mountain bed
This comes quickly to mind: Steve Hunter's playing on the Intro to Sweet Jane on Rock and Roll Animal. Oh hell yes that's a great one!
Blackberry Rust
Steven Malkmus: Real Emotional Trash Nice to see some love for one of the most underrated guitarists on the planet. If I'd had enough room, his work on "No More Shoes" or "Out Of Reaches" would be on my list.
Mr. Heartbreak
A few more Zappa recommendations: Toad-O Line (aka On the Bus) - One of Frank's best known examples of what he dubbed "xenochrony," where tracks from one recording are combined with a different one. The original solo can be found elsewhere but this rhythm section really makes it. Po-Jama People - What can I say about this fabulous elixir? This is some of the most unhinged studio FZ soloing of all time. Muffin Man - Tacked onto a studio track of vocals, this got big air play on AOR stations in New England back in the good old days. Dupree's Paradise, 5/8/74 - Probably the most essential unreleased Frank track, it clocks in at nearly 37 minutes; his guitar solo runs from about 22:59 to 35:34; definitely a must-have. Halloween - The Halloween album is worth seeking out for Ancient Armaments, and an 18-minute Black Napkins, but the real goodies are still unreleased. Download 10/31/78 (aka The Big One, Frank's longest show ever) for all the uncut duels with L. Shankar: Thirteen, Little House, Watermelon, and Packard. Essential. tinnitus photography
this is a lot harder than i thought.... i am sure i'll miss a ton but here's one to start (the entire song is a fretboard frenzy of activity) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg1i6Y-ybTw here's another one, esp at the 26:45 mark... i love the fuzz that breaks down into the brooding part that erupts two minutes later. is this the first mention of a solo that's by a woman?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsKgltFHIEY
Chez
Since the thread title is "favorite" and not "best," I'm going to add Bob Stinson's guitar on The Replacements "Answering Machine."
uncool2pillow
Since the thread title is "favorite" and not "best," I'm going to add Bob Stinson's guitar on The Replacements "Answering Machine." I thought Paul was the only guitarist on that one, like Within Your Reach. Could be completely wrong though. It is fantastic!
Chez
^^^ Paul, Bob, whomever. All I know is that I love it!
