My understanding is that song was written about smoking the pot. If that is indeed true, I find it makes that song much more interesting.

I could not agree more. I'm in the middle of having my first album mixed and mastered/"produced". One of my good friends is taking on this task for me. I trust his judgment. He worked in the studio where Beck (among others) recorded his last album with Nigel Godrich and learned some very cool techniques to incorporate. He's also a very well-versed audio engineer. Still, the artist in me cringes just a bit when things get changed. It's always different to build something from the ground up, as opposed to just seeing it when it's done.

I think "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something" are two of the best songs ever written. I don't have any idea how much impact the other three Beatles had on the formulation and direction of a song written by one individual. Having said that, I wonder how different/better a lot of Harrison's (back)catalog would have been with full-Beatles support. For solo material, Harrison strikes me as a great album writer. Lennon and McCartney seem like they wrote great hits, IMHO.

Is it me, or does a producer have the ability to make a (relatively) weak album great? Or also cripple a great album by changing things too much? For those of you that have put out your own albums, what was the communication/decision process like with a (your) producer/mixer/mastering person? i.e. Not using certain percussion in places, stripping a song down, etc.?

For my fellow football fans: What does everyone think about coaches being able to call a timeout right as a field goal try is snapped? A perfect example was Monday night's game, Dallas vs. Buffalo. Seriously, imagine if a team kicked the winning field goal in a Super Bowl, only to have a late timeout called. The field goal gets tried again and is missed: riots in the streets. I think only players on the field should be allowed to call timeouts.

I seriously got a lump in my throat during that part.
