Casino Queen" was a favorite, and "Reckoning" a proud father moment happened when my older son rushed to turn off Beethoven and put in Velvet Underground (he was 7 or 8 at the time) another was when my younger son (the 3 or 4) asked to hear "country music" by which he meant the Harry Smith Anthology. Then they saw Iron Man, and it's been nothing but ACDC. Until recently, when Kiss became acceptable. They're young, they have time to discover, but I'm getting a bit sick of Back in Black. A glimmer of hope earlier today when my older son (almost 12 now) asked about The Who. What about you? Are your kids listening to things that you find agreeable? Lammycat
Nope. And I don't care. We take them to plenty of jam-band-y type shows and play tones of that type music around the pad (in addition to old school Rap and Disco and other shit we enjoy) but they have little to no interest in it. Although, last Saturday I woke up at 6 fucking a.m. to the sound of Phish's Farmhouse being cranked at very high volume by my 6 yr old as he was bopping his head and tapping his feet with the 'fridge door open helping himself to a bagel. I couldn't really be too mad at that.
John Smith
Yes and no. Their tastes are evolving, but they are teenagers. And that is to be expected.

Atticus
my step son has music on every minute of the day that he's not in school or asleep. it's usually Talking Heads or They Might Be Giants. I'm just fine with that.
choo-choo-charlie
My 10-month-old really can't make any of these decisions right now, but we skipped the whole "Baby Bach" or "Mozart for Babies" thing and play our usual stuff around the house and in the car. Wilco, The Beatles, etc. I also play guitar and sing to her a lot. My brother's 10-year-old loves Wilco, always asks to have it put on in the car. His 8-year-old loves Katy Perry. Lammycat
Funny, because Katy Perry is a lot like kids: much better seen than heard.
Winston Legthigh
Whenever our 10 month old is having trouble taking his afternoon nap, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme always does the trick. He quiets down to listen to the music, and then he's out like a light pretty quickly. Works like a charm.

Lammycat
Not bad, Winston. Makes me re-think the ineffectiveness of the spanking tactic I used on my kids when then were that age.

marino13
I've been very lucky that my 9 and 3 yr old daughters like a lot of the stuff I listen to. My oldest is a budding piano singer/songwriter who wants to be like Regina Spektor someday and just learned to play "Samson" by ear. My youngest was calmed as a baby by playing Radiohead In Rainbows - From the Basement and by singing Fake Plastic Trees. As far as Wilco, the oldest loves Sky Blue Sky and Walken, and the youngest is more a fan of The Whole Love. They like pop radio stuff as well, but I let them get their fill (as long as the songs are appropriate) so they don't rebel against my music. Some of it was systematic on my part. I played the kid sounding songs from my collection (Good Day Sunshine, I am the Walrus, Hotel Yorba, I Turn My Camera On, A-Punk, The Go! Team, etc.), got them hooked and then branched out from there.
I Might
My two and half year old has always liked Springsteen, particularly late '70's stuff. Lately she's really liked Wilco (The Album), especially Wilco (The Song). It's been awesome catching her around the house singing "Wilco will love you, baby." I was very proud the other day when my wife said she asked to listen to Wilco in her car, rather than the usual top 40 Country radio she listens to.
mountain bed
Well, all my kids love Wilco, they've all seen them many many times. As far as favorites go, the oldest (daughter, 28) is really big on Tom Petty, the middle kid (son, 25) is a HUGE Pearl Jam and grunge freak, and the youngest (daughter, 22) has the most eclectic taste of any of them. Sigur Ros and Henry Rollins Band are among her faves.
calvino
My four year old wanted to listen to Iron Maiden this morning - which irks the hell out of his mother, but so it goes....
