  1. http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=516400 9.18 - 9.20 run is still seeding on bt.etree. Just caught the last bit of the 9.19 Dark Star on XM. The whole "why don't you go home and Fuck somebody" is pretty classic. Especially how the "Get Together" song comes right back in.
  2. http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/grat...campaign=081219 Wolfgang released the second set of 4.29.71 this weekend. I am pretty sure everyone has this in their collection and it is part of the Ladies and Gentlemen disks, I think this show was my first Dead boot. I always loved these versions of Second That Emotion and In the Midnight Hour. Johnny B Goode is really rocking too, esp. Pig's organ playing.
  3. Have you been to Elastic? ( http://www.elasticrevolution.com/index.htm ) I am not sure if you have to be 21 to get in or not. They do not serve booze, but it is BYOB. Anyway they have great gigs on Thursday nights. Vandermark 5 is doing three Tuesday night shows in January.
  4. 30th works for me too...I think I will be off on the 31st, so I will have no excuse. Only time I saw, I think, Freeman play was at the Green Mill a good few Decembers ago with Peterson. It was great, but the Green Mill crowd where extra noisy and ornery that night. My brother was literally screamed at by a well dressed patron because he placed his drink down on her table for a second so he could put his coat on. It was good and fun to watch the two old guys blow, though. I have never ventured down to the New Apartment, which is ridiculous since I live down here on the Southside.
  5. Sorry Lou, I did not make the show. We should start a petition to have these shows start earlier. I get up at 4:15 for work during the week, so it takes extra motivation to get out to see these shows, usually a show like the DKV Trio does the trick. Anyway, did you or anyone else make it to the Hideout?
  6. I did not make it to Zerang's Birthday bash, but I have seen Mats Gustafsson play a half dozen times or so and he is definitely worth checking out. Is it worth a four-hour Drive? Its hard to say because he plays in Chicago a lot so I never had to drive that far to see him play. But if it was the only opportunity to see him perform, I would take a drive and catch him. The Thing just put out a box set (((THE THING "NOW AND FOREVER" (4 DISC BOX SET))). A DVD is part of the set and Thurston Moore sits in with The Thing for a long extended tune. It is a total shredding by all four members involve
  7. A month or so ago Bt-Etree posted the Grateful Dead - 1968 Project. Since it was only in 3 parts, downloading the whole year was manageable. (my connection/computer isn't the quickest). The Mickey and Heartbeats shows were included in the project. Though the set lists do not vary much throughout the year, I enjoy listening to these shows. Especially since i have not heard much of the shows from 1968 before.
  8. A reminder (bump) for the DKV Trio show at the Hideout tomorrow.
  9. http://destination-out.com/?paged=2 The above is a link to a blog. An entry by Nicole Mitchell regarding Braxton is there, that is pretty interesting. Listening to Berlin/Switzerland Concerts reminds me a lot of the Vandermark 5. I know Braxton is a huge influence on Vandermark; it's very evident listening to these cd's. Braxton's contrabass clarinet playing in this set, thus far has been the highlight for me. I haven't heard that horn played very much (if ever) and it sounds great, especially on Opus 40(P), where he duets with Abrams. Anyway it has been a very enjoyable experience, t
  10. Saw him play solo on a small side stage at the Chicago Blues Fest about 5 years ago and was completely impressed. I always wanted to catch another of his shows but haven't gotten around to it. My first introduction of him was on a Rolling Stones tribute album, Paint it Blue (House of Blues production). His rendition of Sway and Moonlight Mile are incredible. (the whole album is actually great). Does he play Sway or Moonlight Mile (or any Stones' covers) at the shows?
  11. Checking the The Jazz Loft this morning reminded me of ECM and Oregon discussion from this thread. The site has a sale going on for forty ECM Reissues. http://www.jazzloft.com/c-24-touchstone.aspx
  12. Just got the set on Friday. Will start listening to the Arista stuff this afternoon. As a precursor to the Arista listening, I bought For Alto and 3 Compositions of New Jazz on the Delmark Label. Just one listening, thus far of both, but the For Alto disc is really great. The sound/production of both discs are also great - it sounds like you in the room with him playing. On For Alto, I also found it interesting that Braxton dedicated each piece to a person, something that Ken Vandermark does with all his pieces that he writes. Anyway looking forward to getting into the box set...and when
  13. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/03/arts/mus...tml?_r=1&hp The NY Times has a rather nice obit. The comments are worth reading, too.
  14. Okay, just placed my order. You gotta love the Holiday season. You can always rationalize purchases as being a gift for yourself. Plus, we are supposed to be stimulating the economy, right? But like I stated previously, Braxton was always someone I wanted to listen to more closely.
  15. I thought about buying this set when it came out a few months ago, since I only have one Braxton disk: it being the (Victoriaville) 1992 disk. He is definitely someone I always wanted to delve into to. I am afraid it will open up a can of worms of buying a lot more of his stuff if I get this set...he has so many recordings. But the set does look very interesting.
  16. I haven't heard about Drake's B-day party. I did notice on Zerang's website that Zerang and Drake are playing at the MCA in a puppet show http://www.mcachicago.org/performances/per...tail.php?id=375. That may interesting. Also later in December Zerang and Drake will be doing their annual Winter Solstice shows. I never have made it to one of these shows. Every year I say I'm going to catch one of them. Perhaps this year.
  17. The DKV Trio show will be at the Hideout - if you click Dec 17, 2008 on his tour page it shows the venue. Tomorrow night should be another great show at the Hideout. Wednesdays November 12 9:30 Immediate Sound presents a special event Michael Zerang's 50th Birthday Celebration featuring set I The Thing Mats Gustafsson saxophones / Ingebrigt H
  18. I was on the floor, dead center about 40 or so feet from the stage, and I thought the sound was great, especially for a rink.
  19. I was able to catch the Kalamazoo show on Saturday. The venue (Wings Stadium) is great for a hockey rink. Low ceiling and very small. It was general admission on the floor and everyone around me was very enthused and dancing. I was lucky enough to have tickets for the Obama speech in Grant Park and was looking forward to this show to top the week off and Dylan definitely delivered. I thought his voice and keyboard was pretty high in the mix and sounded great for the most part. The rest of the band also played very well. He only played his guitar toward the end of HWY 61 and it sounded great.
  20. Also check out Parker on Vandermark Powerhouse Sound CD (atavistic.com). His stuff with The Chicago Underground Trio/Quartet and Isotope 217 is also rather good. Lastly he's on a number of Fred Anderson disks (Live at the Velvet Lounge - Vol. Two and he is on a few tracks on the From the River to the Ocean.) Regarding the Exploding Star Orchestra, there is a live show (11.1.08 from Germany), where Roscoe Mitchell sits in with the band up on the Dime a Dozen website. Definitely worth the download.
  21. Vandermark does help curate the festival. But since you brought this up, I don't remember him ever playing during the festival. So I looked at the past schedules and indeed he in not any of the schedules. Perhaps he wants to use the funds available on other players, which is a good thing.
  22. Vandermark is on tour in Europe this month and most of next month.
  23. I am planning to go to many of the shows. I won't be able to catch Saturday's show because I'm heading up to Kalamazoo to see a Dylan show. But the festival will be a great way to unwind from the election. All the nights look great, but I'm most looking forward to the Alexander von Schlippenbach /Paul Lovens duo on Wed. Tonight' show at Elastic (2830 N Milwaukee Ave) should be a great way to start the week. Elastic website states the show starts at 10pm, but in an email from Dave Rempis it showed a 9pm start. Z
  24. No, not really. People from Chicago, like myself, might just a little. The post was meant to more of a joke.
  25. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/...ail-with-palin/ Oh no! See this is what happens when one votes early. I should have waited to see who the Da Coach stumps for. Oh well, at least Lovie's a supporter. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/be...earnt31.article Obviously I'm not surprised by Ditka's stance. But Ditka sure seems to have his hand on the pulse of the job situation in this country. "Departing somewhat from John McCain's argument that failures on Wall Street and in Washington have imperiled the American worker, Ditka argued that anyone seeking employment can f
