Good thing I had to show my driver's license at my polling place yesterday. Somehow that didn't stop the election official from telling me I was voting at the wrong location and attempting to turn me away, despite the fact that the record he had called up on his computer matched the name, but not the voter ID#, birthdate, or address on my ID, which he was holding in his fucking hand. We called the supervisor over and sorted things out.

I continue to make sure every election I take my ID in with me to the polling place.

In voting for well over 11 years at the same place I have Never been asked to show my ID.

Kind of shocking as I would be pissed if someone had stolen my right to vote, by getting there ahead and voting with my name & address.

Outside of that I'm actually happy with the checks and balances of a newly elected Republican Governor in our largely Democratic state. ( MA )

Also was happy to vote for both on same sheet Democrats in local election and Republican* for Governor.

Prior Republican Governors have been forced to be a bit more Liberal and Progressive in our state.

One in fact presented a gun bill that was past into law making our gun law the toughest in the country at the time.

Anyone read Matt Taibbii's new article in Rolling Stone about the cover up on Wall Street after the crash? I'm halfway thru it now. I will always hold it against Obama and his administration that theyĀ didn't prosecute Wall Streeters and the heads of the big banks for their crimes against America. Shit, we're worried about ISIL and ebola? We have financial terrorists living hereĀ and destroying America every single day.

We lived through George W Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon; we will live through this too.Ā

Ā

But you know the policies of GWB, Ronald Reagn, and Nixon are down right socialist compared to what this current GOP believes. Ā

The Pope is more pro science and equality than this lot. Ā

Haven't read it yet, but I agree w/ your assessment here. It's sad that we won't prosecute criminals because of their political & economic power. Yet, that's the world we live in.

This is precisely the point. When we pass legislation that limits people's freedom in order to protect ourselves, we have to be sure that it is a worthy exchange for a legitimate risk. In some districts many citizens lost the ability to vote in order to protect people like you and I from a situation that doesn't really happen.

Please elaborate.

Is there really any elaboration required? Millions of people who knowingly broke the law by entering the country illegally -- and broke still more laws by using stolen identities and Social Security numbers -- are going to be allowed to stay in the country after a stroke of the president's pen. Yes, it's a kick in the teeth, especially for all the people who have come to the country legally.

Ā

The fact that the president waited to make the proclamation until after the midterm elections in his second term shows just how unpopular it is among the members of his own party.

I know a few people who came legally from Mexico. They don't feel like their teeth are being kicked in. That was done by INS. Arbitrarily scheduled meetings in cities miles away, delays caused by incompetent officials. Feom my point of view, we need these laborers and then bitch about them when they show up.

Sure they broke the law coming here, but as far as I'm concerned it's on par with something like speeding, not homicide.

Ā

And besides, deporting all 12-20 million illegals in this country is not only unrealistic, it's damn immoral.

Ā

I'm happy that the president took this action... and if republicans have such a problem with it, then they should pass a damn bill. There's been one sitting on Boehners desk for a year and a half.

The fact is that this country's rhetoric on illegals has been in bad faith for decades. Ā The reason our "laws keep getting their teeth kicked out" are that they're obsolete. Ā They've been impossible to successfully enforce for so long, that now they stand in the shadow of the fact that the people breaking them are essential to our economy.

Ā

So many south-western conservatives that come from money can stand like the eagle from the muppets, saluting in front of stars and stripes, while these darned illegals manicure their lawn, replace their roof, and do the drywall on their basement remodel project.
