It wasn't bad. My 6 year old daughter asked why Bob was singing a Jerry tune during Althea. Looks like I've got father of the year all wrapped up.

Awesome!

Joe Russo's Almost Dead

Higher Ground

Burlington, VT

2/5/15

Thought I would just post this on the Grateful Dead thread instead of the live shows page so it would reach the most interested audience on the board...

I was Joe Russo's Almost Dead last night and, well, skip Chicago and get yourselves to one these gigs if you can :-)  This was my first time seeing these guys live and was completely blown away.  They play the music of the Grateful Dead, but are not a cover band.  I am pretty burnt on all things post-Dead, but this band is really breathing new life into the Grateful Dead song book.  Everyone of these guys is a monster player in their own right, and they are very clearly enjoying themselves on stage.  Hamilton and Metzger are superb guitar players who compliment each others style and skills.  Marco Benevento (a personal favorite of mine) was in rare form as well bashing away at his keyboard and synth.  That said, I was most impressed with Russo and Driewitz - these two are an extremely powerful rhythm section who sound nothing like Phil, Mickey and Billy -- and I mean that in a good way.  Mostly, these guys are simply celebrating the songs of the Dead and playing with them with amazing passion and originality.  Go see them!!!

Here's the Set List as played:

The Music Never Stopped>

Scarlet Begonias>

Bertha

Estimated Prophet>

Crazyfingers>

Mr. Charlie>

Brown Eyed Women

Space>

Help on the Way>

Slipknot>

Franklin's Tower>

He's Gone> (w/Caution and Slipknot Teases)

Truckin' (w/Caution and Other One Teases)

The Other One (w/Caution and Slipknot Teases)

So psyched for tonight at the Paradise!

:lol

I have often said that the rhythm section was the weak link in the Dead, but wow. Maybe it wasn't meant that way...

I think this came the wrong way :uhoh  Phil, Mickey and Billy are terrific - I loved hearing those guys play during my time seeing the band (mostly 82 to 85).  I just meant that Russo/Driewitz had a sound all ofg their own - and I liked it a lot!!!

That show was AMAZING! What a band. Russo totally rules, incredible drummer.

Anyone else get and listen to the new Dave's Pick yet? I am almost finished with the last disc.

It's good, but I hope no one makes the same mistake I made: getting overexcited by all the breathless hyperbole on the dead.net forum. Man, I think there are still people out there feeling the effects of doses they ate in 1987. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's '74, of course it's not a crap show. But man oh man, people, it ain't the the ark of the covenant. It's not going to surpass 8/27/72.

It's not really fair to compare almost anything to the Creamery Benefit show. That's a Top 10 show on anyone's list!

I knew what I was getting into with this show, cause I had it on cassette around '89-'90. It IS good, but they've released many other '74 shows I thought were better. For my money June is the peak of that year - Des Moines, Louisville, Miami, Providence, Boston - MY GOD that's some awesome shit.

Get it for the Dark Star > Dew, and the Playin. Is it just me, or does that Playin have more in common with Fall '72 than Fall '73? It seems more frenetic, less jazzy.

Yep, I've already got some of those shows from June: Des Moines, Louisville, Miami, plus a few highlights from other dates. No wonder I was a bit underwhelmed!

Been digging the new Jose Gonzalez album. Similar to his previous solo stuff, but I like the sound.

Also heard some good songs by these bands that I want to investigate further. Can anyone point me in the right direction with: Sun Kill Moon, Woods, and Hiss Golden Messenger?

Thanks

Been delving into some '72 stuff, in anticipation of the next DaP from Academy of Music. Checking this deadessays.blogspot.com site led me to this quote from Jerry about rap:

“Rap is not music – it’s talking… It’s talking in meter, it’s got rhyme and it has meter, it has rhythm; it’s not music. It’s okay, there’s nothing wrong with it, I have no problem with it, it just isn’t music. And people who get to be great at rap are not great musicians, they’re just great at rap – there’s no road from rapping into music…

Love that guy. :lol

:lol My exact thoughts on rap! Also agree with Jerry when, speaking of heavy metal, he said something as 'it simply has no sense'

He says out right that he's not planning on soloing and that there is too much of it in the jamband scene.  Also, he notes that Weir says that they probably won't know what they're playing until 5 minutes before showtime.  This does not bode well for the shows.

Why does it not bode well? I took it as soloing in the vein of  a lot of Heavy Metal acts that have that one spot where it's like "solo goes here". Also, with the extensive practicing and the overall professional nature of the musicians involved, I'm confident that 5 minutes is plenty of warning to perform as experts. My $0.02.

As long as they rehearse all the songs they plan to play - guess it doesn't matter if they don't know what song the are going to play.

Does anyone know anyone who mail ordered and still waiting on a response. Heard from a couple who got rejected (and all was filled out right) - couple who not heard either way.

Really hoping I get lucky on the day of sale - regardless, I am sure they will be shown on the web --- If they can pull off showing it at movie theaters, bars, or clubs, that would be even more fun.

I am sure most of you already seen the article, but below is WSJ link about the mail order -- "It's magic!"

Someone on the GD 80s facebook page had their money orders cashed for the Chicago shows. First one that I've heard of...
