Was it "Effigy" by Creedence (covered by Uncle Tupelo too). They encored with it when I saw them in Philly. Superb performance - a real hoot and holler. They also played a track written by their new piano player, friend of Ben's from childhood, called "Older", I think. Great track - would love to hear that on the next album. Older:

"Thank you Philadelphia! You sure know how to treat a band!" Last words spoken on a Philly stage by Jeff Tweedy - Penn's Landing, 2005 Seeing that setlist again reminds me how excellent that night on the landing in the summer was. Theologians --> Always In Love --> ITMWLY --> Spiders to close the main set was fantastic.

cares the least of all Wilco albums what you think of it -
Is that Tony Margherita at 2:56 and again at 3:02?

The first time I heard What Light as it appears on SBS I cringed at Jeff bending the note on "just sing...what you feeeeeEEEEEEL". Has anybody else noticed this? I thought it might be an intentional flub to drive home the "don't let anyone say it's wrong" bit but he doesn't seem to attempt to recopy the sound when he performs the song live. Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere.

I totally hear where Snow Ships is coming from. In my experience every Wilco album is unlike the last and you have to sit with it for a couple dozen listens before it really reveals itself to you. In a lot of ways I think that's the true test of good music...does it get better everytime you listen to it (up to a point of course). Pre-YHF I don't think Wilco made a song I would consider boring. Some were less memorable than others but I rarely skipped songs even on the sixtieth listen through. In 2002 I would have agreed that Jeff Tweedy was tapped directly into The Source and he could d

I feel better thinking of Shake It Off's potential as being "sacrificed", rather than "wasted".

Questions re: Obama, 1. What's Obama like in a tough election? He's never had a strong challenger in any race. We know how tough the Clintons are when they get smacked in the mouth; only the Bushes come back stronger. Obama isn't battletested; how tough is he? 2. Can he beat the expectations game? In the early caucuses/primaries in Iowa, NH, Nevada and SC, a win isn't always a win. Sometimes you can win by finishing a surprising third; it's all about beating expectations. What will Barack's be? Does he have to knock off Hillary in Iowa? NH? What will a win for him be? Hillary has

2004/05 at MSG still goes down as one of the best nights of my life from this millenium... anyone got any dirt on if and where the band will be playing this time around?

Spiders became known as the "Clock is Ticking" song among a group of us working in Portland, OR during the 2004 elections. We got the go-ahead to begin a paid canvass operation on a Monday and needed to go from no one to 50 bodies on the streets knocking on doors by the end of the week. Leaving the office around midnight to go poster the city with jobs flyers I popped AGIB into the van's CD player and the syncopated drumming and jangly guitar fit the mood perfectly: prowling the dark, wet streets of Portland, feeling the pressure to produce and cover a significant portion of the city with f

Sorting my iTunes in descending order of Time I found these goodies: Herbie Mann - Memphis Underground (In a letter where he laments the state of music in the mid-70s, Hunter Thompson remarked this was the best piece of music to come out that decade.) Tell them Band of Horses really really wants to do a project with them. Then get Band of Horses on the phone and tell them the same thing. Name some studio and have both bands agree to meet the other one there. When both bands show up and confusion ensues, act all innocent and suggest that maybe it was "the muses" making some crank calls and oh dip, you just remembered you have some Coronas on ice in the back room and why doesn't everybody just chill for awhile and maybe jam a bit? Then press record in the engineer booth and relax with a frosty Corona. Easy peasy. -
What have you done to the mirror? What have you done to the floor? Can't I go nowhere without you? Can't I leave you alone any more? I know you don't think much of me But someday you'll understand Wait'll you learn how to talk baby I'll show you how smart I am A quitter never wins A winner never quits When the going gets tough The tough get going Maybe you don't know how to walk baby Maybe you can't talk none either Maybe you never will, baby But I'll always love you I'll always love you

Here I come, so you better break North, As I stride, my gold chains glide back and forth. I care nothing bout you, and that's evident. All I love's my dope and dead presidents. Sound crazy? Well it isn't. The ends justifies the means, that's the system. I learned that in school then I dropped out, Hit the streets, checked a grip, and now I got clout. I had nothing, and I wanted it. You had everything, and you flaunted it. Turned the needy into the greedy, With cocaine, my success came speedy. Got me twisted, jammed into a paradox. Every dollar I get, another brother drops. Maybe that's the pla

Wow - you stole those two right off the top of my stack. I'm also a big fan of the leering "And yoouuuu, just what do you DO, anyway?" from SYLN. And: "But I ain't a judge, you don't have to be nice to me But please tell that To your friend in the cowboy hat You know he keeps on sayin' ev'rythin' twice to me..." Love the scorned and surly Bob. "You say my kisses aren't like his, I won't tell you why that is..." Great threads today people!
